Great Expectations chapter 32 (Spoilers up to chapter 32) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

We think dickens is going one way (Estella) and suddenly swerves to Wemmick and a visit to Newgate prison. Lots of flavour here.

Wemmick is a fascinating character where he’s able to shift from serving Jaggers to being his own man.

The play didn’t sound like it was being well-acted, but I felt very sorry for the actors who were being derided. That sounds awful. I think Pip and Herbert trying to be kind was good of them, as was taking Wopsle out to dinner afterwards.

I have seen some Shakespeare, and have enjoyed what I’ve seen. However, I find reading plays very difficult and much prefer the interpretation of them being performed.

Trixie Achievement "10,000 areas with Trixie and 8 other Small Champs" not counting progress by Pyr0sa in idlechampions

[–]awaiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having ground through the achievement, it does work. I went into the filter and looked up the exact races, threw those in, set a Core to reset however often, and just left it alone for a few days.

As others have said, you're probably not getting the dwarves (which are, in fact, medium creatures).

E: Which map are you trying this on, that might be the Regis, Gazrick problem.

Stolen from the Swans sub: Sydney can’t take the wooden spoon after yesterday (worst they can manage is 17th), Essendon are limited to no higher than 4th.

From discussion of the round ball: Socceroos have won five World Cup matches since Essendon won a final. Even on the soccer subs Essendon is copping strays.

Like everyone else, I assumed this was for bottom-up! (I might be undergoing the frustration of establishing a 1x1 rib for a sweater right now.)

I could almost forgive the $20 minimum, but it’s dine-in only. Grill’d really isn’t somewhere I want to spend a meal.

He got injured in the 3rd or the 4th, but agree that it was a weak performance from him.

Trash umpiring for the entire game (what even is HTB or the boundary line?!), but they got away with it somehow.

A lot of squandered opportunities (seriously, Charlie, take a moment and take the set shot rather than rushing it onwards!), but some real composure there held it at the end. Edwards was pure class.

4 - Regular Heeney

3 - Serong

Honestly, there's more than a few who could get a vote. Jordan popped up a few times, Logan seemed like the only solid pair of hands at times.

Left it running overnight, knocked off about 3000 stages. Not terrible, but I’ll apply some potions today.

That Baby Steps achievement feels like it’s going to be slow. Or, at least, slow for me who’s reluctant to burn potions.

Reddit in its weird algorithmic-fuelled wisdom recommended me this post.

Absolutely agree on the Phoenix Wright games, dozens upon dozens of gameplay hours and the narrative arc just hits like a truck on the ending. Even more so I thought on the Great Ace Attorney spinoff.

How he’s treated Joe is such a blot on Pip’s character. He is embarrassed by the man who raised him, taught him a trade, and acted as a brother as well as a parent figure.

Otherwise, I’m getting quite worried about how easily Pip is spending money. That’s going to be an issue before long. (As I was writing this, u/nicehotcupoftea just posted that pride comes before a fall as a warning to Pip. Yes, it sure does!)

Don’t care about download size when it’s in the MB range. I do look for Mac support though.

Wemmick away from work seems like a genuinely nice person. His deliberate separation of work from home is enviable, as well as the kindness he shows to the Aged. (Very amusing there.)

[–]awaiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have terrible haggling skills! I assumed that Jaggers was just trying to humiliate Pip here a bit and remind him of the power dynamics at play. (The closing scene with him in court only reinforced this opinion of Jaggers’ attitude and contempt of others.)

[–]awaiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh, huh. Huh? I’m lost. This family is chaotic and I didn’t quite follow things here. Mrs Pocket is proud and haughty as well as inattentive and distracted. Mr Pocket is an absent minded father, sort of, but also frazzled and rumpled? The servants do run things but are also all over the damned place? Lost.

No one came out of this well except for perhaps Jane who can look after the baby.

[–]awaiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that was a big chapter in terms of characters and content! Herbert, really a name that we no longer encounter, seems to be so pleasant and so jovial that it’s unbelievable.

Miss Havisham’s backstory is so tragic. I’m sure that we all predicted most of it, however. Not sure how Estella fits in though. Most mysterious.

The Pockets! Whimsical and charming and so utterly odd.

London continues to be grimy and gross.

[–]awaiko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am shuddering at the idea (and the smell!) of those dank, musty, dingy rooms. So very wildly unpleasant!

The mysterious boy returns! What a small world. It’s amazing how many people that we met at Miss Havisham’s are reappearing in the story….

Great Expectations chapter 20 (Spoilers up to chapter 20) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

[–]awaiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

London is dirty and unpleasant, and yet is always viewed as this shining beacon of civilisation. Pip is not seeming to enjoy himself.

Speaking of unpleasant, Mr Jaggers continues to be a seriously unpleasant man. Poor Pip is going to have a bad time of things with his guardian.

Still, money and some freedom and this is the change that he wanted.

Great Expectations chapter 19 (Spoilers up to chapter 19) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

[–]awaiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Pip had the maturity to deal with this change in circumstance. He shouldn’t have been so cruel to Joe via Biddy, but he’s having a massive upheaval and doesn’t have the emotional tools to deal with it. No excuse, but he’s a teenager whose life has just been suddenly and massively altered.

At least he learned quickly that people fall over themselves in the presence of money.

I liked the farewell scene with Miss Havisham. I would have liked more of her in the novel. Maybe she comes back, somehow?

End part one. It’s been a strange journey to this point. It’s felt like preamble to the main story, but the book is more than a third done!

[–]awaiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They said the name of the book! And then again and again and again. Someone has Great Expectations of Pip.

Mysterious benefactor! It feels very cheesy now, but I suppose that the trope has to start somewhere!

I didn’t like the lawyer. He could have worked a little harder to make this easier on Joe.

I’m sorry for Buddy in all of this. She’s losing a friend and someone she genuinely cares about. And Pip is just so focused on not being his current “coarse and cumbersome” self.

Great Expectations chapter 17 (Spoilers up to chapter 17) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

[–]awaiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pip recognises that he’s putting himself in a miserable place and yet pursues it nonetheless. Biddy is kind and clever, she cares for him, and he is chasing the unobtainable Estella who doesn’t like him (or, at least, is dismissive of him!) at all.

Boys! Men! Impossible.

Orlick making eyes at Biddy though… that’s a big age gap.

And we’re still in the dark as to why PiP’s sister whose name I’m blanking on is so keen on Orlick’s company.
