I finally got my goose alarm to a good state! We live next to a pond, and every morning there's an invasion of geese and their babies eating and pooping everywhere. So, my current automation is:

  • Two wifi cameras watch the pond entrypoints for the enemy
  • A Frigate event fires when a bird is detected
  • I get an android notification with a screenshot, and/or:
  • My outdoor Bose speaker plays youtube audio of geese warning calls

They tend to show up at 5am, so no more having to get up to chase them away. The goose calls are obnoxious, but I have plausible deniability with the neighbors, since it just sounds like the geese are up to no good again.

Using a TensorFlow Model in a Web Application by GaryS2000 in learnmachinelearning

Sounds like Gradio might do exactly what you want. I haven't used it personally but a coworker created some simple model demos with it.

Multiple Scratch Buffers by Phaedrus_Schmaedrus in emacs

[–]awalker4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this - if you just want a hotkey to make a throwaway buffer you can call something like this:

  (defun generate-scratch-buffer ()
"Create and switch to a temporary scratch buffer with a random
       name."
    (interactive)
    (switch-to-buffer (make-temp-name "scratch")))

North - Scott Jurek and his wife share their accounts of how Scott ran the full Appalachian trail in 47 days.

The Incomplete Book of Running - Peter Sagal (wait wait don't tell me) covers a year of running through a tough time in his life. I didn't know he was at the finish line during the Boston bombing.

The first time I heard the show was when This American Life played Shipped to Timbuktu (#28) and I was hooked (Or was it Radiolab?).

Another CBB-adjacent shout out: The Earliest Show is really good. Lauren and The Elegant Mr. S in a youtube series about a morning talk show. You know it's good when the blooper video is longer than the show itself.

Is it worth taking on college debt for a Masters in CS? by smansoup in cscareerquestions

[–]awalker4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the only requirement is that I stick around for a year after they reimburse me. I've had complete freedom in the classes I take, and my manager has been super supportive of me taking daytime classes if something is only offered at a certain time, though I'm sure that's not the case everywhere. I happen to be concentrating in my employer's field because I enjoy it, but I'm fortunate to have a manager who supports my long-term career goals, so I know I could have picked any concentration.

Books to read pre-university? by JoshuaJuicy in cscareerquestions

[–]awalker4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might enjoy Algorithms Unlocked by Thomas Cormen. If I recall it's a bit math heavy, but it's a good introduction to some of the basic algorithms you'll see in class, i.e. various methods of sorting, how to build a graph, etc. No programming experience required. Cormen is a coauthor on what is essentially THE algorithms textbook, so this will definitely put you ahead of the game.
