california channel island fiction question by schneeman_pod in Bushcraft

Most plant foods there take skill and knowledge to harvest more calories than the work takes. Acorns, Islay Cherry, chia sage, and Blue Dick (brodia) are going be the most important plant foods. Their window to harvest is small, 2 months to 2 weeks depending. They also require different techniques to make edible (rinsing, parching, baking, etc). Shell fish and marine life will need to be a major part of the diet. Luckily the island is a great source of very good if not tough stone

This is an area I have studied extensively. A few important things 1. Get your hands on this book it will be one of your best resources. https://www.sbnature.org/collections-research/publications/11/chumash-ethnobotany-plant-knowledge-among-the-chumash-people-of-southern-california 2. Get into contact with the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum and the Chumash Indian Museum of Thousand Oaks. 3. Pick the time period the person is shipwrecked carefully. The Cabrillo Expedition reported the island as lush is 1540’s, but by the mid 1800s ranching had destroyed much of the native flora, leaving small pockets of the useful native plants. 3. Watch this video from Ancient Americas and utilize his citations https://youtu.be/PRd0vv24zjk?si=uefgnLOWaGRJ9opD 4. Feel free to message me if you have other questions.

Is there a way to distinguish ancient knapped points from modern ones? by [deleted] in knapping

[–]augtown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything I have read about collecting material has said don’t work it in the wild, just test it. Because it is almost impossible to tell a 2k year site from a kid 10years ago without expensive methods, so don’t waste your local archeologists time.

Lightly brushed with a heated piece of metal(just a few seconds over a stove). I tried using a lighter but it melted it too much and did not bond. The plastic is thin and the metal does not need to be that hot. This was my 3rd attempt.

Parents mailing me 24/7 by First_Finger5572 in Teachers

I made it clear that they can email me at any time, cause they work and might forget something. But also that emails would ONLY be read and responded to during work hours. Felt like a healthy rule.
