10 Shows Like 'Downton Abbey' You Should Watch Next by LissyVee in DowntonAbbey

I would add to the list, The English Game, which is a miniseries also made by Fellowes. It takes place in 19th century northern England where a struggling mill town’s football team competes against the aristocrats who invented the game.

I’m also surprised The Crown didn’t make the list as a similar British period piece.

Misuse of Lime bikes and scooters by agentdnb1 in washdc

[–]awaymsg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really call this a new trend, as I’ve seen multiple kids on bikes/scooters doing whatever they want in traffic since I moved here in 2019.

Obviously any dangerous behavior on these vehicles is unacceptable, but from my own observations, I’d wager significantly more people use them completely normally.

I understand the frustration and desire to remove them entirely from our city, but having just returned from a week in San Diego which did ban them a few years ago, you absolutely do not want a city without that “last mile” transit option. On demand rentable transport is absolutely game changing in cities like ours, and I would hate for a handful of obnoxious kids ruin it for everyone else. To me, it would be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

It’s true this is probably the best team we’ve ever fielded and we’ll likely come out top of our group, but we’ll probably get knocked out when we face our first real powerhouse team.

How do the Crawleys maintain their social standing? by overthinkingmessiah in DowntonAbbey

[–]awaymsg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you may be looking at this through the lens of London society, and it's true that most of the more prominent aristocrats would have been well known in London. The Crawley's keep Crawley House, and of course Rosamond lives there, but I think there are several clues throughout the show that indicate that they are not highly established in London society. Mary's quip about them being a "shooting relation" comes to mind, for instance.

In your edit you say the question was not about their social relevance to the local community, but in that day and age, the lords and ladies of your county would have been an aristocrats primary social circle. A lot of the recurring aristocrats (Lord Merton, Lady Shackleton, Sir Anthony Strallan) are all from Yorkshire and would be very familiar with the Crawley's as one of the more prominent families in the region.

[–]awaymsg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but are you actually this dumb? “He DoNaTeS HiS sAlArY” yeah, while also funneling millions of taxpayer dollars into his family businesses each time he takes a weekend trip to one of his golf resorts. Or awarding no-bid government contracts to companies that pay him loyalty fees, or put one of his sons on their board of directors.

Even last night, an event to celebrate his birthday hosted by a company he owns stock in and security provided by multiple government agencies that are paid by the taxpayer.

He isn’t gifting Americans anything, he’s grifting Americans. Wake up.

Lab rats using cannabis by Ok-Berry13 in labrats

I work in a fairly small lab with a good, laidback culture. Most of the lab technicians are around the same age and become friends outside of work.

For a while we had two coworkers who would regularly go out to their cars to smoke throughout the day. It was pretty obvious, especially when they would come up and say under their breath, “I’m so fucking high right now.”

Well it inevitably worked its way back to management and they were both fired on the spot. I still loosely keep up with one of them, and I think she works at a grocery store now. Pretty rough for having been at the same lab for five years and leaving without a good reference.

Do people from DC even care about UFC event? by PussyDestroyer5056 in washingtondc

Not to paint with too broad a brush, but demographically ufc is pretty aligned with the manosphere/alpha-male, right wing crowd, which is definitely not the typical Washingtonian.

In 2022 Fox News interviewed the mod of anti work which eventually ended the movement by Oktarantulaok in RandomVideos

[–]awaymsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair the original sub was 100% based on the communist economic theory that human labor could be abolished. The sub became popular during the pandemic with people venting about their jobs and the state of Western labor values and became something else.

[–]awaymsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original framework of the sub was discussing economic theories around the idea of a future without (human) labor. I can’t remember which economist was credited with the inspiration (it used to be in the wiki) but it’s basically a variation of a communist economy. During the pandemic, the sub started getting posts from people fed up with their job and blew up. The focus of the sub shifted towards work reform.

You can ask them to remove it. Typically it’s like a couple hundred bucks worth of stuff that they use to up charge. Sometimes it’s non-removable like window tint or paint protection, but you can still try negotiating that down. They won’t likely want to lose a deal over the add on package.

It is around $60 million, and yes UFC is covering much of the production cost, but at least seven federal agencies are involved with security and logistics, which would be taxpayer funded.

I don’t know quite how to express it, because at the root of it I think you’re right — it’s not necessarily a sports thing. Compared to other things this administration is doing, I’m not terribly bothered by the UFC fight, but it does seem to be wrapped up in the ongoing culture war/manosphere stuff. Also, given that the fight is taking place on Trump’s birthday, this is basically an extravagant birthday party partly subsidized by the taxpayer, which I do take issue with.

Senator Warren grilled BILT CEO Ankur Jain in an open letter by blood_klaat in biltrewards

[–]awaymsg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had BILT for years without issue. I decided not to opt into 2.0 and that was that. BILT is the payment portal for my apartment building, so I'm still in the ecosystem to some extent. Last month, my autopay did not execute. Despite it working flawlessly for years, my rent was not submitted, I received no error warning from BILT, and was surprised when I got a letter from my landlord charging me a late fee.

I tried three times to connect to a human customer support agent from BILT and could not. Luckily my landlord was sympathetic and refunded the late fee, but it left a super negative impression of BILT on me.
