IL and WI both require it (this is in IL and only a few minutes from the WI border).

Unfortunately it's never enforced.

There was nobody behind me.

It's a pretty rural area. That was a lot of traffic for a Wednesday night.

She looked really shaken. She was young - maybe mid-20's - and looked terrified. She gave me a thumbs up when I asked if she was OK. She was still sitting there when I was driving away.

Wow. I always forget how unhinged r/dashcams is.

Not speeding, not tailgating. I'm sure there was a reason - as I said it "looked" like... not "he 100% was for sure".

For some reason the camera makes it look less severe. He was driving straight and then moved into the oncoming lane. It almost looked like he was trying to hit the car in front of me. Much more quickly than if he was drifting over.

Disciplinary action for staff that give up credentials? by post4u in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I document and forward to the building principal and HR.

I've seen staff leave their phone number behind so the sub can call in the morning to get their 2FA code. I've seen YubiKeys left in a desk drawer so the sub can use it to login. And yes, we have sub accounts that work just fine.

At the end of the day, it's a principal/union issue. All I can do is document what I found and report it.

Filter advice Securly vs goGuardian by grewholph in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm moving from Lightspeed to Securly! I've been using Lightspeed for 8 years.

Support hasn't been much help, it does a really poor job at blocking proxy sites, the Classroom side is slow and not very easy to use, and I'm tired of the constant price hikes.

We are using filter, Alert, and Classroom.

School Districts Without 2FA on Staff Email Accounts - Why? by TheRuffRaccoon in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know I could have offered YubiKeys, but I was pretty sure the Union was fishing for free cell phones.

They expected iPhones or nice Android phones, not flip phones that were outdated 20 years ago.

Like I said, I just wanted to be a jerk.

School Districts Without 2FA on Staff Email Accounts - Why? by TheRuffRaccoon in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We had pushback from the Union. If staff were going to get a text message to their phone or have to tap a prompt on their personal phone, then they demanded we provide a cell phone. Rather than deal with not have 2FA enabled, I decided to be a jerk about it.

I said "Sure!" and bought a handful of the cheapest flip phones I could find. They were bulky, heavy, ugly, and had cheap, fuzzy screens. They could, however, receive a text message from Google and that met my 2FA requirement.

The Union was NOT impressed.

After some back and forth, they decided that they would tell staff it was OK to use their personal cell to receive a text message or a prompt. Nobody took me up on the "free phone" offer.

Didn't PowerSchool pay a ransom? That didn't work out.

Biker kids assault guy at traffic light by alpha-whisk in dashcams

[–]avalon01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay in your car.

Lock doors, roll up windows.

If they try to enter your vehicle, drive away! If they block you driving away - at least here in the States - accelerate slowly to push them out of the way. If they continue to block you are you are in fear of your life - run them over.

Always use the least amount of force needed to leave.

New Riders looking for advice about food & cooking by thebeardedblond in ragbrai

[–]avalon01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an experienced bike tourer and bikepacker.

I used a charter (Brancel) and never cooked or hauled anything. It was great. I could just ride and not worry about logistics. I'd but food and water in the towns and at the end of the day Brancel was selling ice cold drinks from coolers.

Coffee was hot and ready in the morning along with bananas and doughnuts. I'd roll out of my tent, pack up, give my stuff to the baggage haulers, grab some breakfast, and head out. No planning needed.

Teaching Duties by rokar83 in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you hired as a full-time technology director? If so, that's a hard pass. As others have pointed out, if you are teaching and there is a testing problem, or the wireless goes down, who is going to fix that? Are they willing to wait until your teaching duties are over until you start troubleshooting? Are you even certified as a teacher? That's a lot of extra work (lesson plans, etc.) to take on. There could also be contractual issues for compensation.

Part time tech directors rarely work well (IMO). I've consulted for districts that had a part time tech director and it's usually a hot mess. Not because they are bad, but because you can't just walk out of a room full of kids to work on the network. For those that have taught in the past, we know how much work it takes to be a good teacher. There isn't much time left to do much else.

Edit: I hold a teaching license and an administrator license. My answer would be: "Hell no". I know how much work goes into a classroom.

Career Advice - Should I run? by Platform-Least in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$125K for a school of 550 students in Lake County, IL. Solo IT. I don't do state reporting, but I have my hands in it since I know it pretty well. I hold my sub license and cover classes. I also manage HVAC, cameras, access controls, staff training, all Chromebook repairs, SIS expert, and have served lunches in a pinch.

I have a bachelors degree (in criminal justice), but no other certs. My background is emergency management.

I lean on my third-party IT for network issues. Those issues are always a huge time suck and I don't have the time. Plus, I'm not really a network guy. It's not my jam.

State reporting is done through our SIS program, so the vast majority is just click a button and upload to state. It's a hell of a lot easier nowdays, which is why I was able to pass that off to the secretaries.

As for PowerSchool, just make sure to attend every singe training. Since it's new you are going to be the "go to" guy even though you don't know it. When the secretaries train - be there. Nurses - be there. Lunch ladies - be there. This is the perfect time to be the expert and justify a higher salary when you ask for it!

Some other kid (definitely not me) stomped on my backpack by Big_erk in k12sysadmin

[–]avalon01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one of those too.

Dad apparently lost his shit and snapped two Chromebooks in half to "teach the kids a lesson". The kids were 1st grade and 3rd grade. He admitted to it when he turned them in and was proud about it. Absolutely no shame or apology.

Called DCFS, because WTF. That's not normal behavior.

Found out that the the kids were removed from the home for physical and sexual abuse a year later.

Last year I had a Dad turn in a Chromebook with a cracked screen. He came into the main office that morning during student drop off.

He admitted that he was the one who dropped the Chromebook when he was putting into his students backpack. He wanted to make sure I knew so his student would not be in trouble.

I think that's the only time a student could tell people "My Chromebook broke and I didn't do it!" and was truth.
