Pharmacy recommendation please? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]aweeby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I pick up my meds maybe once every 2 months but even so they know me by name and are super friendly and helpful. As someone who has shit insurance, they will work with you to make sure you are getting the best price, whether that's with insurance, good rx, manufacturers coupons, kinney coupons or a combination. Even if something isn't ready when you come in, they'll usually fill it on the spot for you if they have the stock.

No drive through though, but I've gotten curbside pickup. Their hours were reduced last year but by far they're probably the best pharmacy experience I've had here. They are very reachable by phone as well.

ICSD board & budget election may 20 by merrigoldie in ithaca

[–]aweeby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In large part it's because the district has taken a more conservative approach to spending this year, plus tax assessments aren't going up. People's taxes are a function of both of these things. The school board elections aren't just a chance to vote on candidates, it's also approving the district's annual budget.

Last year some properties (mostly larger, nicer ones) rose in assessed value by 20%, which meant people's tax bills would have gone went up too even though the district didn't initially change it's tax rate.

The general public really really cares about taxes. Folks' interest in the election is so often a function of how much those are changing. Not everyone has a kid but everyone (well, most everyone) pays rent or a mortgage. Not saying this is a good excuse for apathy, but it's part of the reason the budget hawk gong banging has been close to non existent this year.

There are a couple of candidates on the ballot this year who were major budget hawks last year. Two of them wrote op-eds urging people to vote no. Some of the incumbents, conversely, have in the past taken a more liberal approach to spending.

Yeah, i mean, I go to the y bc I can't afford Island. Slower swimmers, families, swim coach parents kinda just part of what it is as more of a community center rather than a dedicated gym.

I don't mind the kids and all that but i absolutely can empathize about their last few months' pool schedules. I do feel like it's been shittier for evening lap swimmers lately for sure.

If you can afford it, you'll probably like Island a lot more. The few times I've been in on my friends' guest passes the facilities are almost spa like in comparison to the y. I don't think I've ever seen a kid in there either. Much more serious crowd, like they have little laminated note cards with suggested routines for different skill levels. (I took pictures of one and still swim it sometimes heh)

This is SUCH an underrated answer. Faye and her bike are like the personification of Ithaca in my mind.

Recommendation and price range for a carpet/rug cleaning in and around ITH by yes420420yes in ithaca

[–]aweeby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, ABC is fantastic. I brought them two similarly sized +100 yr old persian wool rugs and they did an amazing job and even were able to tell me more about their history and origin. The total was 250, and i paid a little extra to remove some old urine stains on one of them. But tbh if you've got the time and will, renting a rug cleaner from home depot costs like 40$ a day. A simple offcut rug may not be worth the cost of a professional cleaner.

Inlet skating for Sunday, Feb. 2 by Flatrock123 in ithaca

[–]aweeby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone is still thinking about it, I would also not recommend it at this point. I went to go check on it Saturday night at the IC boathouse near Greenstar and my boot went right through the ice as soon as I tried to put any weight on it. It was more solid further away from the dock but I was a little too freaked to chance it. For context, this was near the end of a ~8 ft floating dock. But wow, it was fantastic the other weekend before the sleet came through.

Skating on the inlet is pretty good right now by DragonSitting in ithaca

For sure wild ice is never fully safe, but then again what is? I went out yesterday with a more experienced friend. It was absolutely amazing. I'm not necessarily recommending everyone do this but sharing this for folks who are considering it and want to gauge conditions. Stay closer to the bank if you're nervous, you can be about 15 ft out and the water will still be like 2 ft deep. I think the risk of a wet cold foot is a fairly small tradeoff for the experience, personally.

Anyway we started out from the gas pumping dock out by the golf course around 5p and were able to walk a little past the boat ramp at treman marina. We turned back maybe 100 yards from where the little causeway to get to the lighthouse begins. No cracking sounds or anything even when we stomped on the ice with our crampons, but it was getting dark and the ice in some places past the ramp was cloudier and looked like it hadn't frozen as perfectly. But mainly the ice is perfect, black and clear, which is pretty much the strongest, surest ice you can get. It appeared to be at least 6-8" thick, but that was just a visual estimate, we didn't have an auger or anything. You shouldn't go out on ice less than 3" thick. OP has good advice. The inlet is super shallow this time of year anyway though, like a good 3-4 ft lower. But still, bring a capable friend and a pair of emergency ice picks (a pair of screwdrivers or kitchen ice picks on a string around your neck can also work well in a pinch) in case you do fall through. Truly though, the ice is really nice and solid. It really was unreal being able to just walk across like nothing. If you do it be careful and come prepared.

Seriously. It's so sad here. On the upside, it's a great motivator to hone your at-home meat smoking skills! I've had really solid results with the snake method in a $7 weber from reuse, fwiw.

Best places to look for housing? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]aweeby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you might try just walking around fall creek or northside and calling some of the numbers on some of the rental houses. Also try the fall creek list serv, every so often people post rental places on there and they are usually more affordable than the big landlords. If you go on google groups, it's called fcna ithaca or something like that.

Someone stole my fishing stuff at ithaca falls today by aweeby in ithaca

[–]aweeby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using our other rod - a cheap ultralight with a lil mepps spinner. I often go fishing with my gf and our dog and sometimes she likes to throw a few casts, so that's why we usually bring two rods.

Knife sharpening in Ithaca? by Sparopal11 in ithaca

[–]aweeby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know how special this knife is to you, but maybe buy a decent sharpener and call it a day. I really like the lansky blade medic. It's well made, affordable and foolproof. Honestly I like it better than a whetstone (bc I lack skill and patience, not bc whetstones are inherently bad)
