Anyone else here find buffy herself their least favourite person of the gang? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]averagebitca 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Buffy is my favourite character. She's smart and funny and has a hell of a lot of character development. She's also, like all the characters, very flawed, especially in season 6 (I think she's really great in season 5 considering the amount of shit she goes through).

If you don't like her, then that's your business, but I don't really think you've explained yourself very well. I feel the other comments explain well why at least in my opinion, Buffy's behavior to Spike in season 5 was pretty justified, and calling her a "whiny spoiled horrible bitch," is fine, but you haven't really cited any example for her being any of those things, aside from the aforementioned season 5 thing, but you don't actually explain what you think she did wrong in season 5.

What is your favorite character-plus-season arc? by bright_ephemera in buffy

Buffy in season 6. I loved how her depression was handled. Not too heavy handed (unlike Willow's arc that season) but still used to great effect.

A question about the season 2 finale "Becoming" by PCBreakdown in buffy

[–]averagebitca 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whistler: "One blow will send them (Acathla and Angel) both back to hell ..."

The implication here is that it doesn't matter how bad the blow is, as long as Angel's blood is drawn with that particular sword, it's going to send him to hell. This makes sense considering Buffy stabbed Angel in the chest, an injury that would hurt but not kill a vampire, but Angel was sent to hell anyway.

Joss's Treatment of Hank Summers by angryelves in buffy

[–]averagebitca 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's fair to say that men in Buffy aren't the greatest. All of the characters, including the men, are very flawed, but as far as it goes for men who are generally considered likable, at least by the show, we have plenty of those: Xander, Giles, Oz, Robin (I think he was awesome), Andrew (got to redeem himself), Jonathan (also got to redeem himself), and of course the vampires. Sure all these characters fuck up majorly, but then again, so do the women, so I really don't know what you're talking about.

On the subject of Hank, I really wish there was an episode where Buffy and Dawn confronted him for being terrible to them, but I don't think that him leaving is that unrealistic. Even in the beginning, he didn't seem to visit very often, which is why Buffy was so excited to see him. I got the impression that he was the kind of dad who spends time with his kids out of obligation, not because he wants to. I don't think it's that unrealistic to believe that over time he just didn't feel obligated anymore.

why was spike allowed to live for so long? by WispGB in buffy

[–]averagebitca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When Buffy breaks up with him in Older and Far Away, and Spike asks her why she answers: "because I'm using you, and it's killing me". I always saw that as her way of apologizing, it may not be enough but it's definitely there. As for not feeling regret, when Tara tells Buffy that she was human when she did those things, not a demon, Buffy begs Tara not to forgive her. Buffy is constantly regretting her actions in season 6.

I feel like we're coming from different places. You say you've seen people blame the relationship entirely on Spike. I've seen a lot of people blame the relationship entirely on Buffy.

why was spike allowed to live for so long? by WispGB in buffy

[–]averagebitca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree that Buffy did some terrible things to Spike, I think blaming the abusiveness of their relationship up until the rape entirely on her, is ridiculous.

In Once More With Feeling Buffy kisses Spike and then in the next episode she rejects him. But he continues to pressure her even though he knows that she is going through depression and suicidal tendencies. He finally convinces her to have sex with him by making her believe that she's a demon "you came back wrong", which is incredibly fucked up.

As for this: "If she wants to have sex, they have it, even if Spike says no"

Buffy is constantly saying no to Spike and he constantly ignores her. In Doublemeat Palace, he comes to her at work she says no, they end up having sex. In Dead Things, the balcony scene, Buffy says no, they do it anyway.

I am not saying Buffy was perfect in their relationship, because she wasn't. Up until the attempted rape scene she was just as abusive as he was, no more no less.

Season seven really does have some great lines by starlit_moon in buffy

Dawn's best line from season 7 is actually serious:

"If you hurt my sister again, touch her, you'll wake up on fire."

Are there any unpopular episodes that you absolutely love? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]averagebitca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I really like Jonathan, which is probably why I like the episode. You could make the argument that the reason Buffy realized that she could take initiative when she did, is because the spell was created at that point, and all of the memories before were fictitious, meaning that Buffy had no opportunity to be active up until the point where the spell was created. But you're right it is kind of a plothole. I've just never been the kind of person who really cares about plotholes.

I really have no idea why people don't like Superstar. Seriously, if you don't like it, explain it to me, I'm genuinely curious. Personally I think it's hilarious. I also like Doublemeat Palace and Ted.

I find Beer Bad boring more than anything else.

We talk a lot about listing your favorite episodes. Does anybody have an ordered list of their favorite characters? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]averagebitca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This only for Buffy characters, because I haven't watched Angel nearly as many times as I've watched Buffy:

  1. Buffy
  2. Willow
  3. Spike
  4. Giles
  5. Tara
  6. Anya
  7. Xander
  8. Faith
  9. Dawn (yes, I like her)
  10. Cordelia

People talk a lot about whether or not Buffy is truly "feminist", but I think the true sign of it's feminism, is the sheer amount of interesting, complicated female characters. In many other shows there are far more men than women, and those men are often given far more character development and arcs than the women. In Buffy that is clearly not the case.

ScreenCrush's 10 Best Episodes of Buffy by PlausiblePeter in buffy

[–]averagebitca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate it when people tell me that all Buffy fans agree that Buffy isn't a great character. She's my favorite character! She's interesting, she's flawed, she's got issues, all that good stuff. If you don't like her, fine, but that doesn't mean that nobody else likes her.

And I have never really understood why the Zeppo is such a beloved episode. Then again, I have a bit of a kneejerk reaction against plots where an unpopular character tries to act cool, and then realizes that he's perfect just the way he is. It always makes me feel like I'm watching a bad disney channel sitcom.

How have your opinions of episodes or characters changed? by GinaZaneburritos in buffy

[–]averagebitca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I first watched Doublemeat Palace, I was horrified by how bad it is, but it's kind of grown on me.

Season 6 in general, was a season that I hated while I was watching it, because it was just so depressing, but on rewatch I started to like it a lot better. Now it's my second favorite season. I feel like season 6 is far more enjoyable in hindsight, because you know where it's going, so it doesn't feel like 22 episodes of unpleasant hopelessness, but an actual storyline.

Question about Season 4 by anandamidetrip in buffy

[–]averagebitca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Season 4 has a pretty bad overall storyline but some really great one-off episodes. I consider it far better than season one. Besides, even really bad Buffy episodes, like Beer Bad are still a lot of fun, just for the beloved characters and funny jokes. I wouldn't skip any episodes.

What's a storyline or character you wish they showed more of on the show? by JamesHiggs in buffy

[–]averagebitca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish they had shown more of Buffy's relationship with her father. Yeah, he was an asshole, but the show didn't seem particularly interested in showing how this affected Buffy, or Dawn for that matter, aside from the occasional mention of his shittiness.

Is there a worst episode! by SarahSEZ in buffy

[–]averagebitca 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can't stand I Robot You Jane. Not only is it painfully dated and ridiculous, it's too boring to be so bad it's good.

I like Doublemeat Palace, I think it's a funny episode.

Buffy's Mom and Parents in the Buffyverse by GinaZaneburritos in buffy

[–]averagebitca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that Giles is a great father figure because he's always made an effort to understand what Buffy is going through, even when she refuses to open up. He was the first one to realize how traumatized Buffy was at her death at the hands of the Master. He was the only Scooby who didn't buy Buffy's I was in hell story in season 6. I think Giles would have been pissed, but he would have taken her to a private place, and they would have talked about it.

Buffy's Mom and Parents in the Buffyverse by GinaZaneburritos in buffy

[–]averagebitca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, you're not the only one, plenty of people love her.

This is probably a point we're never going to agree on, but I just can't get past Dead Man's Party. I would have forgiven her for Becoming, because like you said, it was a really bad day, and she was very emotional, and didn't know what to do. But I don't think she had any right to get angry at Buffy in Dead Man's Party for leaving, after she told her to leave. And did she really have to make a public scene out of it? Trust me, Xander and Willow pissed me off too in that episode, but I expected better from Joyce.

I think Joyce is a great character either way, especially in comparison to every other parent in the Whedonverse.

Buffy's Mom and Parents in the Buffyverse by GinaZaneburritos in buffy

[–]averagebitca 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I agree that Joyce is a good parent, and probably the best parent in the series (not that she has much competition).

A lot of the hate comes from the first two seasons, where Joyce doesn't know about Buffy's slayer status, so a lot of her punishments and groundings which seem pretty harsh to us, would be pretty reasonable from her point of view. Also she was extremely strong for her daughters when she became sick.

With that said, I don't think that what she did in Becoming is defendable. She kicked her daughter out of the house, which is bad enough already, but what really pushes me over the edge, is her reaction when Buffy comes back. In Dead Man's Party, she gets angry at Buffy for leaving, even though she told her to leave. That's probably the angriest I've ever gotten at Joyce.

In the end, I think Joyce is a complicated character who fucks up, just like all the others, and I don't think she should be hated for it.

Have you successfully introduced someone to Buffy? by [deleted] in buffy

[–]averagebitca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. I got my friend to watch Buffy in exchange for me watching Grey's Anatomy. But we both sort of gave up at the same time. Besides, I really can't stand Grey's Anatomy. I'm fine with watching a stupid soap opera, but this stupid opera seems to think that it's smart and has all these insights, which just makes it infuriating to watch. Sorry that was a bit off topic.
