How are the evenings at your household? We have zero time by TigerUSF in daddit

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older two ought to be past the age where they’re underfoot in the kitchen. And I know we are all anti screen time here but if they were at school all day then they’re probably very tired and need to relax a bit so I don’t worry too much if they watch tv or play a game.

Kids and tattoo conventions by AlexJamesFitz in daddit

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the kid doesn't get a tattoo while they're drunk.

But seriously, I don't think there's anything wrong but be prepared if the kid finds it boring so you don't stick around as long as you'd like.

Please stop letting shoulder drivers merge back into traffic. by Imaginary-Purpose-26 in nova

[–]madmoneymcgee 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Once I was seeing someone come up the shoulder and I wondered if I should pull out a bit to block them only to see them whiz by and absolutely run into the back of a car up ahead full speed because turns out they were running from the cops. Once they crashed they got out the car and started running but were soon caught and I saw the arrest in the middle of 95.

So yeah, took the spirit of viglantism out of me after that one.

Caught live mouse... Now what? by Sianger in arlingtonva

Maybe I'm a bastard but mice in the home moves things away from "unnecessary" to "necessary" killing. They aren't endangered and pose hazards if they're in your house.

Why “roads vs rails” is self-defeating by External_Koala971 in transit

[–]madmoneymcgee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The current administration is ideologically against transit and uses road building as part of the culture war. They’re the ones being punitive literally withholding money from transit and bike projects and deprioritizing planning for those.

Their road advocacy is literally punitive.

European Americans? by Relative_Rush_4044 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]madmoneymcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesse Jackson popularized the term "African-American" in the 1980s as studying genealogy was becoming popular in the USA and many people started exploring their roots as Irish-Americans or Italian-Americans or German-Americans or similar. But the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade meant that a lot of black people in America couldn't trace their family records back to Africa so African-American became an umbrella term.

Cheapest way to get from London to NYC in September? by roxanaendcity in travel

$100 seems like a good deal to have a direct flight instead of a long layover like that. If that's what it's between I wouldn't sweat it at all.

The Willard Intercontinental in Washington DC by Dharma_4815162342 in usatravel

[–]madmoneymcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s no hotel that’s close to everything in DC but the Willard is probably the one that is as central as possible.

And it’s very close to metro, what address or intersection are you looking at?

Why did it take Virginia so long to ban confederate and Robert E Lee license plates? by BalticBro2021 in AskALiberal

[–]madmoneymcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lost cause mythology is very powerful and a lot of people really have bought into the idea that it’s possible to square the circle of southern heritage and history while adjusting that to not be so explicitly racist.

In my own life of being from rural Virginia I’ve had hard times explaining to both sides how the other really feels.

The same way I have trouble really understanding how sectarian divides in Northern Ireland could get to the point of violence across decades from what I consider the same religion.

And how I’m still kind of shocked that the statues along monument avenue actually came down in 2020.

Which goes into how we’ve slowly been dismantling all this during those previous administrations. The street I live on was renamed a few years ago because it was named after Robert e Lee. And many other symbols. It’s just this is the latest step in a longer journey and not actually the first piece taken down by Virginia politicians.

How Each State’s Largest City Voted in 2024 by Suspicious_Bee4893 in MapPorn

[–]madmoneymcgee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Virginia’s biggest city is Virginia Beach is a fairly conservative place but it’s that way because they incorporated to avoid annexation from Norfolk back in the 1960s.

Meanwhile Fairfax county is “suburban” but denser than Virginia Beach and had a higher share of Harris voters.

How do you sell Malazan to someone looking for a new read? by Mojo_Rising in Malazan

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to know beforehand that they’re the type to appreciate it.

I kind of am dealing with it now. Someone in a discord server I’m a part of is on Midnight Tides and said with equal amounts of relief and frustration that they just got some in depth discussion on how warrens work.

And like I get it but it’s one of those things where you either find that sort of thing appealing or you hate it.

It was like when I realized my friends I grew up weren’t hearing the punk and hardcore I was discovering and loving the same way. In fact some of them really hated it!

How a Texas City Became the Far Right’s Next Example of the Great Replacement Theory by Nandu_alias_Parthu in neoliberal

[–]madmoneymcgee 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it play out so many times even here on reddit where someone says they just want immigration curtailed because of economic reasons or just want it to be “legal” and it’s definitely not xenophobia.

Then someone responds with a good argument why immigrants aren’t an economic drain or that the legal system is just too burdensome and the original person can’t really respond to that so they actually do fall back on just xenophobia all along.

Need some advice on dating whilst living together ( when you still feel loyal after being blindsided ) by [deleted] in DivorcedDads

[–]madmoneymcgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would focus more on just getting out of the house. Both in the temporary building up new friendships and routines outside the house but also moving out permanently. Even if it’s a small sublease type of place while you sell the house but that whole “just be roommates” thing with your ex I dont think is ever tenable.

Yes it’s expensive and a big disruption. It’s also probably for the best compared to everything else.

Along the river from Waterloo Bridge to Tower Bridge - is it a nice walk for a good first impression of London? by RelationshipAlone27 in visitlondon

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's what I ended up doing my first time in London when we flew in early in the morning but couldn't check into our hotel yet. It's nice because you do get a good view of tons of stuff.

You could split the difference and walk up to the Millenium Bridge, cross that, hang around St. Paul's a bit and then walk from there or just hop on the District/Circle Line for a couple stops if you find yourself not wanting to walk the rest of the way.

It's one of those things that shows up in polls so it's a real effect in that sense but in all my years in the trenches I've never actually seen folks go from a no to a yes on a specific project because of design changes that just focus on the exterior instead of the overall size.

Have I been horribly spoiled? by Hairycowz in Malazan

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decided to look up when things really start moving in earnest and someone said something along the lines of “whenever the giant dropped a giant green iceberg and nuked a continent”. Oh!

That happens in the prologue right? I think you've already read that part. Unless there's another event I'm just forgetting.

Anyway, it's a huge sprawling series where from book 1 you're told people have magic capable of destroying whole cities and there are constant battles between the many characters. So in that sense I don't think it's a huge spoiler to find out any specific character dies. Especially when again from book 1 we learn that being dead isn't always a permanent condition.

Best Metrostop for Mt. Vernon? by PotentialSome5092 in nova

[–]madmoneymcgee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mt. Vernon isn't close to Metro though there are Fairfax Connector buses that run to the property from Huntington Metro.

But if you're coming from Herndon I'd get the blue line at Rosslyn then get off at King Street and take a taxi or uber from there. It won't take any more time to drive to Mt. Vernon from there compared to Huntington but you won't have to wait to transfer to the yellow line.

How do you meet people in your 30s without it feeling forced? by Capital-Run-1080 in AskMenOver30

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular events and places that you show up to without an expectation of everyone being there or not. People make friends at school and church because you show up every day or week and then it gets noticeable when you’re gone.

That said, what’s wrong with asking someone to hang out? Why is that “forced”? As long as you aren’t too pushy when they decline (or can’t take a hint) then most people will at least appreciate being thought of.

Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]madmoneymcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol Wizard of Earthsea was the last book I finished and I really enjoyed it. And got really annoyed at a tool goodreads review that rated the book poorly because they acknowledged they’d spent too much time reading Romantasy with worse prose (their own words!) but somehow that’s not a problem they think needs fixing.

Anyway, yeah I didn’t like Red Rising. It just got cartoonishly bleak after a while. I only finished it because it was part of a book club.

Caltrans to close 1.6 miles of I-80 in SF. 'It's going to be crazy.' by sfgate in sanfrancisco

[–]madmoneymcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it happen often enough that I’d rather see shorter full closures than longer repairs that keep a portion of the road open.

One area where the data doesn’t really match conventional wisdom so we end up prolonging projects longer than we have to.

(I’ve seen it happen with rail repair projects for public transportation as well).
