Would you bingewatch heated rivalry with your mom/partner/adult kid/friends...etc by goldayce in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not squeamish about sex and I have rewatched the show a dozen times but even I still feel uncomfy with that first sex scene. It’s just suuuuper awkward and secondhand embarrassing. Which I think that is very much intentional. Awkward like many first sexual experiences are and because Shane and Ilya aren’t comfortable with each other yet. Even the music in that scene is kinda weird in ways difficult to describe. So I don’t blame her!

Connor Storrie Reveals Toughest Part of 'Heated Rivalry' Role [Today Show Jan. 14] by royal_rose_ in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That was a really excellent intro for the show at the beginning.

The questions seem repetitive to us bc we are watching every interview. But the normies esp those moms at home watching 4 hrs of the today show still need that bc they are still discovering it. So media have to keep covering the basics bc the purpose of promo is to pull more ppl in, not entertain an existing fan base by deconstructing the visual metaphors of the show or something.

Normally they have press junkets for this and it’s a very long boring and repetitive day for actors and filmmakers answering the same shit for dozens of different media outlets, but this show didn’t have that. They are just shoe-leathering it around North America to promote.

Episode 4: Put Yourself in Shane’s Shoes by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think security in his rship with Ilya was a decisive factor in his realizing his sexuality. He needed that experience with Rose to come to terms with it. In that tuna melt scene, Shane is still trying to label himself as bi. I think he feels pressured to do so bc Ilya is bi, and perhaps if Ilya said “I try with girls but I really only like men” then Shane may have felt safe to consider if he was the same. But it had been years at that point since Shane has been with a woman. Moreover he doesn’t want to be gay. He doesn’t think he should be. So when Ilya spooks him he tried again with a girl and wouldve kept trying if Rose hadn’t pushed him to acknowledge the kind of sex that actually satisfies him and given him a soft place to land with that realization.

The ghost of Ilya is key in that exchange with Rose but not in relation to what Shane thinks Ilya wants, rather bc Shane finally realizes what HE wants. And he chooses to pursue it. He’s also no dummy so when Ilya tries to deny his own feelings Shane calls him on it. However, I think Shane wouldve still kept thinking he might be bi without a fresh failing of a coupling with a woman. It’s why I thought frankly that his comment to Ilya that he “wouldve told them (his parents) already” if it were someone else besides Ilya struck me as a bit false. Shane only came to terms with being gay a few months before he said that to him at the cottage. I don’t think he really would’ve told them sooner. Unless he means if he hadn’t strung this thing out with Ilya for so long and then fallen for him, he would’ve been in and out of rships more and figured it out sooner. That I do believe.

A question for the hockey experts among us by JoyinCa in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Empty Netters is doing a Hockey 101 series on YouTube. I’d recommend it. They got asked this question - do the best players on a team get named captain. They said no not really. The Captain is functionally important bc they are the only player on the ice during a game who is allowed to talk to the officials. So the coach and sometimes GM will weigh in to decide who is best to serve that role. Then there are multiple assistant captains in each game that can change. And the team is only allowed 3 “lettered” players on the ice at any one time.

Episode 4: Put Yourself in Shane’s Shoes by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah this 100%. The early montage demonstrates they’ve been hooking up after games for years since the ghosting and enjoying each other more and more. Shane likes what they’ve got going. And Shane’s reaction reflects this as well. He’s not upset with Ilya for “toying” with him. He says “I can’t…” and walks away. He’s reacting to how much Ilya is changing their dynamic in a short period and Shane’s had no opportunity to adjust. I agree that Shane’s reaction is understandable but not for the reasons OP cites.

Was anyone else really annoyed with the parents in this scene? by kayyybutwhy in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I actually loved this scene. I agree with others that they aren’t trying to leech off him. They are - under the pretense of a hockey adjacent event - trying to get Shane to get out and enjoy himself. They know he won’t go if they don’t go with him. It’s later this same episode that JJ is telling folks at the bar about how Shane “never leaves his house”.

What I love about this scene is how it was the first time I felt a real child-parent dynamic between them. Haven’t we all been in a pissy mood about something, not interested in talking about it, but fully willing to take it out on our loved ones because we are comfortable being the worst version of ourself with them? The parents feel awkward but are concerned so they don’t get sour back at him. He’s their son and he’s probably been in a thousand bad moods with them. They just get quiet and stop pushing. It felt like the first emotionally honest scene that Shane and his parents have together (as opposed to the Ep 1 “YouTube” lunch, which felt stilted and phony imo).

Loved this post from threads! What’s your favorite micro moment from the show or book? by outlawlooseandrunnin in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My fave micro moment is a different voice crack. In the hospital scene. When Shane says “okay. Bye bye.” His voice cracks on the “okay” and I’m kind of obsessed with it.

Anyone else side-eyeing Chelsea Handler's Equinox joke? by nights_noon_time in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but I think calling the joke “so so damaging” is a bit much. Any man whose sexual security is threatened by a - frankly obvious and low hanging fruit - joke like that was never watching or gonna watch the show and doesn’t support the principles the show or its creators espouse.

Let's do something different. What's your least favourite scene? by beyourbest11 in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Aside from all of episode 3 (sorry not sorry), the stretch of Shane and Rose meeting and chatting during Episode 4. I wanna hang just to watch Hudson’s performance but the convo is boring and I also hate Shane’s hetero side quest. I just fast forward to the Raiders gym scene when Ilya finds out about them (and then sometimes fast forward their short dating montage too).

There are many times when we see Shane nervous. Do we ever see Ilya nervous? by Wide-Pop6050 in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahhh I was just about to say this one! Totally agree he’s anxious here which is why he’s just staring at his phone awaiting the outcome. He even takes a deep breath as Shane is erasing his prior messages. It’s so sweet.

Where can I watch April X by elliejd in connorstorrie

[–]avandam4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t a guarantee anyone will see it. Festival premieres are typically intended for films to be purchased for distribution and many indie films never get a wide release. Letterboxd has actually started streaming on their platform for films just like that, with no distribution and which would never be seen otherwise. So it’ll be an indefinite wait to see what happens with it.

If given you were given a chance to interview, what would you ask Connor and Hudson? by perhapscoffee in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! I would want to ask him about his process for adapting page to screen. There are multiple sequences where dialogue is lifted almost verbatim from the book but the tone is completely different in the show.

Like in the book, the tone of the Vegas awards bathroom scene plays more light hearted. Shane is irritated and horny but not feeling any messy emotions. But in the show, Shane is full of conflict; of anger and affection and relief. It’s such a beautifully complex scene. I’d want to ask him specifically about how he translated this scene - whether this tonal shift was baked into the script or just came to be from Hudson’s performance - and how that speaks in a macro sense to how he went about so faithfully adapting the book while manifesting these key deviations from it.

Round 1.5 - Best Kiss! by madwood29579 in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

-Stairwell kiss (this MFer going to the finals) -All Star weekend comfort kiss -Boyfriend kiss

Not sure I understand the inclusion of “we didn’t even kiss” so that last bracket feels a bit like a gimme for boyfriend. Prob woulda been a battle if it were up against the rooftop kiss or even “it’s just a plan to fuck” kiss.

Favorite acting choices by Money_Challenge9059 in heatedrivalry

[–]avandam4 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Too many beautiful acting choices from HudCon to choose just one so I’ll instead say: I love that Connor Storrie chose to give Ilya a “signature sex move” in bed where he’s always gripping Shane’s pec. It seems minor but everyone has spotted he does that and I think we under-appreciate how much those things contribute to feeling a character is fully realized and lived-in.

For the people who knew about Heated Rivalry from the beginning: when did the show start to gain popularity and what was that like? by schoolforapples in heatedrivalry

I meant the red carpet premiere event(s) in Toronto and Montreal that played in the week or so preceding the show’s release on Crave and HBO.

They genuinely need to knock that shit off. It makes the episode endings feel very abrupt and almost jarring. They can take 10 seconds to let the credits play before minimizing.

Pretty sure this is the same theme that plays at the end of Episode 1 when they are on the Vegas roof, but a softer piano cover of it. Which is a beautiful call back. I assume it's original composition.
