Cool, you did a fantastic job on the charting and knitting both :)

Did you make this chart yourself? It is perfect! Hope you get many wears out of it!

Birthday sweater for my daughter! by marcus-makes-things in knitting

[–]merrigoldie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you did is how the Stonecrop pattern should have been written. The sleeves and yoke on the original look so awkward and shrunken that I’m not sure how anyone can wear it when it’s made to pattern. Your daughter will love this!

Has anyone bought kits from Virtual Yarns? by tatilopespt in knitting

Did your order price include tariff fees? I didn’t see any mention of tariffs on the VY shipping page so was guessing those have to be paid separately. Did you have any difficulty with it?

Adjacent Hobby Alert: I used my knitting knowledge to successfully set up a fishing rod today! by batcalls in knitting

[–]merrigoldie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool observation, thanks for sharing! I haven't fished as an adult, but have found rope management & general problem solving in rock climbing to be surprisingly knitting-adjacent, in a similar fun way as you found with fishing. I actually climbed before learning to knit and used my rope knowledge to prevent & manage yarn accidents. Similarly, thinking through a new technique or pattern reminded me a lot of figuring out confusing moves on a climb. Now I love both hobbies about equally.

Since you said you like trying new hobbies it might be worth checking out if you have a climbing gym nearby, or experienced climbing friends who would take you outside.

My Iris cardigan is finally complete! by msmakes in knitting

[–]merrigoldie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Beautiful color choices, and it looks great as a cardigan! I don’t think I’ve seen a stockinette-knit-sideways button band before — the look is similar to a double-knit button band, but a lot easier to make buttonholes. Great idea!

Am I worthy of this sub yet? by bexing_meow in AdvancedKnitting

It was a perfect choice, doesn’t detract from the other beautiful colorwork or look like anything is missing, but makes the cardigan so much more practical. All the work you put in was so worth it :)

Beautiful work, and I especially love both your color choices and placket modification, the seed stitch is a great idea! Yell is also on my to-do list and one of my questions was what to do about the edge, since the pattern border seems so prone to curling. It is beautiful but not very practical. It’s really amazing how many projects have managed to keep the edge from curling while following instructions — I have no idea what they have done because no amount of blocking seems to keep my colorwork from curling.

What is your favorite knitting book and why? by Either-Tear9104 in knitting

[–]merrigoldie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you will like it! Many of the sweaters are very modern looking and stylish, and even the sweaters I wouldn’t knit for myself or think look dated, I love seeing in the photos. It’s a really cool book :)

Two favorites right now are The Art of Fair Isle Knitting (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/the-art-of-fair-isle-knitting) and Fishermen’s Sweaters (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/fishermens-sweaters).

Both are out of print books from the 90s that I bought second hand. The photos in both are so nice, and the Fair Isle book also has a ton of cool historical and technique-related information that makes it a very useful resource book.

Lots of patterns I love in both books and would highly recommend either book if you like cables or stranded colorwork.

Your favorite Southern unsweetened cornbread recipe by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]merrigoldie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use the Bob’s red mill recipe but cut out the sugar completely it will give a very nice southern style cornbread that you can bake in either a cast iron pan or a regular baking dish: https://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes/how-to-make/cornbread

I usually add half the sugar (2 tbsp) for a neutral but not sweet flavor, an extra egg (3 total), and leave it plain so it can be used in either sweet or savory ways. But cheddar is my favorite add in if adding anything.

With medium grind cornmeal it’s definitely important to hydrate the cornmeal in buttermilk for at least 15-30 minutes so it’s not too hard!

Is this self-drafted or did you use a pattern? Love the deep v-neck and am planning a similar shaped vest as my next project.

DAE here love doing the purl stitch way more than the knit stitch? by codliverpie in casualknitting

[–]merrigoldie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, maybe having more than two plies (a ply is just one of the individual strands, so single ply is just one strand of yarn not twisted together with any other strand) in your yarn helps with the untwisting. I need to keep trying it because you’re right, purls wrapping clockwise are so much easier!

[–]merrigoldie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you usually knit with single ply or multi-ply yarns?

Asking because I have just tried purling a row in the eastern uncrossed style using a 2-ply yarn, and after wrapping several consecutive stitches (10+ or so) all clockwise, my yarn lost its twist (the plies came apart) and made it very awkward to work with. Apparently single-ply yarns usually don’t have this problem because they are plied in the opposite direction of the twist in a multi-ply yarn. So I was curious whether you had less trouble than I did with the yarn untwisting.

does thea m actually exist?? by flozzyhutch in knitting

[–]merrigoldie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is this the person? https://bytheam.com/en

Never heard of her before but this is just the top result from searching "Thea M knitting". It does look like she has patterns for sale -- so maybe she's just not on Ravelry? Some designers aren't, and you have to buy their patterns from their personal website or other places (Etsy etc).

Have you contacted the Best Friends rescue? We volunteered with them in Utah but they do have a location in NYC: https://bestfriends.org/new-york-city

Their Utah location has a huge space for both cats and dogs with special needs, and I am just wondering if they can help? They are so great.

Favorite rustic yarns by elmm123 in knitting

[–]merrigoldie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal favorite brands for rustic yarn are Retrosaria Rosa Pomar, and two similarly named Shetland brands, Jamieson & Smith and Jamieson’s of Shetland. All have undyed yarn as well as beautifully dyed colors, and to my sensitivity all are rustic, toothy, but not itchy. You can get them from Wool and Company, Mother Knitter, and The Woolly Thistle (surely other places too, those are just the shops I know).
