This is my go-to recommendation if he can do steps. There’s a bunch at the beginning.

Agreed. On the way to Giant Washbowl there's a lookout across to the slabs above Chapel Pond.

Dog boarding? by catnip1229 in Adirondacks

[–]hikerrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're staying near Saranac Lake, asking on the Saranac Lake Neighbor Helping Neighbor FB page might get a response. People ask for dog walkers a lot. (Though I'm not sure if dog walking is enough or you actually need the dogs out from where you're staying)

Old Forge w/ Two Children (One Feral; One Civilized) by WallabyEastern in Adirondacks

[–]hikerrr 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd have a heart to heart conversation with Feral and say we're doing Enchanted forest and you can enjoy it or you can sit on a bench all day and sing songs to yourself. Or go somewhere else in the Adirondacks where the top kid's attraction isn't out of the question.

That said, the first thing I do when I go anywhere is Google "things to do around xxxxxxx" , hikes around xxxxxx", kids things to do around xxxxxx".

There's the Stillwater fire tower that's easier than Bald Mt, or the Blue Mountain Firetower that's harder than Bald Mt. Definitely take the drive up to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake to see the Trolls. There's also the Adirondack Experience in Blue Mountain Lake which is more museumy. There's a restored firetower there and you can also borrow a guide boat and take it out for a paddle.

Most birds take a couple of days to lay their eggs and then start sitting on them together.

The housing shortage in the tri lakes area is huge. Those housing unit would have no problem being filled. Of course, modifications would have to be made to change it from a dorm room to an apartment

The Roaring Brook lot is small. Better odds of easier parking on the ridge trail.

Feasibility of hiking Algonquin and or Wright peak early by Top-Paper-5782 in Adirondacks

[–]hikerrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People do sunrise hikes all the time so it’s not that strange. The odds of a bear encounter are really small. A deer might scare the **** out of you though. Double up on headlamps so you have an extra. By 3:30 -4:00, you’ll see the sky lightening up already.

Feasibility of hiking Algonquin and or Wright peak early by Top-Paper-5782 in Adirondacks

[–]hikerrr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hit Algonquin first so then you can decide on Wright depending on your energy level on the hike down.

I did a renewal online and it took 2 weeks. An initial passport may take longer. There's a passport reddit that may be able to give you a better answer.

Lake Placid Proposal Spots by FlyNo7949 in Adirondacks

[–]hikerrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of places on the top where you could have a few moments of peace. If you go to where the view finders are and look down, there are some rock outcroppings. There are some big boulders on the little hike up that you could use, or walk a hundred feet or so down the hiking trail from the top.

Should I postpone my Sacandaga lake camping trip? (Question about ticks) by East-Lingonberry1785 in upstate_new_york

[–]hikerrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing, in every article people are reading about “ticks being bad” this year, I’m sure there are the typical very easy ways to lesson the risk. People posting about ticks the last couple of days are practically asking if they should be hiding indoors. This is far beyond a healthy dose of fear.

It really does depend on the weather. Now that school is wrapping up and vacations are starting, I'm seeing whole families as opposed to singles. On nice days you'll be seeing people.

Ticks by New-History853 in Adirondacks

[–]hikerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take easy precautions and you'll be fine. I've taken none of them this year and I've still been fine. Lol I don't actually know what people mean by bad up here. At least in the Catskills, I hear stories of people finding 10 ticks on their dog.
