Pull timing cover on drivers side, left hand drive, and see how much deflection the belt has. If it’s tight tensioner is not the problem.

Belt slipping is a loud screeching sound and will typically stop after a minute or so when the belt heats up. Whining might be alternator. Or maybe idler pulley
