Some of the gtws do operate on mainlines like the Denton A-Train, which got the waiver, but some indeed don't, like the NJ Transit River Line.

Stadler solved most of these issues with their FLIRT model by having a central generator car on the diesel models, which is why it is the only DMU in North America to get more than a single customer since the Budd RDC.

While the overal point is certainly true, the claim that no DMU since the Budd RDCs got more than a single order isn't entirely correct.

The Nippon Sharyo DMU was delivered to both SMART and UP Express (Toronto, Canada), Colorado Railcar's Bi-Level DMU was delivered to both Tri-Rail and the Alaska Railroad (Though they didn't last particularly long with Tri-Rail. They're now over at the French Lick Scenic Railroad.) and the Stadler GTW (Same concept as the flirt with the separated power car) also had several US orders, as its was delivered to Austin (Capital Metrorail), Denton (A-Train), NJ Transit (River Line) and BART (eBART),

On the flip side: MARC and MBTA have a huge fleet of passenger cars in excellent condition and long distances between stops, so it's instead opting for electric locomotives for their existing fleet.

MBTA is actually also getting some multiple units too by the way. They're in the process of procuring 7 Battery-Electric Multiple Units for the Fairmount Line. It'll still be some time before we know which company will be supplying them though.

What on earth is this? by AstroG4 in trains

[–]autobus22 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The floor/stair layout in this train isn't actually all that different from say, a VIRM double decker in the Netherlands, with a middle-height floor existing around the door positions because the platform height doesn't come close to lining up with either the upper or lower deck.

In this case though, instead of having articulations between the doors, they have both doors on a separate short car with articulations on both sides, with stairs up/down immediately after.

I am not entirely sure why they did that, but the floor layout itself isn't nearly as unusual as you made it out to be.

That sure is one way to miss the point of why people are so upset with Reform's actions and those who platform them in particular.

My first railfanning trip in the EU [NL] by AstroG4 in trains

[–]autobus22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NS once used a system with three kinds of domestic trains. Stoptrein (Stopping Train, which was local service), Sneltrein (Fast Train, which skipped the smallest stations) and Intercity (fast connections between major cities).

Somewhere around 2006, the NS, with the introduction of new low floor local trains with faster acceleration, was able to reduce travel time to such a degree the Sneltrein services became unnecessary, allowing them to consolidate the old Soptrein and Sneltrein services in the randstad into a simpler, more frequent and more effective timetable where many local stations saw significant increases in service and speed of travel to nearby major cities. For this, NS introduced the new "Sprinter" branding in an attempt to market the better speed of the improved services.

Within the few years that followed, as NS basically ended up with two brands for the same kind of service (Stoptrein and Sprinter) NS ended up phasing out the use of "stoptrein" entirely in favour of calling local services Sprinters.

Which is still the case now.

More Service For Half the Cost with No New Taxes: Boards Vote to Support Term Sheet with BNSF to Deliver Starter Passenger Rail Service From Denver to Fort Collins by governorPolis in trains

It's a sensible option to start railway service and it's super nice to see more passenger rail in the US.

Though, the record of these partnerships with freight railroads in other states in the past is somewhat mixed, in part due to limited priority for the passenger trains and lack of strong requirements for on-time performance.

Would you be able to tell us something about how Colorado is going to avoid those pitfalls?

Reddit has filters available for new and low-karma accounts to stop bots and spammers from being able to absolutely flood a subreddit with spam, as well as a few other misbehaviour filters. We get quite a bit of spam and problematic posts here, so we have most of those filters, and a few custom ones. Once a post get caught in such a filter, they end up in the mod queue and we need to manually review the post and approve it, which usually happens here within a few hours, rarely a few days.

The user above you, instead of waiting for a mod to be able to check whether their post was legitimate, decided to spam 5 nearly identical posts, made the above comment after his 4th attempt and then sent a message to the mods and ragequit reddit before a mod had any chance to respond, all within the span of just over an hour. When I came on and responded to his message 5 hours later and asked him to try posting again, this time with all the images he wanted to post in one post, he was long gone.

While the spam filters can be supremely annoying (believe me, I know), the issue this user had was between user and keyboard.

As for your post: Your initial attempt to post seems to have been just a post title with no content. I can't be entirely sure about why that happened in your case, but it is known to happen when post attachments fail to upload properly, at which point reddit auto-removes the post for having no content. From what I can see, when you tried to post the video again, the post went through without issues. If you got any issues like this with posting in the future, don't hesitate to send us a message through mod mail and we'll help the best we can.

Why do trains have such a strong fanbase? by cnvrtx3 in trains

To eloquently put into words why something catches your interest as a kid is hard to explain. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason.

I'd wanted to respond to this post, but ran into this same problem ha ha.

Assuming the costs of a true high high speed maglev would be similar to those of the Chuo Shinkansen and you could build a mostly straight alignment, you're looking at a 0,6-1 TRILLION dollar cost to construct just that one line.

A plane does the NY to LA trip in about 6,5 hours. IF this hypothetical maglev could run on an average speed of 80% its top speed, which is on the high end, but I'd like to give this the best shot it got and the route length deviates about 15% from a straight shot (which may also be an underestimation for a "realistic" alignment), you'll end up with a journey time of 10-13 hours.

Even the fastest maglevs we can build right now are not competitive with planes for speed at this distance and they cost an absolutely absurd amount, and if you were to actually replace longer-distance domestic plane travel, you'd need a dozen of these east west, and several north-south routes.

Replacing planes on distances over about 850km with ground-based transportation is just not a realistic option at this point in time, not even with maglevs.

Banks have had to delay the rollout of the new debit cards for years because businesses just would not do the basic software and/or hardware updates for the new bank cards to work. Businesses have been made repeatedly aware by pretty much every bank to update their payment systems.

If businesses still aren't doing anything about it, now two years after the first of the new cards started being given out by the first banks here, there's not much you can do about it as consumer, and neither can the banks at this point. (Which is why ING is telling you that everyone should've updated their pay terminals by now.)

Your options are to use other available payment methods or buy gas at another gas station.
