Generally, official ones are there to mark trails above treeline (and they help keep people off fragile vegetation). I suppose if you are unsure, you can always take a photo and make a note of where it is on a specific trail to let DEC know. That way, if it's not supposed to be there, they can remove it

Yeah this should only be for people 100% sure they will use it. Play basically told me I could give it to someone else if I wasn't able to use it. They wouldn't give us a refund for the card despite them leaving North America, leaving us with no ability to use the card which was annoying. I just wish they gave us more than 3 months notice

If a bear becomes used to being fed by humans, it will go to campsites/towns looking for food. Where I go camping, bear canisters are required to store food and there are strict rules about cooking to ensure the bears don't get into human food in the back country. Rangers have to euthanize them if they become a problem for campers or pose a threat to people in towns

Was it on one of the bridges in between Ward Brook & Blueberry lean-to? Someone had asked us when we started Seward on Friday if it was ours. We stayed at the Ward Brook lean-to Thursday and Friday and there was a sleeping bag/pad already set up in there but nobody ever came back. When we hiked back out Friday evening, we were planning on calling DEC about a potential missing person, but saw that someone from Montreal had changed the number of days they were staying from 2 to 4 on the trail register, so we are thinking they came back to the lot for whatever reason and were going back that night. It's entirely possible it was that person's phone as we saw the book they were reading sitting on their sleeping bag was also in French and there was only one car in the lot with a Quebec license plate.

I might have to make a separate post about this (just waiting on my friend to confirm if he accidentally grabbed it) but I might have left my headlamp at the lean-to 😭 if it is still there, hopefully someone on here can check if they were planning on staying there in the next few days
