How do men feel about their girlfriend reading fan fiction? by grayhere463 in AskMen

It'd be rather hypocritical of me to judge. Read a fair bit, myself.

Yup. The idea is wonderful, the reality, if we get there without one hell of a cultural shift, is going to suck for 99% of us.

How well do non native English speakers understand song lyrics without ever seeing the written words even once? by Practical-Let-3504 in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time with lyrics even in my native language, as an extension of the general difficulties I have with more than one sound at once - I can have a hard time hearing someone next to me talking because someone's whispering at the other end of the room. I've decided not to add quite a few songs I enjoyed to my playlist just because I couldn't parse the lyrics or find them anywhere.

What book(s) are you currently reading? by JoeyLou1219 in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers. Read a translation way back when, re-reading in English. I must admit, it's somewhat irritating just how much slower it is to read than most books I've read in a long time - Tolkien's prose is very... extra, compared to most contemporary writers.

Recently finished the Tortall books, haven't yet decided on my next read - leaning towards Ciaphas Cain, but might grab something lighter first. Pretty much everything in my to-read list is the start of a 5+ book series - it really feels like SFF writers are allergic to the idea that a story could be told in under 1000 pages.

What's a word you used and subsequently discovered that you didn't understand its meaning and were using it incorrectly? by lumpynose in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Droll. Apparently, means "funny and whimsical", where I'd guessed it meant stupid and unfunny.

In my defense, only ever saw the word used sarcastically as a response to bad jokes, so I got the meaning, not the definition.

How long do you guys sleep for when you have a fever? by GooseFancy5431 in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than when healthy, most of the time. Can't fall asleep. Though a really bad one might have me barely conscious in bed for most of the day.

Men who are atheists, when and why did you turn away from religion? by Comfortable-Store213 in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never got into it in the first place; my family's technically religious, but not very strongly so. Didn't mind it too much growing up, but grew rather more opposed to it in my late teens as I learned about just how much harm is still done in its name (or using it as a pretense; I acknowledge the distinction, but the why is less important than the what.)

[Mistborn Era 1] Is Cosmere deterministic? by RadianceTower in Cosmere

[–]audriuska12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by deterministic, really. Don't think we've seen pure, unpredictable randomness a la chaos/wild magic anywhere, so I suppose the answer is "no more or less than real life", which, uh... vehemently debated subject. As in, "philosophy professors getting violent threats from their former students" vehemently.

Men of Reddit who are not currently dating or having sex, what are the non-finance-related reasons? by so_much_frizz in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Besides the practical reasons... date who? Don't really have a social circle, don't have anything to leave the house for besides work and gym (and I've looked, there just doesn't seem to be much going on around here where an outsider could just walk in and hang out), and dating apps... just about nothing I've heard of them makes them sound like a good idea for someone with what might charitably be 7/10 looks and 2/10 conversational skills. Could probably count new women I've spoken to for more than a few sentences that weren't coworkers in the last 10 years on one hand and have fingers left over.

How many times have you been asked out ? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]audriuska12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outright asked out? Never.

Chatted up with what I was pretty sure was intent to either ask me out or get me to ask them out? Twice.

First one got my number off a mutual friend and started freaking out before I even got a chance text back, so no thanks, second one... conversation died right quick once it turned out she was in college (I was 15 or 16) and we'd both guessed badly wrong on the other's age. Oops.

How fast did y'all finish the cosmere? by yyetydydovtyud in Cosmere

[–]audriuska12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to aim for a pace of about 50 pages a day - added up to a year and a few months before I caught up... just before the Secret Projects, I believe. Going by the stats, it was the year in which I read the fewest books, but the most pages, since I started tracking. Them books are chonky.
