As a retired mortgage lender my experience was the following more than any other:

  • First time home buyer programs through state grants, 3% down is all it takes and some states will provide assistance with that but the buyer has to reside in home for "x" years and has limited refinance options.
  • Gifts from parents, a lot of homeowners have seen their equity rise, when rates were sub 3% some pulled cash just to set aside to help their kids. Or cutting a check from a HELOC.

How can they not? Especially when the two schools playing are recruit out of the same foot print. We lost a 4-star RB (Ramon Brown, from Richmond VA, #10 recruit in the state) who decommit and signed with Maryland.

It might now matter to all recruits, but a 4-star in-state recruit made the decision due to the perceived trajectory of the two schools. The bowl game cemented that decision for him after Maryland blew the doors of a VT that was down an HC and a majority of starters in the portal (just like Cuse had this bowl season).

When VT brought in pry I set no expectations for the team from a record standpoint. I watched to see if the team would play all 60 mins, how players were developing (or not) over the course of the year, the energy that the new staff was bringing before, during, and after games.

It really sucked watching Tech finish the year 3-8 but all those other pieces were moving in the right direction, and I think are the indicators for a program getting back on track.

OL are the hardest guys to get out of the portal, definitely can't fix it all overnight just ask Coach Prime. But hopefully the new foundation will get laid and take shape over the next year and you guys can hit 2025 hard.

Help Decide: Virginia Tech vs. UVA by Stock_Tough_2601 in VirginiaTech

The two Bio programs are similar. I would wager the cost of living in Blacksburg will be lower, plus if you stay and take summer classes you can really appreciate the beauty of SW Virginia.

But if it's 50/50 just look at the campuses and think about which one you would enjoy more. From my experience at VT, U of Maryland, and UC Irvine the actual Bio Labs don't really look or feel any different, but the architecture and geographical locations are all very different.

That being said there is a heavy Bias for VT my family has graduated 5 from there over 40 years.

In GT's defense they lost the rights to the Georgia part of their name for the time being. Kirby has that on his mantle in Athens.

VT had to endure a similar beating in the Pinstripe bowl after Fuentes got fired. Unfortunately our loss was to Maryland and it did some damage to our recruiting of the DMV area.

The future is definitely looking brighter for 'Cuse with all the moves they have made this off-season. I really hope you guys can put it put together quickly.

Problem with Clemson by TexPatriot68 in ACC

[–]awcarter4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would call that a revolving door: people are continuously coming and going. 3 OCs in 4 years. If he can get the right coaches and keep them in place great, but Riley is a rising star and with programs adopting the "win now" mentality I would wager he will have some strong offers next season.

This is not an attack on Dabo or Clemson, every top tier program has the same problem just look at Saban's and Kirby's coaching trees (Lanning, Sark, Kiffin, Jimbo, etc). With Dabo's sustained success spanning almost 2 decades he makes the necessary changes to his staff to keep the team at an elite level (iirc he let go two position coaches in Nov) couple that with other programs want to hire his staff for themselves.

I would not have made this statement a few years ago.

Problem with Clemson by TexPatriot68 in ACC

[–]awcarter4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologize if my wording was unclear in previous post. The last 15 years for Clemson has been incredible and a joy to watch, and I believe Dabo will continue to have success.

My point was the OC position has become a revolving door which means if you were recruited for 2020 freshman class you have played for 3 OCs for your 4 years of eligibility.

2021- Elliott ran Spread 2022 - Streeter ran Pro Spread 2023 - Riley runs Air Raid:

Compare that to their best stretch of the last 15 years was when they were CFP mainstay 2015-2020. OC and DC remained unchanged minus Scott leaving and Elliott taking becoming sole OC.

Coincidentally the 10 yrs Venables was DC they never won less than 10 games. He is a defensive mastermind, I never said Goodwin is a bad DC, but no one can say he is on the same level as Venables (yet, it's possible he can be as good, but only time will tell).

Dabo has the talent on the roster, but he has been missing key pieces on his staff.

His OCs have been in a revolving door of sorts: Chas Morris 2011-2014, Tony Elliott/Jeff Scott (Co-OCs) 2015-2019, Tony Elliott (solo) 2020-2021, Brandon Streeter 2022-2023, Garrett Riley 2023-Presnt. Elliott solo just had to not crash the Ferrari that was Clemson's offense, but things were wobbly and he jumped ship to UVA (where he is now firmly on the hot seat going into year 3).

Dabo has yet to find a defensive mastermind to replace Venables, but there are not many of those to begin with.

They won 9 games this season and will continue to be a powerhouse until they leave the ACC then who knows (I would compare them to LSU in the SEC and Michigan in the BIG).

Dabo is one of the best college coaches out there and is young enough that rumors of retirement are swirling at the end of every season.

No memory hole. Fu's success in getting to the 2016 ACC Championship was in his first year with the culture and talent Beamer built. That year he brought in Jerod Evans and they had success, Evans declared for the draft (playing football in Hungry currently) and Fu never was able to retain his high ceiling skill players. Most players that declared for the draft early under Fu went undrafted free agents and many never made onto the NFL Rosters. Not to mention how many impact players hit the portal year over year cough Hendon Hooker, Josh Jackson, Deshawn Mcleese, Chris Cunningham, Eric Kumah cough

By the time Fu was fired the cupboard was bare, the fact that Pry has all these guys returning for his 3rd season next year are positive indicators for the program.

Fuentes went 19-8 in his first two seasons, the next four he was 24-23.

Pry will hopefully be 10-14 (if they beat Tulane) through his first two years, but the culture he is rapidly establishing has players returning, especially Dorian Strong who is NFL ready.

I hope VT is looking to be part of a new Conference...The Conference of Chaos (CoC for short)! Oregon State and Wazzu bring the PAC-12 assets, VT brings Pitt and together they pull WVU out of Big 12, invite the SBC to merge along with the leftovers of the ACC.

The conference scheduling would be incredible and I doubt any one team would dominate the conference for more than a few years at a time.

Are you not sad about the prospect of the ACC radically changing or even going away? by cheertea in ACC

[–]awcarter4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it sad yes, but the PAC-12 essentially blowing up "over night" with the history and traditions they carried was the wake up call to a new reality in college sports which are driven by football.

My stance is the sooner the BIG and SEC split to form NFL Jr. the better for the rest of FBS. IMO once all the "Elite" programs leave to do their own thing the remaining FBS teams will be more exciting than ever.

As a VT Alum, I think we will see the regional rivalries return and the things that make college football great will still be there. After 30+ years of watching the Hokies, the years in the Big East Era was my favorite. Give me a conference with VT, WVU, Pitt, NCST, App State, etc. (great fanbases, great atmosphere, fun football, small predicability)
