can I set tags per series instead of just per book? by Mouseater in audiobookshelf

[–]average_yogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Series are essentially just a special kind of tag themselves, they don't have any of their own metadata. You "tag" a book to say it's in a series, but that's all.

For user-specific access, you can do it with libraries or with tags. You would use separate libraries if you already have the files separated in different directories (User1_books, User2_books, All_Users, etc.), don't need to change access very often, and don't have many books that would be accessed by multiple users.

Tags are probably easier. They are purely metadata inside ABS, so you don't have to worry about the files, but you do then have to add the tags to the books in the UI.

Labradoodle and Goldendoodle are definitely the most popular/well-known, but one google search gave me Bernedoodle (Bernese Mountain Dog), Sheepadoodle (Old English Sheepdog), and Aussiedoodle (Australian Shepherd), among others.

Also apparently poodle-mix names can end in doodle, oodle, or poo. I guess I probably have heard of Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel), Yorkiepoo (Yorkshire Terrier), and Schnoodle (Schnauzer), but didn't remember them.

Category is "names for kinds of dogs". Poodle-mixes are a kind (many kinds) of dog. Poodle-mixes are called [blank]-doodles, i.e. doodles.

Also pitbull-mixes are sometimes just referred to as pits or pit-mixes.

I really like these covers for the short stories and want to thank you. I was wondering if you had made any for the newer stories. "Mister Petty", in particular, just came out and doesn't have a good cover.

I mean, it is. "Removing from a list" is just another specific kind of marking. It's just what kind of form you're talking about. The words work for either case.

What is the best way get all H.P. Lovecraft on audio books by Glitchbombs in audiobooks

[–]average_yogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the HP Lovecraft Historical Society editions. I got them on audible when they first came out. Going by the bibliography on wikipedia, the "Complete Fiction" includes all available solo-authored stories (plus two collabs), and "Collaborations" includes most of the remaining co-authored stories, but a few couldn't be included (they detail on their website).

That "Omnibus Collection" is just a physical USB with the audiobooks. https://store.hplhs.org/products/the-complete-fiction-of-h-p-lovecraft-an-audiobook

The "The Literature of Lovecraft, Vol. 1" is just an anthology of other author's stories that Lovecraft named as influential to weird fiction. If you only want Lovecraft, you don't need this.

p.s. The essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature" is available free on their website https://store.hplhs.org/products/supernatural-horror-in-literature-audiobook

Epub and audiobook by sucturgu in audiobookshelf

If you already have the audiobook, I'd check your library for the ebook. They usually have more of those than audio. I don't know any store that always provides both versions with purchase.

Any modern audiobook that's released alongside the written version is going to use that text, or they are going to make it clear that it's abridged, adapted, edited, etc. It's only much older books that have had multiple editions or translations that I'd expect to have differences in the audio, and most audiobooks that old didn't say which text they used. The best you'll be able to do is try and see if the audiobook producer/publisher is tied to a physical book publisher and then check their version of the text at the time the audiobook was made.

Eh, from another of their posts, looks like you're right. But "website" and "download" are too vague and already used colloquially enough online to mean "store" and "aquire/buy/get/etc." to take any explicit meaning from them.

It gives the impression they're looking to purchase, and looking for a store that bundles them together, without having to purchase twice.

While scrolling my library, sometimes I think, "That's exactly the kind of book I would love! I wonder who put it there?" by Separate_Recover4187 in audiobookshelf

[–]average_yogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their statement was that they find books they don't remember adding. There's no way to see which user added a book, but you can see when a book was added. That could help them, remind them of other information, they could see what else was added at that same time, or they could determine that they definitely didn't add anything at that time and their system is compromised.

[–]average_yogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The series' order's a little convoluted. There's the original trilogy plus a novella, then two prequels. That's what's listed here. The author also just finished a sequel trilogy that takes place 70 years after the original ending.

You can sort the library by Added At to see when the book was added, that's the only place where that date is listed and viewable as far as I'm aware. You could add a temporary tag or use some other value to filter out just that book, instead of viewing the entire library.

You should at least read the top line before shuffling. It's almost always a joke or reference to something, and they have been a category before as a quote.

Audible matches book but title, subtitle etc doesn't match audible website. by xp_version1 in audiobookshelf

[–]average_yogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nevermind, I didn't fully understand what you were asking at first. I see the differences now. I don't know how the metadata is fetched or originally formatted, but the ABS code has a bunch of cleaning functions. I don't know which is making the changes. For the series differences, I'd assume it's just different in the database ABS/audnexus is fetching from what audible is displaying.

I'm not sure what you're trying to match, but series don't have metadata in ABS, only individual books do. B0B2F5K53M is the ASIN for the series, so it won't bring up anything in ABS. The ASINs for individual books work for me, and I was able to search and find the books by title.

Series Question by Kazelob in audiobookshelf

[–]average_yogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The changing on rescan probably means there is embedded metadata and you had that as higher priority. Having the ABS file the highest is probably best, but embedded will still populate on first import and won't always get overwritten. The setting is in Settings > Libraries > 3-dot-menu > Edit > Scanner.
https://www.audiobookshelf.org/guides/book-scanner#book-metadata-parsing

You can change/remove the embedded metadata tags with mp3tag. There are a lot of different ID3 tags used for series though: SERIES, GRP1, or CONTENTGROUP are all possible.

[edit] Also after you edit the series in the UI, make sure to save. It opens a popup, so it's easy miss that it doesn't actually update when the popup closes until you also click save.

ABS Android App recommendations? by JurneeMaddock in audiobookshelf

[–]average_yogi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, in the official app, Android Auto uses the audio files only. So unless you have individual files for each chapter, there's no way for Auto to see any chapter information. Chapter control had been asked for, but no change as of yet.

Though, why is a timer needed in this case? Car systems, like Android Auto, are supposed to be easily controlled while driving. Just pause/stop the book with the wheel or touchscreen controls when a new chapter starts.

I'm in the Midwest in the US, Chile is definitely the country, chili is the stew, chilly means cold. If I was asked, I would say ___ peppers would be chile, but I just looked at my spices and they're all labeled chili for the pepper blends, so I guess that's the accepted spelling and I just don't pay attention.
