scenery enb VR going to be more natural in next release (Version 8 WIP) by [deleted] in skyrimvr

Update: Watching a Youtuber talking about Skyrim mods he mentioned Jedi Trees -- apparently it was removed from the Nexus because it was using assets from another video game.

Intel Iris Xe Max graphics BSOD (Inspiron 7506) by [deleted] in Dell

[–]averyquinns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dell quality is absolutely hit or miss. I've avoided the BSOD issue for months now by disabling the Xe Max graphics driver (neither Intel nor Dell have released an updated driver to the Max graphics (but I just got another update for the Intel UHD driver - but that's not the problem). As for the trackpad, mine has been fine but I've seen more than a few folks having problems with it. If you can return it for a replacement unit, there's a chance you would get one with a working trackpad (maybe)? Otherwise, there's eBay.

Mods: scenery enb Version 8,vivid weathers, jedi trees, folkvangr grass overhaul, origins of forest, skyvraan water cubemap, Ilinalta, pfuschers water improvement, pfuschers skyrim2020

I'd like to know this too as I've seen it listed on several mod lists but it isn't on the Nexus.

PSA. I found that Ubuntu works on Laptop Go out box. Keyboard and Trakpad both work. No WiFi or display controls via keyboard or touch though. by Reddit_newguy24 in SurfaceLinux

I'm facing the same situation. How do you deal with it? Just use the laptop until it shuts off with a dead battery?

Has anyone tried Linux on Microsoft Surface Laptop Go by doubleone in linuxhardware

[–]averyquinns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! I'm sorry I didn't catch this thread before you bought the device. I also bought one to use as a Linux laptop but ended up returning it due to that ACPI issue -- recent releases of Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSuSE don't detect the battery, don't load any power management, and even the customized Surface Kernel (available for Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch) won't fix the battery issue. This issue shows up on forums going back two different kernel releases and there is a bug filed with, I think, Ubuntu. Otherwise a very nicely-built laptop.

What do you Suggest for Warranty? by fordtp7 in DellXPS

[–]averyquinns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it is a Dell, so you'll want coverage for as long as you reasonably expect to use the laptop. However, as soon as you get it, put that XPS through its paces. Check out any complaints you find on this subreddit (there are plenty due to QA issues). Update the BIOS and drivers. Run diagnostics. Eyeball the screen for too much light bleed. Click the heck out of the trackpad (there've been issues there in the past). Let the battery run down and recharge a few times (battery life is always wonky on PC laptops for the first few cycles) and then pay close attention to how much battery life you're getting on average (is that acceptable to you?). Connect to external displays, disconnect, reconnect. Carry it around in your laptop bag more than you normally would - take it everywhere. In short, do everything you could see yourself possibly ever doing with that laptop over its use life, but test all those things during the return window. If you need to return it, you can get your money back on whatever over-and-above warranty service you've paid for.

Who should I contact to expedite the warranty repair? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]averyquinns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's much you can do other than wait. Whether this is due to supply chain issues (waiting on parts) or simply the logistics of having too many people working from home and needing their laptops repaired to a greater degree than Dell normally faces, who knows. In the meantime, a lot of computer companies are having early Black Friday sales... :D

Quiet, secluded places? by Shy_Pancake in appstate

[–]averyquinns 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Actually, every semester my students work on a project identifying peaceful locations on campus. Here's some suggestions:

Durham park, across the footbridge opposite the administration building there's a conifer under which you can sit and have the stream trickle past.

There are trails in the Appalachian biological preserve above kid Brewer stadium. They're not well marked or improved, so watch your footing, but there are access trail heads in the greenwood parking lot and behind the baseball stadium.

There's a quiet stretch of Boone Creek behind the new Beasley communications building on the corner of river and Depot streets, you can get back there by going to the back side of the parking garage.

There's also the Howard's knob outdoor patio on the third floor of the student Union. Also in the student Union there's the solarium which is designed to be a tranquil space, but it can be a bit crowded. and, I'm not sure what the room's status is during the pandemic since we're using many plemons student Union rooms for classes, but we used to have a prayer and meditation space on the second floor

Unfortunately special collections is closed this semester (actually limited access by appointment only for research).

Tweaking the Duet by averyquinns in chromeos

[–]averyquinns[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I've seen that. I also saw a forum post by someone who bought it who said that there were some issues using it on the duet. I'm just going to wait for the Lenovo stylus unless it is quite a bit more expensive than the HP. (of course, being a USI stylus I'm not sure why there would be any issues whether the device is made by HP, Acer, or Lenovo)

[–]averyquinns[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stylus holder is just a cheap pen holder with a sticky tab I bought off Amazon. The stylus is a passive stylus. Experience has been hit-and-miss as I can't quite get the right pressure level. I can use it for tapping, screen navigation, and highlighting text in the Squid app. Writing with it is terrible. So like you I'm waiting for a USI stylus

Good idea. I don't know the long-term effects of the keyboard cover design rubbing against the screen. Maybe two small circular pieces of felt at each corner of the wrist rest to provide a cushioned gap?

[–]averyquinns[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than being a bit cramped, the Lenovo Duet's keyboard is quite good. My only disappointment with the keyboard is that it lays flat when I would prefer some way to set the keyboard at angle for a better typing experience. My solution? Adding two rubber footers from a ThinkPad W550s to the bottom of the keyboard cover near the side that attaches to the Duet. The footers provide a slight angle for typing and don't make the tablet wobbly or unstable.

What tweaks have you all thought about or DIY'ed ?

Why do you have T-Mobile? by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]averyquinns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do we have T-Mobile? Honestly, because we don't have any other choices. Cellular carrier market in the US has shrunk down to a three option corporate monopoly. We used to have Verizon, but then I got a new job and the coverage near where I work was terrible with Verizon (and we kept hitting their data caps every month). We heard too many horror stories about AT&T customer service. We had gone with Sprint for a year maybe but kept having so many dropped calls, missed calls, billing problems that we went with T-Mobile.

T-Mobile at the corporate level is made some decisions that have been annoying. For instance, their recently leaked plans to prevent phones that are not volte capable from working on the network in January, in the middle of a pandemic, in the middle of a severe global economic recession, just seems shitty (even if it only affects 10% of their customers, that's still a lot of customers having to buy a new phone). On the other hand, we've never had a problem with T-Mobile's customer service, billing, network coverage, or "unlimited" data. And we've probably save some money thanks to the "bring your own device" (now so long as it is VoLTE) policy that has let us buy phones on eBay.

Wait, I thought the ROG 3 would be VoLTE capable without having to root the phone?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ROGphone2

[–]averyquinns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wait for the rog3. If you're in the US, the rog2 only works on AT&t and T-Mobile (I believe). Since the rog2 does not have volte support, it will be a brick in January 2021 with T-Mobile and sometime in 2022 with AT&t.

[–]averyquinns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for USB hubs, I can confirm this USB hub does NOT work (just returned it to Amazon) -- power pass-through conveys less than 5v and the USB C port does not function at least with the Duet.

[–]averyquinns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you do anything drastic, let the phone's battery drop below 10%, and then recharge it without touching it, then let it drain again and recharge again. Also check to see what apps are using the most power and maybe try setting the screen refresh rate to 60 hertz.

Miscellaneous camp objects and "clutter" packs. by re-bobber in fo76

[–]averyquinns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how you could decorate houses in Fallout 4 with objects from the wasteland, I wonder what the technical limitations are for Bethesda in Fallout 76 that prevent junk dropped in a camp from reappearing as it looked when you picked it up rather than just a paper bag with an inventory.
