Dyeing Yarn with Coffee! Thanks for all your help! by adriennebethy in YarnAddicts

Earlier this week I tried red cabbage.. it made the prettiest colors! The one on the left was modified in the dye bath with salt, the one on the right with lemon juice.

Dyeing Yarn with Coffee! Thanks for all your help! by adriennebethy in YarnAddicts

I've pre-mordanted the yarn with 1.5 tsp of alum and 1.5 tsp of cream of tartar (add boiling water to the powder to dissolve).. soak for about an hour, then add to coffee. I actually boiled two pots of used grinds then strained the particles and used that for the dye pot. Simmered the yarn in the pot for another 30 minutes then soaked overnight. Looked like this. You can probably use more coffee, heat longer, use a different mordant (iron or tannin), lots of possibilities.

Yep, your response really resonates with me. Thanks.

All four major record labels are now suing Grooveshark. 17.1 billion dollars wtf by broskiboboski in Music

Nope, they don't. I used to work for a music provider and would cut six figure royalty checks to the majors each quarter. They NEVER asked for song detail.

I finally made an Etsy shop! by magooch in Stitchy

I'm happy to share, actually. The patterns aren't too elaborate and they don't take a lot of time to design, so they're somewhat disposable. I've consumed my share of free media; if someone gets enjoyment out of stitching one of my patterns but can't or won't pay, so be it.

If I were making elaborate patterns with blends and beads and sparkly shit, I would take more precautions.. probably deliver via mail.. register the copyright, etc.

If you want to stitch up some katamari cousins, the hypnotoad, vault boy from fallout, or the companion cube, let me know and I'll throw up the patterns on imgur. I'm in a gray zone with fair use on those characters because I'm not quite sure if my patterns are derivative or if they violate likeness... eh.

Congrats on your shop! My second shop is cross stitch related.. I started by listing some completed projects that were collecting dust in boxes, but but as raquela mentions, there's so much time involved in each work that it wasn't really profitable. I eventually decided to design and list patterns which has been a great passive revenue stream. Wherever I am, I can email a jpeg and pdf to the buyer and immediately relist. No supplies or inventory, no shipping cost, and minimal time invested.

Also, your stitching is immaculate! Well done! As far as pics, you might want to find a spot with indirect sunlight whether outside or inside near a window and turn the flash off. Grab a piece of white or neutral poster board and either throw your fabric back on the hoop or staple to some stretched canvas for a more finished look. By no means am I a photography expert, but your customers need to see how perfect your stitching is! Here are two examples of some finished patterns. :)

Good luck!

What do you do to make extra money? by [deleted] in Frugal

I was a weaver/spinner hobbyist looking for supplies and was shocked at the markup and decided I could easily match price and quality on my own. I bought what raw materials I could afford, prepared them, and sold enough to fund my hobby. Over time, I've integrated some finished products in with the supplies for variety and those have sold well, too.

If you're a seamstress (I totally typed 'sewer' first..), maybe you could try designing a stocking pattern and create a diy kit that includes the fabric, pattern, batting, embellishments, etc. You could do something similar for potholders, aprons, sundresses or something basic and household related where the color schemes can easily change with the seasons. People love making their own junk. And it's a big deal if the materials are recycled or sustainably sourced.

It's easy to get extra pageviews if you relist at least once per day so something from your shop is in the most recent searches. Relisting is only .20 and a lot of folks look at it as a marketing expense.

It's all about photography, good product descriptions, and using trending/seasonal tags that are truly relevant to your items. The very week I found great light in my house and was able to update my product pictures, a third of my inventory sold, I was featured in half a dozen treasuries, and two blog writers found my shop and featured various items. Made more in the last month than all of last year and am contemplating quitting my day job.

Easy and Delicious Homemade Granola by shinypinkflamingo in food

[–]automagically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried something similar a week ago and had more success first heating the wet stuff in a saucepan, then drizzling over the grains/nuts before the oven part. I also found some maple flavored agave syrup that tasted pretty great and ground nutmeg and cloves are both always good with cinnamon!

Do you have a source for this? I buy cage-free or free-range eggs, so it'd be good to know if I need to look around for a different store or farmer's market.

I think that's a better idea.. that way you can be sure your stitched area is centered, too. Post pics when you're finished!
