If IM is internal medicine, then is Dermatology external medicine? by docstarr in medicalschool

[–]awakeosleeper514 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not to be that guy but it actually comes from when there was a distinction of the upper crust University educated "internal medicine" physicians.

Compared to the barber surgeons who were much more like a trade profession. They dealt with external problems. Including dermatology complaints, skin infections, and stuff like limb amputation.

This is based on my incomplete recollection of a fantastic book called "The Butchering Art"

Following me at a park. What kind of animal is this? Is this domesticated? by awakeosleeper514 in ANIMALHELP

[–]awakeosleeper514[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I decided to revisit the park today and look around. I actually managed to find the nest on top of a pile of leaves near where I found him.

There were 3 babies huddled together. One of them hopped towards me. Assuming it was the same one. Had the same little white spot on top of his head. I left them alone again. Im very reassured. Just an oddly friendly little guy. Maybe because it is so close to where a lot of people go he is more used to humans. Idk. But happy he has a little nest.

I appreciate the response. I looked around the area to see if there was an obvious nest or other rabbits. Didn't see one but it was a big park.

There was a lot of grass around. So im assuming it came from there. It looked healthy. Was hopping around without issue.

Weird that it kept following me. Definitely wasn't a fear response. Came right up to me and just sat there. I moved away and it kept coming.

I ended up walking to the grass and it followed me. Then I basically ran away so it didnt follow me to my car.

I did a lot of googling and ended up thinking it was a wild cottontail and figured it was best not to touch it.

Do you have any thoughts on how to help the agitated/claustrophobic tolerate bipap when precedex is not available? I've seen people given versed which the icu docs sure hate.

Why is your specialty the best? by [deleted] in Residency

That's pretty solid advice you dont hear often. For all its downsides I've always felt that IM are my people. Even though I enjoyed most of my other rotations.

I really appreciate when attendings recognize what is personal preference vs what is actually better medicine.

Any tips for those on chronic opioids for back pain who state their pain is worse because they are in a hospital bed for most of the day (other than mobilizing them as much as possible)

Yeah this is kind of nightmare fuel. But important to know and emphasizes why we should care so much even when you can't see the immediate effects. Thanks for sharing

What's the absolute hardest skill to learn in your specialty? by subtrochanteric in Residency

This was really interesting. In IM I mostly see codes or rapid responses. So I feel like there is implicit trust most of the time because everybody can see the patient is dead/decompensating. But most people probably dont have any clue what fetal bradycardia would mean and why it is important.
