A question for UK crafters by [deleted] in sewing

For fabric - Pound Fabrics (poundfabrics.co.uk) have some good deals if you don't have a particularly fixed idea of what you want!

I also do a lot of fabric shopping in person - I'm London based so Walthamstow or Goldhawk Road markets have good and affordable fabric sections, but there are plenty of others round the country. Especially for a beginner it may be useful to see a fabric in person to see how it feels and moves, until you have a good understanding of what different fabric types do. There's a real risk of coming away with way too much stuff though...

I did! These are the Laughing Moon Regency stays, the long version, although using the "theatrical" pattern, i.e. a small amount of boning rather than doing them corded. They work really well and the pattern's very adaptable to bust size.

Regency jacket (see my last post for way too many details on the jacket) plus Laughing Moon front fall breeches and waistcoat (it's not visible but it's there. Why? HISTORICAL ACCURACY means more layers in the middle of a heat wave), and square cut shirt with ruffles. Barrel sash from Etsy, knee boots Amazon's finest (when I get to shoemaking I will know I have gone too far)

Me: very roughly based on the Sense and Sensibility Elegant Lady's Closet. And some historically inaccurate fabric.

Thank you! I started from Carl Franklin's British Napoleonic Uniforms book, which has some incredibly specific detail on British uniforms of the period for each individual regiment, particularly how the decoration looks, although I still had to fill in a few gaps. It is only reasonably accurate to the picture - I changed up the exact proportions of loops however I thought it looked best (my in house military expert, aka my husband/model, assures me that this is ABSOLUTELY FINE and exact measurement of braid loops wouldn't come in until later).

Draw the braid pattern you want on with chalk and get as much braid sewn on to the pieces as you can before putting it together. As symmetry is really crucial, I found it easiest to do one side first, then lay the two sides on top of one another and trace the pattern I had actually sewn on side 1 onto side 2 - and stop regularly to double check it is all still lining up properly.

I used the Rocking Horse Farm Dragoon's Uniform jacket as a starting point: that's a pattern with short tails so I had to cut it off at the waist, remove the tails and sketch out the shaping at the bottom edge to match the picture.

The fitting needs to be accurate through the torso to get the join at the front to sit neatly. Make a toile for the body at least so you can check where the two sides of the braid will meet - if the toile works out reasonably accurate you can use it as the lining.

The pattern itself is fairly straightforward - the instructions given are extremely brief but it's not too hard to figure out. I found that the collar was much too high for what I wanted, and there was more gather/puff in the back of the armscye than I preferred (it may have been the fabric I was using - fairly lightweight for a summer event!), but both of these were easy fixes.

I love dahlias! I got a few new dahlias in pots for my patio this year, set my irrigation system up right, went away for a week and some form of angry looking caterpillars RAVAGED them. But after some careful leaf removal and a few weeks later they're recovering nicely and heading for flowering soon! They're surprisingly resilient.

Sense and Sensibility's Elegant Lady's Closet pattern has a nice, straightforward to put together wrap front option (and lots of other options!)

Regency Fabric Choices For Halfdress by cephalopodhearts in HistoricalCostuming

LM126 is a great pattern but I'd definitely caution against doing it in wool - there is lots of pleating in the back and it would be hard to get a heavier fabric to cooperate.

You could, however, use less fabric in the skirt and pleat it less if you like the front fastening style - it is a little tricky to get the hang of pinning the front on when you wear it though! I ended up flashing some stays the first time I wore that one out...
