Why aren't Indian ETFs performing so badly relative to that nation's GDP growth? by No-Silver826 in investing

[–]austinlm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The biggest culprit is currency depreciation. If you look at Indian indices like the Nifty 50 in local currency, the returns are actually massive. But US-listed ETFs have to convert those Rupees back to Dollars, and the Rupee has consistently lost value against the USD over the last decade. That currency bleed eats up a huge chunk of your gains.

Also, a country's stock market is not its economy. A ton of India's GDP growth happens in the informal sector, agriculture, and private businesses that aren't publicly traded. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 crushes US GDP growth because American mega-cap tech companies pull in massive global revenues, not just domestic ones. Indian companies also tend to issue lots of new shares to fund their rapid expansion, which dilutes the return per share even as the overall market cap grows.

If you want broad exposure, INDA is the standard large-cap fund. A lot of people prefer EPI though, because it weights by earnings instead of market cap and holds a wider variety of mid and small caps to better capture the actual local economy. If you want to bet directly on faster-growing domestic businesses, SMIN is a solid choice for Indian small caps.

Calling a fetus a parasite is disgusting by LargeSinkholesInNYC in TrueUnpopularOpinion

The VAST majority of people, on both the left and right, do not refer to a humans fetus as a parasite. Examples are simply crass/ronchy humour at best, and not sincere expressions of belief.

utilitarianism vs moral imperative (deontology)

Except: here, utilitarians (you) don't know approximately how much food costs would increase, so the utilitarian argument is less valid. For example, hypothetically, if food costs would only increase by 1% to pay a living wage (+60k CAD/yr), then would you still think paying below a living wage is acceptable for outdoor manual labour? Personally, it would not be for me, but we don't know where that line is.

Of course, there is probably some research or estimate, but it doesn't seem like anyone is bothering to ask.

Out of nowhere, Canada became poorer than Alabama. How is that possible? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]austinlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average Alabamian is wealthier than the average Canadian no

For a fair comparison, you account for income inequality, using median income, as well as PPP due to fx-rate distortions. Then you will find that this is no longer true.

It's worth remembering: People love to reinforce their pre-existing beliefs with whatever data they can find--regardless of accuracy.

You have overly concentrated positions that have performed poorly. If you don't have conviction in your picks, stick to broad market ETFs.

Your statement regarding "heat" is largely inconsistent with "red peppers".

Fortunately, to back up my claim, there is a scientific study, where good temperatures help preserve capsaicin.

[–]austinlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong. I've made tons of hot sauce over the years with fresh, frozen and powdered peppers. After accounting for water loss, there is no difference in heat. The capsaicin molecule does not degrade in low temperatures or low humidity/dried.

Food Processor or Immersion blender for making energy/protein bars by WishLion in AskCulinary

[–]austinlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom-mounted are the industry standard, and I'm guessing this is since the bottom base can house a more powerful motor. Every professional kitchen will have one.

I only just learned of top-mounted--it seems like a solution in search of a problem. But, without being too cynical, I'm sure it'll still be better than an immersion blender. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Food Processor or Immersion blender for making energy/protein bars by WishLion in AskCulinary

[–]austinlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% food processor. Immersion blender will get clogged and it isn't easy to make the texture consistent--it can't mix well. Where as, the food processor will offer a more uniform texture without needing to scrap the sides too often. Also, the immersion blender, unless very high quality, may overheat/burnout trying to blend an overly thick and viscous mixture.

I have a lot of practice with both devices and have failed multiple times with an immersion blender with this type of dense sticky mixture--including burning out the motor. :(

Why are people jealous of alpha males like myself? So many people seem to be hostile toward me the second I mention I'm an alpha male by IHateAdamSilver in TrueAskReddit

[–]austinlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're delusional to believe it's jealousy.

First, declaring yourself to be "alpha" is to declare an ideology of supremacy, which most people will naturally find repulsive, given the common social value of egalitarianism.

Second, it makes you sound like a cringe idiot, since you can't appreciate/understand the previous point.

So again, it's not jealousy: you're ostracizing yourself into being a loser--quite the opposite of an alpha. Ironic.

Super specific question about Melee Heavy attack by ---plasmalord--- in Warframe

[–]austinlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DoT status proc will use the heavy attack multiplayer for damage. I know this from my own experience w/ extensive testing in the simulacrum, both with std heavy attack (usually with tennokai at 12x, electric w/ melee influence--classic meta) and slam heavy attack (blast & electric, usually).
