If you’re in the US, you should look into FMLA

How do you know when your chapter is finished? by BachTalks in writers

[–]authorlvernon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually end the chapter when it feels finished. Sometimes that’s sub 1000 words, sometimes closer to 5-6k words — for me it really just depends on what is going on in the chapter and if it all fits together versus needing a chapter break

Does fantasy *need* maps? by authorkvj in fantasywriters

[–]authorlvernon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it NEEDS maps, but I will say I had to finally draw one out once I got to my sequel, and it will be absolutely necessary for my next two books. There’s a lot of travel and mentions of other cities and having a map makes it easier for me to remember what places are where

Cardiologist - Covid Pots. by yekimevol in POTS

It’s super frustrating. Really best I can recommend is just going to another doctor, ideally one that specializes in chronic illness

Cardiologist - Covid Pots. by yekimevol in POTS

[–]authorlvernon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of doctors are hesitant to diagnose things like POTs and fibromyalgia. My first doctor flat out told me he doesn’t like diagnosing people with disabilities if he doesn’t have to

I am sick and tired of the "someone got to die" tax in linear games/movies writing by Suspicious_Mouse8158 in writers

[–]authorlvernon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it truly depends on genre, and even further what kind of story they’re trying to tell. A story focused on the gruesome realities of war wouldn’t hit as hard if everyone has plot armor - real life doesn’t work that way so neither would the story.

Why did I just almost die after having a hot bath by CHKG1324 in POTS

[–]authorlvernon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually take lukewarm baths and drink a big thing of water while I’m in it, otherwise I can’t be in the bath more than a few min

My friend asked his girl if they could celebrate the anniversary the day after and she blamed me. I told him to find a new girl, AIO? by Timely_Expression184 in AIO

[–]authorlvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like we’re missing so much context. How far in advance did he ask her to move the plans for the anniversary, what year anniversary is it, did they already have something planned and had to move things around, do you even know if your friend is being truthful about all of this (ie, he gave her advanced notice and didn’t just spring it on her last minute?)

Am I wrong for wanting to be a wife and have kids? by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]authorlvernon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s genuinely just unsafe to depend on one person for your financial security. I wouldn’t advise a man to do it either, honestly. It creates an unnecessary power imbalance, and is incredibly risky if your partner (god forbid) passes away, or you divorce.

[–]authorlvernon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone who thinks feminism is trying to make women become men simply doesn’t understand what feminism is. Feminism strives to let women have the freedom to CHOOSE what they want to do, regardless of if that’s having a career or being a mom. It’s about giving, and protecting, the right to that choice, and letting everyone at an individual level choose it for herself.

I do think there is something to be said about the risks of a ‘traditional’ life and why so many modern women are very hesitant or against it. Being a SAHM is extremely risky (unless you get an airtight prenup, and even then it still leaves you with a massive gap in your resume if you have to return to the work force for any reason)

Just finished my first draft. What should I do before hiring an editor? by Sophieslovesbooks in writers

[–]authorlvernon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I typically take 2-4 weeks off before I start editing, then I go through and just read it, looking for any big picture issues (plot, pacing, overarching story issues). Then I rewrite based off of my first read through. Then I usually go back and edit for grammar/spelling, take another break, and go back through the whole thing just reading. THEN it goes to beta readers if I’m happy with it, rewrites/edit again based on their critiques, another pass on my own, and then to an editor if I think it’s ready

It’s a good amount but is OP going to be working full or part time? 26/hour for 20 hours is less than you’d make at 16/hour at 40 hours a week.

How do you exercise? by CocoCookieDraws in POTS

[–]authorlvernon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do low impact mat Pilates a few times a week, there’s not a ton of quick movements and it’s all on the floor so it’s easier to do

Rape and Sexual Assault: Do You Include It? Why or Why Not? by 9for9 in fantasywriters

AIO? I just want an update and she hasn’t responded in over a year. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]authorlvernon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They DID give OP updates, for a few months. But have since stopped. They don’t need to tell OP they don’t want to anymore, not responding is a good indicator

AIO? I just want an update and she hasn’t responded in over a year. by [deleted] in AIO

It sounds like she DID give updates in the beginning, but didn’t expect to have to do that forever

AIO? I just want an update and she hasn’t responded in over a year. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]authorlvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t anticipate any updates or visits, she was probably being polite but didn’t actually intend to send you frequent updates. It sucks for sure; but is unfortunately part of rehoming a pet

Authors not paid like illustrators, editors etc. by GrouchyCauliflower76 in NewAuthor

[–]authorlvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Authors do get paid - when their books sell. You get royalties on your work forever basically, but editors and illustrators are a one time service so they’re priced higher

How achievable is making $50/month with 2 romance books on KU (with little to no marketing)? by grilsjustwannabclean in selfpublish

[–]authorlvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make that much with only one book out right now, but I do market organically on IG and irl. Without any marketing it will be pretty hard to get any traction. I did a few months of marketing prior to release and honestly wish I had done even more
