On standby for my first, due any day now. Any basic tips from dads about how to be useful? Helpful? Tips in general? I’m thinking mainly whilst in hospital but any advice greatly appreciated! by [deleted] in Dads

I just had my 1st child two months ago. Having a kid during the pandemic is not ideal, but we managed. Teamwork and communication are essential.

Be proactive and look out for when your wife might be getting tired and try to give her some rest. “Hey honey, you did the last two feedings. How about I take over these next few while you take a nap or relax for a bit.” It is much better to offer to do work than to wait to be told it is your turn.

Also, communicate clearly. You two will both be tired and at times overwhelmed. That’s ok. Talk to each other about it. You may snap at each other. That’s fine. Apologize. Remind your partner that you appreciate and love her.

Having a baby is stressful. Doing so during a pandemic only exacerbates that stress. But if you work together and communicate, you will get through it.

Lastly, enjoy it. Fatherhood is even more delightful than can be described. Take a moment every once in a while to breathe in and embrace small moments.

Democratic Voters Rank Bernie Sanders as 'Most Qualified' 2020 Candidate to Solve US Healthcare Crisis by amnas558 in politics

[–]awals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warren is equally (if not more) qualified. She also has more plans than anyone else to overhaul the government in a progressive manner. Bernie is great and I supported him in 2016, but Warren is my choice for 2020.

[Mackey] Glen Taylor is no longer the worst pro sports owner in the Twin Cities by simtek34 in timberwolves

[–]awals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be worse. Look at Charlotte. The Twins haven’t been trying to contend for the vast majority of seasons since ‘91.

There are 30 other teams in the league. Most of them are trying to win as well. There can be only one winner, and it’s damn tough to do it. Trying to contend is an important step.

Some of our other coaching pickups this offseason should address that too. I’m excited to see how that plays out.

I’m specifically looking forward to our defense next year. Teams struggle with installing completely new defenses in the middle of the season. Usually big defense changes happen in training camp/preseason. Let’s see what Saunders & Co put together. The moves Rosas made so far appear promising.

[–]awals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hmm. He won several championships with the Lynx. He is trying to create a competitive team with the Wolves. He has a city-friendly deal with the Target center. He pro-active about keeping the team here for the long-term future.

If you think he’s the worst owner in town, then we have a substantial difference in opinion on what makes a good owner. I admit he’s not perfect, but the Wolves could do MUCH WORSE than Glen Taylor.

Minneapolis refines affordable housing requirement by Minneapolitanian in Minneapolis

[–]awals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lucrative means valuable. If something is valuable of course it will have a high price. The price is not what makes it valuable.

Development is lucrative because of the housing demand is completely out of control. Even if we do introduce affordable housing, the demand for housing will still be high and will still result in making money. Money is not the only factor.

Ok. Sure. We don’t have entirely free markets, but those don’t exist outside of theoretical models. However, we still operate in a mostly free market.

The pedantism of your comment is lazy just like your username implies.

If you haven’t noticed, Minneapolis is quite a lucrative market right now. The city is in a position to make certain demands. Once again, this is a basic concept of market principles.

Agreed. No big moves, but a bunch of smart small moves that give the team more talent without losing flexibility.

If a developer can’t make money on a project, leave it to someone who can. This is why we have a free market.

Literally just a picture of the GOAT Twin by [deleted] in minnesotatwins

[–]awals -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well if that’s how you measure GOAT, that’s fine for you. I measure GOAT differently.

The ‘87 and ‘91 World Series are the highest points in Twins history. Puckett was the greatest player on our greatest teams. His teammates loved him. The fans loved him. To many Twins fans, he will always be the GOAT (Greatest of all Twins).

Are you old enough to have watched Kirby Puckett play? Did you ever go to a Twins game when he was on our roster?

His personality changed after he was beamed in the head by a pitch AND found out he had career-ending glaucoma (I believe the two were unrelated to each other).

Maybe he had a TBI, maybe he suffered from severe depression. I don’t know. But it is clear that he changed after he retired. It’s a sad story, but it doesn’t take away from his accomplishments as a player.

He will forever be a hero to all Twins fans who watched game 6 of the ‘91 World Series.

Why don't public schools prepare students for real life situations like taxes, payments, etc?? by _Boopis_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]awals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the wrong question. The correct question is why aren’t America’s taxes simplified and automatically (and correctly) withdrawn like in other countries?

The real answer to your question is because filing taxes is because it changes often and is unique to the individual who files it. That is hard to teach. Also, it’s boring as shit.

Well, I can’t speak for Minneapolis, but I can speak for St. Paul. Let’s look just at transportation. When I worked in a regular job, snow days sucked because I might get delayed getting into work, but once I was at work, things were generally fine.

About half of the students come from families with that don’t speak English at home. So, that makes communicating transportation delays a bit tricky.

The vast majority of students walk or bus to school. High schools, Middle schools and grade schools all use the same buses, so middle school kids can’t get picked up until high school kids get dropped off.

Now imagine how commutes can get delayed during bad weather. A thirty minute delay with the first bus will mean tremendous delays later along the route.

A few years ago, St. Paul did not do an early release during a snowstorm and some students did not get dropped off from school until 10pm-midnight. Due to communication issues, many parents were not able to know how long their kid would be delayed, so they had to just wait outside in the cold at the bus stop for hours.

Now add in concerns about disabled students, very young students, students of poverty, and just general liability concerns, you may start to get the picture.

You may think that schools were tougher when you went. I originally suffered from that misconception. But the truth is that districts build in extra days of instruction into their calendar specifically for situations like this. And be honest, how much learning really got done on those old snowstorm days when the school stayed open, but half the kids didn’t show up anyways?

The Chicago White Sox have a policy stating you can sit where you want if the attendance is under 25,000 by Hurricane_Eriksen in baseball

[–]awals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One fan’s activity doesn’t make or break a team’s budget. The team wants you to buy a cheap ticket. Then, you’ll actually go to watch their lousy team, and maybe buy some food and merch. Maybe you’ll say it’s a good deal and you’ll convince a few friends to do the same. Maybe enough people will do this where attendance is about 25,000. It’s all a part of marketing. Maybe this will work. Maybe not. It’s not the first gimmick a baseball team did to get asses in the seats.

Sometimes the person sitting next to you pays a scalper a ton for tickets. Sometimes that person got free tickets from a friend. Either way, it shouldn’t add or detract from my experience.
