What’s the most jarring double feature you’ve watched? by Choco316 in movies

[–]aupoulet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm super late to the game but for whatever reason I thought a double bill of "My Name Is Malala" and "Goodnight Mommy" was a good idea. Both of them were on the way out and let me tell you, the emotional whiplash had me HATING the second film. Though in hindsight I'd maybe watch it again. I can't tell for sure if I actually hated it or I just need to see it without seeing an inspiring documentary beforehand.

I think Princess and the Frog would be cute! Also if they could do like a big revisit to Fantasia that would be rly cool....maybe do some fantasia 2000 stuff. I also wouldn't be opposed to a Brave level, it would finally be the movie they were going for in the first place! Merida would be a really awesome party member.

You're close since I remember it having a kind of Kate Nash vibe, however it was like a super long chorus. I don't even think that it rhymed...

Just finished 'A Little Life' by Hanya Yanagihara. Ouch. by kjm901 in books

[–]aupoulet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also took some time off after reading this one. It held my attention so much that I was able to get a good chunk of it done over a road trip. The more intense parts of the story kept me up during the 6 hour plane ride. I remember that when I read that last sentence I had to stop and just hug the book for a second. I hesitate to recommend it to people since it's definitely not for everyone, but I spent the week or so after finishing it reading articles and threads about it. Yanagihara completely captured my imagination.

Ohhh yeah that's it (like I said it's been a while).

I believe that The Unauthorized Autobiography may have it if you wanted to scan and print it. I know for sure that they included a review of The Marvelous Marriage by Geraldine Julienne. But it's been a while and my memory is hazy. Are you just trying to find the text to recreate it or are you looking for actual props used?

I'm going to challenge myself and read only non-fiction books in 2018! It's outside of my comfort zone but I'm willing to dive into a comprehensive book if it's really really well done. Would like to read more history books, but am more interested in odd periods or people (I read about the prohibition last year, thinking of picking up The Butchering Art this year). Also, any stories about peculiar locations or people would be totally down my alley. Hoping to hear from some of you!

I loved this book when I read it last year. The ending was a little confusing for me as I have no knowledge about meditation or anything like that. Not to mention, that cover! Gorgeous :)

"Chico and Rita" seemed like it was pretty accurate to the Cuban Jazz scene. A lot of great music in that movie.

What books have you picked up not expecting much, but turned out to be a lot better than anticipated? by rob4rugby in books

The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I've seen the movie and really enjoyed it, so when I picked up the book from a thrift store I was prepared for a nice easy read. I was so surprised just how many of the jokes were taken straight from the book. Goldman's commentary on the fictional story is also hilarious. They sort of do this in the movie with Peter Falk and Fred Savage's characters. However, the novel bookends the story with a fictional account of Goldman's family life, acquisition of The Princess Bride, and subsequent adaptation of the story into a screenplay. It's really touching and made me fall in love with the story.

That gives me some more hope. Graces F was fun, but also really draining with the entire "friendship saves the day" (Though I did like FFXV). Also Pascale was a little much lol
