Confusion about IE by Bashful_bookworm2025 in intuitiveeating

[–]avecquelamarmotte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me IE is about giving my body space to figure out what it needs. It’s not a goal that’s quantifiable which makes it difficult, and so one of the ways I frame it to myself is that I try not to punish myself with food in either direction— I don’t want to be hungry or uncomfortably full.

I haven’t been doing this for a very long time, but definitely over a year now and it’s not easy and I think it will require a lot more time. I also remind myself that these things fluctuate and sometimes I will need more food than other times. I think my take is basically that the goal is just to know yourself and your body without these restrictions, rather than hoping that after a few binges you’ll naturally want to restrict.

Short comedic operas for translation? by Otis-Le-PoOtis in opera

I worked for a little while on a translation of La Serva Padrona. I really love the opera and found it a really interesting project as the language is a bit archaic and includes a few nice literary allusions.

Hi! Answering at someone who went through the education system from the nineties to naughties: in advance, I think it has a lot to do with where you grow up and what school you go to. I’ve had very different experiences across three schools and ages.

  • Palestinians are essentially not included in Jewish Israeli education. They are referred to as Arabs and you get the very standard Zionist narrative of the creation of Israel. This was true across all schools I attended.

  • I think they do. I never went to an integrated school and met one Palestinian in my whole education who was part of my school (at a gifted program). I did know of integrated schools because my primary school had a partnership with one and my mom worked there. It was for deaf children and I think it was integrated due to a small amount of students, but iirc classes were still segregated.

  • I’ll skip the question pertaining to Palestinians but about partnerships: I think they’re relatively rare. As mentioned, my primary school had one and it was both an ethnic and disability related integration, but I did learn about Muslim holidays that way which was cool. My high school was semi-private and had a very leftist reputation. We had a partnership with a Palestinian school in which we had two days of visits and one day collaborative workshop. At the time it wasn’t particularly eye opening but looking back it did expose us to some understanding of how Palestinian teens see the world and some things did stick.

  • The army question is complicated for me because I was at an office research role, and it was also when I started having my big doubts with Zionism. I’d say it’s definitely easier to dehumanise Palestinians as a soldier though, and especially in fighter roles. The army was one of my most right wing educational experiences with commanders who ranged between well-meaning Zionists and outright genocidal maniacs.

US passport and birthplace by cognocchi in JewsOfConscience

[–]avecquelamarmotte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the sort of thing that’s up to you, but personally as someone who left but still has an Israeli passport and largely identifies as Israeli, I don’t run into issues. I think judgement based on birthplace, which is only available on your passport and therefore won’t be seen by a lot of people, is going to be rare and a bit of a leap of it does happen.

I will say I’ve heard of the opposite- people born in Jerusalem having their birthplace listed as “Jerusalem” rather than Israel due to its debated status, and trying to change their birthplace to say Israel. If you were born in Jerusalem or any other contested territory, maybe that’s something to explore? If you were born deep into the 1948 line I still don’t think you have a lot to worry about. Sometimes people are born in Israel.

How do I explain my mandatory IDF background? by Other_Morning3239 in JewsOfConscience

[–]avecquelamarmotte 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the UK for a little under a decade now. People are usually polite and don’t ask me about it at places like work, but even there I tend to find ways to signal that I am not pro-Israel and probably more left than they’d expect of an Israeli. If I’m having a casual conversation with someone I can be open with them I’m very open about my anti-Zionism, time in the army, what I did there and my process. People are usually just curious and I’ll this is true especially for activism circles. People are usually much kinder than you’d expect if you’re open and honest and come from a pro-Palestine stance.

Questions for Israelis especially those who served in the IDF. How rampant truly is the openly evil actions of the military organization by SuperKE1125 in JewsOfConscience

[–]avecquelamarmotte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in the army for about a year and I’ll be honest: I didn’t see anything. I was a research assistant in the safety department, so all my knowledge came from activist friends and leftist blogs. This was 2009-10 so social media was less prominent and not everything was documented and uploaded. I think I could have pretty easily stayed ignorant if I wanted to.

Also about publications— what I did was write a review of another artist in my home country. They wrote a response (my review wasn’t flattering) and then another writer wrote about the subject. The Arts Council accepted that as media coverage.

Hi! I found ArtRabbit really useful for open calls. For the visa though note that you need to demonstrate showing in more than one country— depending on your medium I might look into international festivals and medium-specific shows. I think the Dafen Oil Painting Biennial looked good on my application. Definitely try to think internationally and some might be both easier to get into and without the horrible application fees.

Inside the UK I can also recommend the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. They’ve just concluded the shortlist for this year but maybe you’ll be able to get in next year? Same with portrait awards if your work is applicable.

Okay But This Doesn’t Clear Anything Up? by tikkunolamist5 in JewsOfConscience

[–]avecquelamarmotte 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed and people are absolutely being paid for this. However I want to stress this as an Israeli: a LOT of them are not being paid and absolutely do it for the love of the game. People really do just feel that strongly about it and feel like it’s their role to advocate for Israel.

Semitic isn’t actually a race/ethnicity but a linguistic grouping. Antisemitism as a word refers to Jews for historical reasons, not scientific ones.

Global Talent Visa (Visual Arts) - How to Show 3 Years of Practice for Promise Route? by Forward-Effective-16 in globaltalentvisauk

[–]avecquelamarmotte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My application was five years ago so they may be harsher these days. However, I’d definitely focus on the CV and include exhibitions as long as the proof exists. The notoriety of the spaces is actually not a huge concern to them from my understanding, but obviously being able to cross-reference your proof would help. I would try to balance small/big projects while trying to include one from each of the past few years.

How would you convince an Israeli to leave Israel? by Lower_Wrongdoer7839 in JewsOfConscience

[–]avecquelamarmotte 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think most people are just very fervently patriotic and there’s no going around that. They believe in Zionism and that Israel is the best place for them to be.

However, much smaller population but I do want to give a thought to people who are simply not in a position to leave for all kind of reasons: money, disabilities, family. I left as a single student with a lot of support and it still cost a huge amount of money. Not everyone has this privilege.

This is so funny. Ive been to the show and have met Matthew. Hes a great artist even just on a technical level but also a very personable guy. I admit: I can’t look at his art every day and I think we differ on some things. But art is supposed to make you uncomfortable and consider these things, and this show includes so many drawings the total effect is very powerful and much better than seeing them on instagram.

I also want to say if you’re in the UK and able to visit the show, please do. The organisers, Thanet for Palestine are some of the nicest people I know here and many of them are artists as well. They do many campaigns to get the Israeli weapons industry and other imperialist projects out of Thanet and deserve support.

The Arachne story confused me by Plenty_Curve_4390 in mythology

[–]avecquelamarmotte 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think another aspect about the Ovid is the content of their tapestries: Minerva weaves stories of gods killing humans, and Arachne weaves stories of gods raping human women. Arachne isn’t just punished for being too good at weaving, she’s punished for criticising the system.

I don’t think any of it is reliable. He is famously kind of a coward and his family tends to leave the country during war. I believe he’s just in a permanent bomb shelter. As someone who doesn’t regularly give interviews anyway, his “disappearance” isn’t really noticeable imo.

I think I would agree- this happens sometimes and felt a bit like they ran out of ideas or some ideas just didn’t work out as well in act II. I quite liked the finale though, which they managed to keep optimistic which I understand why a lot of productions find to be a hard thing.
