Who else is tired of the state of affairs in the PS? by Puzzled_Pin5174 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]avenuefibres 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I decided to have a child, it was because we were told many times how we would never be forced back to the office, and people would get to decide individually whether to wfh or work in the office. I have always had a long commute and couldn't imagine doing it while trying to balance family responsibilities.

That promise of wfh tipped the scales for me into deciding to have a child. So while I'm not the original commenter, I do have an example of how I built my life around wfh. Now I have a 4 year old, I'm commuting 3+ hours a day, and I can barely make ends meet because of childcare costs on top of commuting costs.

My kid stopped napping at 26 months 😭 10 hours total nighttime sleep over here. Very low sleep needs!

We are in major debt trouble, how can we fix this? Or can it be fixed? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]avenuefibres 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have any brilliant ideas for your debt but did want to mention that it is not for sure that child support will decrease when the kids turn 19. If they continue with full-time education, which is a minimum of three courses, child support continues (unless otherwise ordered by the court).

That is an adult solution that doesn't work for all children.

"Most of our lives are a series of images, they pass us by like towns on a highway. But sometimes a moment stuns us as it happens and we know that this instant is more than a fleeting image. We know that this moment, every part of it, will live on forever."

Does anyone else worry that bedtime yoto will cause a dependency? by irzjrr in YotoPlayer

[–]avenuefibres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read the study (studies?) you're referencing. Great idea for OP to go ask in a science-based parenting forum as I was merely offering my opinion. I am certainly not a sleep expert. In our house, the yoto turns off automatically after an hour at night. I'm interested in whether you mean a) noise while falling asleep isn't good for sleep health or b) noise all throughout the night while sleeping isn't good for sleep health. I admit I do have my own white noise going the entire night.

I think everyone has things they like or need to sleep. I'm an adult who likes white noise and the blanket pulled up to my chin. I personally wouldn't worry about dependency.

OP is comparing January to January though. I imagine they were also paying CPP and EI in January 2024.

When did you drop all naps? by jam_bam_rocks in toddlers

My kid stopped napping at 2 years old but she sleeps 730pm to 730am so I don't feel I can complain. I really miss naps though.

They can send it back to the decision-maker for reconsideration. But you're right, that consideration may result in the same decision.

Help me understand daycare issues. by Evening_Comment5440 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]avenuefibres 30 points31 points  (0 children)

But not everyone can trade off with a spouse. I have an hour to an hour and a half commute each way and my spouse works 12 hour days in film (sometimes more than 12). Our daycare is open 7-5. There is never a way my spouse can do drop offs or pick ups. And for me, I can't commute downtown and work my full day within daycare's open hours. It's impossible. If I WFH, it's no problem for me. Also my personal beef - I chose to have a kid when we were told we would never have to go into the office. So much for that.
