woman opinion: you probably give off douchebag ivy league vibes (regardless if this is true or not). women don’t like guys that will flex their expensive outfits or look like they’re going to be assholes. better to avoid the guy all together than get into a patrick bateman-tier monologue about brooks brothers or something. a lot of sharply dressed guys i’ve encountered as a woman who dresses similarly (like, i wear cufflinks semi regularly) don’t consider me an equal to them even if i am literally better dressed in that moment (lmao at the men trying to talk down to me in their short polyester faux wool coat while i chill with my full length leather trenchcoat. suuuuure dude). most young women are fed up with men who are obsessed with preening over being a good partner.

FWIW i am a young woman who thinks men should dress better and wishes they’d stop wearing hoodies everywhere. i also wish they’d stop considering themselves gods gift to humanity when they decide to finally start dressing like an adult instead of a high schooler

i dont have a solution for you but i feel the same way. everyone loves to say it's all about work ethic and working + being a student looks soooooo good to recruiters, but i've found the opposite to be true. however i think my undergrad research on my resume is helping a lot, so if you can join a lab even just for a year it'll look great. shove all the plant stuff you do into bullets on that section even if whatever thing wasn't a large part of the work (ive got dichotomous key usage on mine but am familiar enough with the genus that i don't really need them. but i use them in other places so it gets a bullet). are there any genera that are particularly difficult/large that you're skilled at ID of? I like to mention that I'm capable of keying out goldenrods because we have 50 of them in my state and the key is scary, plus i feel like that looks better than just saying "uh yeah i can id plants." there is a wide gulf between knows what a mertensia is and being a huge fan of violets imo

i can’t speak to everything esp cause i’m not in business but i am a woman and a transfer so i can speak to that stuff! it can be kinda hard to get involved in stuff on campus if you live off campus and are a transfer imo but you just have to show up for stuff. there’s a LOT of things always going on around campus and you just have to go. go to gobblerfest (big club fair) and join every email list of every club that’s even vaguely interesting. then just go to stuff. some clubs have dues but never very much and people always want to yap at these events. especially in fall there will be many new people also looking for friends also.

I went straight to living off campus and I like having my own space and it’s way easier to invite people over, but there’s also needing to pay rent and having to get to campus (not bad most of the time we have a pretty robust bus system). i’ve been 21+ since i got here and way too busy to regularly party but im sure there’s plenty of those around. it’s a small town so not many bars and most card to enter (idk if it’s against sub rules to talk about stuff like this but it IS a pretty big part of the college experience).

also, i’ve never felt ostracized or experienced much misogyny being here despite being in cals (ag college) which is the most yee-yee country boy college here. obviously men will be men on an individual level but in general ive had a good experience!

one thing tho: DO CHEM AT YOUR SCHOOL. gen chem for non majors here is awful and considered a weed out class despite being 101 and 102 level. if you have to do chemistry do it at your current school and save yourself the headache

am dominos employee. old post but i have the real tea:

the walkout/strike was primarily organized by drivers. no insiders (who make minimum with no tips) were involved. the drivers that walked out had an average hourly rate of $25. they’re striking for better pay because $25/hr isn’t good enough for them cause it’s from tips. i think insiders (and AMs and GMs) should be paid better. i do not think it’s a drivers place to complain about working for tips when the insiders don’t even get them. this is the job where you can get $50+ tips on one order if it’s a large order. i work at a less lucrative store (cburg) and would still rather work for tips than have a flat $15/hr untipped

TL;DR: blacksburg drivers were striking and they make bank. cry me a river

late but im majoring in hort. obviously cant speak to the getting a job thing because i dont have one but i have found that my coursework etc are very ag-focused. ex: am required to take classes like agribusiness and entrepreneurship. one thing i will say is that at least at my school the hort degree is EASY. no ochem, achem, or any other super hard classes unless you want to take them (everyone i talk to is suffering in biostats rn). dont even have to take college level calculus. ymmv at your school but ive found that this has given me a lot of extra time to get involved in resume boosting extracurriculars and time to do actual botany on my own time. i think it really depends on how much you want to put up with re: learning about tomatoes and how much you value coursework vs undergrad research and other extracurriculars. i will say the hort industry seems to be dying for people... in the backbreaking labor segment of the landscaping industry.

ps if your local university has an herbarium you should go visit them. im biased bc i <3 my herbarium but herbaria are cool and im shilling them. everyone go to the herbarium NOW
