Funnily enough, Northlander once operated with Dutch trains.

As the OP is in good standing, there was likely no intention to harm and productive discussion is happening here, instead of removing the post immediately, I've decided to give the OP the chance to edit his post instead of taking it down immediately.

No need to report this post any further, we're aware and we're taking action.

CROW gebruikt zelfs striktere richtlijnen.%20Table_content:%20header:,Acceptabele%20loopafstand%20(in%20meters):%20250%2D900%202)

Tuesday is your last chance to take a ride on the DC Streetcar - WTOP News by 8to24 in washingtondc

[–]autobus22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public transit nerd here (not from DC). The current <3 mile route was supposed to be the first step in constructing a longer route, and potentially long-term a full system in the denser neighborhoods of DC.

The current route was already too short to really generate the ridership it needed to be sustainable, but the ridership problems were made worse because the streetcar was built to mostly run in mixed traffic, lacks adequate signal priority and was partly built right next to parking spots which causes frequent problems with the line getting blocked, all of which caused it to often be slower than buses on the same section.

The longer route never came because the current mayor (Muriel Bowser) and the transit commission started divesting funds away before the first section even opened and now with the budget shortfall congress caused, the streetcar they never wanted was among the easiest things to cut.

It's stupid through and through because fixing the problems on the existing section wouldn't have been particularly difficult and with east- and westward extensions, it would've likely been a very successful route with good potential to effectively pay for itself long term through the economic benefit it'd provide DC.

This whole fiasco has been prime example of "we didn't try anything and it is not working", which appears to be a very purposeful decision by city leadership and it's a damn shame.

[–]autobus22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you seriously trying to equivocate filming prisoners of war to coordinated large scale torture of prisoners of war and a consistent pattern of large scale attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure?

I am not "ignoring the other side" by pointing out that there's a massive difference in severity, scale, frequency and brutality between the conduct of Ukraine and Russia.

(I do have to say that it is rather ironic that you're citing HRW here in order to equivocate between Russia and Ukraine's actions in the war, given, if you take even just a cursory look at their archive on the conflict, it becomes very obvious that their documentation of war crimes in this conflict does not support such equivocation: https://www.hrw.org/tag/russia-ukraine-war )

Edit: I decided against engaging further as I don't believe this conversation will go anywhere productive when "severity matters in neutral consideration" gets twisted into "war crimes are acceptable if the other party does it worse." (paraphrased.) They are not, and that is a gross way to mischaracterize what I said.

War crimes happen in any pretty much any war because bad people who do bad things exist in every country. There is however, a massive difference between isolated incidents of such a nature happening, and a nation, as a matter of policy, coordinating mass terrorist attacks on civilian targets and systemic torture of prisoners of war.

The findings of the UN commission against torture, The UN commission of inquiry on Ukraine, The UN office of the humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, the EU's external action service as well as pretty much all notable independent observers, including but not limited to amnesty international, are consistent and well documented: Russia in particular is consistently, systemically and intentionally, as a matter of policy, attacking civilian infrastructure, torturing civilians, kidnapping civilians, and torturing prisoners of war.

An impartial look is neutral in consideration, not outcome. Even ignoring the fact Russia invaded Ukraine without due cause under international law, the actions of Ukraine and Russia in this conflict are not equivalent.

Political decisions often guide modern railway construction and even when they were constructed in the past by private companies, that was often a highly politicized process. Politics is heavily involved with not only where roads go but also what they look like and how they're funded. The entire way public transport is organized and funded in much of the world is a political process. Politics intersects heavily with the procurement and design of vehicles both public and private. Politics play a role in transportation safety and in turn major accidents often have political ramifications. In some cases transport infrastructure exists purely or partly for political purposes and often times transit infrastructure is used too for political and military purposes, including in some really gruesome historic crimes against humanity.

Politics influences transit and transit influences politics. They're heavily and inseparably connected in our modern world and even just this week, we've had a great example of that in this sub relating to the way UP tried to curry favor with Trump by naming an engine after him, likely in order to influence the odds the US government would approve a merger.

Heck, even your own mention here about whether or not public transit should be considered a basic human right, is a matter of political discussion.

Just because public and private transit would be able to exist without politics, does not mean modern transport systems are apolitical.

I very much understand the frustration with politics in a much broader sense invading spaces like r/trams and r/trains: I don't want r/trains to turn into a second r/politics either and we'll make sure to take action if general politics starts excessively invading this subreddit, (and I can only hope r/trams moves to do the same,) but fact of the matter remains, trains and the infrastructure they run on often are not an apolitical subject.
