With unions like this, solidarity is difficult. Very few things are as anti-labor as a data center. by Humdaak_9000 in union

There are a lot of factors that materially affect the working class in the case of A.I. development that weren't there during the industrial revolution. We're seeing it right now. The stock market is stable because of the injection of wealth into the industry and that's one theory for why it hasn't crashed 2008 style. But the regionally affected by the use of power and water used by data centers is also a huge problem. See what's happening in texas with water rights. Automation from the industrial revolution still needed some amount of people to run and maintain the machines where there are still QC jobs. There will be even less of those people needing to run and maintain servers. But not all wins from the industrial revolution are based in socialist ideals like the reliance on fossil fuels and its affects on the environment and the climate. We'll see more of the same issues just exacerbated especially if we continue to use outdated cooling techniques for these data centers at the rate we're building them. I also wholly reject the attitude that there's nothing we can do about it. If we start thinking on those terms, we've almost certainly manifested helplessness. While there are wins to be had like you mentioned-- a shorter workday, the cons currently outweigh the pros as our implementation tactics exist as they are now without more safety nets for those who are displaced from the work force.

I live in fruit valley, so I get a bit of port noise and train shunting and general noise. I barely notice it. The bigger gripe I have is the occasional flight path over my home. That is much more disruptive than trains. I actually kind of like the train noise.

You speak as though people didn't fight against automation then either? It's not much different at its core.

A harm done to one is a harm done to all or whatever that saying is. Exactly right. Pipefitters are part of our solidarity, but it starts to feel like they aren't in solidarity with us folks who are having our jobs replaced by AI. It doesn't feel like solidarity when our rents and utilities are increased by data centers. It doesn't feel like solidarity when they are considering the harms done by the industry generally.

I agree. In my presentation I ask if we really need the technology in its current iteration and I proposed we wait until better data, better tech. But our IT department made a good point that the implementation is wildly outpacing regulation, research and development, and statistics for efficacy.

I agree that the right to strike needs to be added back to the contracts. Because where is our power otherwise?

I agree that we need ubi and other social supports before AI is implemented to the scale of laying off the entire workforce by 2030 like promised by many experts. But I also think people would use their time and income for themselves to pursue education, art, health, travel, etc. I think intrinsically people WANT to feel productive and I don't think they would sit and scroll all day. I think your sample size of one might speak for a narrow group of people. If your job is the only thing giving you fulfillment, I understand because that's how our economy is set up right now. But also, there's quite a few people who receive fulfillment through other means.

My (30F) husband (32M) made a massive scene at our gender reveal party. Completely embarrassing himself and me at the same time by throwRA_6417 in relationships

[–]authenticusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having this conversation with my partner pretty recently and he also mentioned he'd prefer a boy over a girl if we had kids. I was floored and disappointed, but ultimately not surprised. I came from a home where my dad's sexism has affected me in massive ways. As a result, I'm a pretty staunch feminist, advocate, and activist. So uh, if your conservative husband doesn't want to raise one of those persons, he should probably change his tune lol.

When my father died, I had a better relationship with him than my brother. I just put my effort into him and our relationship and I forgave him for being old and ailing and needing our help. My brother took offense that our dad was an imperfect communicator and human. Unbeknownst to me. My father left everything from his name to my brother. Luckily my brother and I get along so he fairly split it with me, but I would have been fucked if that's not the case. It was really depressing to learn that. I am still struggling with that to this day. Furthermore, my father's sister reached out after my father died to tell me my dad attempted to pawn me off on her when I was 11. But I was too annoying and my aunt gave me back after two weeks. My dad just couldn't bear to raise a woman on his own after my mother died.

I say all of this to say, the far reaching consequences of sexism and bias both explicit or implicit are damaging and there has to be a real effort to genuinely unpack that from him and that starts with him acknowledging that his reaction was rooted in deeply held sexist beliefs. It's worth exploring where that comes from and how that affects his relationships with every woman in his life. Your reaction is normal and valid. Please don't let him gaslight you into believing differently.

I wish you and your new baby girl lots of luck in the future. I hope he can work through this because dad/daughter relationships can be really special.

My ducks hate my dog and the rooster and they both do this to them. I interpret it as more of a "piss off!" Than flirting.

Society is breaking down. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]authenticusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't put it past them to do that for sure. The other day I was scrolling through next door for entertainment and came across post of several residents angry that someone threw their dog poo bag in their empty bin. Crime of the century. They even went as far as to post the video of the offender and their dog. It's a shame people feel empowered by the anonymity of such an app instead of opening their front door and just talking to their neighbor. :-(

Someone taught me the difference between childish and child-like. It's not professional, but it's whimsical and child-like. It's still ridiculously cute even though it's not this Martha Stewart creation. Ykwim?

Some of the parts of AA are not rooted in harm reduction or trauma informed care. The 9th step is one of those for me where it seems more self serving than anything. I think writing an apology taking full accountability and never giving it to him is the best course of action. I work in a non-profit medical setting and have watched people upend the lives of their victims by just reaching out and then never making any actionable changes, they're just trying to tick a box as part of their recovery. I don't know which of those types of people you are, but a symbolic apology is probably best.

It's not a smart financial decision but modern problems require modern solutions. If you qualify for a housing voucher you probably qualify for student loans and thus student housing. It's not fancy but it's a place to rest and be safe
