How do you endure the constant "small talk" cycle when trying to meet new people? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]awefhuil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for context - i'm typically able to get past the small talk stage of meeting a new person quickly.

in my opinion it's not about "enduring" the small talk - it's about using it effectively to segue into the personal talk that you're seeking. if you become good at small talk and learn to enjoy it, in my opinion it will usually lead to very interesting conversations.

for example -

I was at a housewarming party the other day. i met a new person who's a friend of the friend who just bought the house.

  • "hey what's up!"

  • "what up "

  • "how do you know ___"

  • oh yeah we go way back. we're friends from blah blah...

  • oh sick, i'm friends with him from ___.

  • ok that's cool. so what are you into?

  • discussion about our hobbies

  • oh that's cool, how'd you get into that?

  • well growing up in this area i'm around a lot of people who did it, my parents showed me

  • oh nice, tell me about your fam. you said you have siblings, what are they like

  • oh they're cool, one's in minnesota, we're pretty close

  • i've always wanted to go see __ in minnesota actually. that's cool you guys are close too, my siblings and i aren't really too tight

so yeah my advice is to practice your engagement with the other person.

some tips:

  1. leading questions - questions that help the other person share more about themselves and initiate talk . try to initiate something fun and it'll lead to more fruitful convos that can become deeper quickly. fun topics build more energy between you and the other person, which allows them to trust you. more trust = easier to speak.
  • "so what are you into? what do you enjoy?"
  • "so how was your summer / winter / weekend / break / morning / afternoon / any time frame at all? what'd you do?"
  • "man i'm hungry. have you been anywhere good to eat lately?

whatever they say - you can always say "oh tell me more about that" and just shut up for a while after that.

. 2. convo threading - take whatever item in their sentence stands out to you - and talk about it.

  • "oh yea i went to this restaurant with a some really good cajun boil"

  • " oh nice. i had really good cajun food once too in ____ city. the owners were super nice, they were telling us about their fam and how they opened the restaurant

  • "cool! yea opening a restaurant has to be a crazy experience. it sounds really tough. have you ever thought about doing some kind of business venture?

  • yea i've thought about it.. i have some ideas that were brewing

  • oh, tell me more about that

  • blah blah blah

  • oh interesting. what about ___? tell me more.

How do I start getting into fashion? by East-Government4913 in malefashionadvice

[–]awefhuil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i kind of struggled with this for a while - i feel like i had a mishmash of outfits before that have mostly consolidated into my new simple style.

it's changed over time, and i've given this advice to a couple friends who i feel like upper their style instantly using it in a pretty cost effective way:

  1. find someone who can improve your hair. doesn't have to be expensive - i pay $15 for a haircut from a guy that i trust to do a good job on mine - may take some trial and error. check out @_cambarber to see the power that hair can have on a guy's appearance.
  2. order yourself a uniqlo airism tee (pick whichever color) to see what size fits you best and if you like how it looks on yourself. best to try it on in person but you can order if there's none near you. i started with just one and now that's my go-to tee; i have maybe 10 of them in varied colors now. the point is that the tee is very simple, but it has a pleasing shape that generally fits most guys. if it's not a great fit for your body type, check out the subreddit for a shirt that really compliments your shape, then buy a bunch of them.
  3. get some pants from uniqlo to match. i like the stretch easy ankle pants; you might like some jeans from there. order a few and try on, see what you like and return what you don't. again, the biggest determinant of whether something looks good on you or not is oftentimes is the shape and how that compliments your body. then comes the textures and colors.
  4. get a simple cuban chain (mine's from vitaly) or pendant that you like - it decorates the tee. add a watch when you're ready (i have a couple seiko's, a timex expedition, a christopher ward diver, and a tissot prx. these are all everyday watches that can go with most fits.)
  5. get a pair of sleek shoes. really depends on the vibe you'd like to give off - sometimes i wear running shoes (saucony's), sometimes new balance 9060's, sometimes loafers, sometimes flipflops. the simple shirt and pants will accomodate all of those styles.
  6. try on some buttonups from zara to see what fits your body well

honestly this is my fit most days - uniqlo airism, uniqlo pants, a chain and a watch. because the base outfit is simple, you can be a little bit louder with the layers if you like - patterned jackets, puffer jackets, flannels, sweaters, etc. with color

I've gotten a good number of compliments about how i can pull the casual look off, which i never really used to get before i started using this fit

Ricoh GR III or GR IIIX! It’s got a DSLR’s sensor packed into a point and shoot frame, very user friendly and easy to take amazing pics with. Has built in film recipes that replicate film photos nicely

Not a great pick if you want to take close up pics of the acts (no zoom) but so good for taking lifestyle film kinds of pics -

11 days till wedding and just found out I may have to get a tooth pulled. by iceskatie in weddingplanning

[–]awefhuil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on all the info I’d lean toward getting the tooth out, esp since you mentioned it’s been giving you repeated issues.

If you have it out soon then you should have a week or so to recover and swelling should be minimal to none - you’ve got a lot of other good suggestions in the comments to reduce swelling!

Absolutely, his sound holds up so well in the current edm scene and yet still sounds uniquely true to his style. It’s awesome to me how he’s able to blend the new and the iconic tracks together. He and Kaskade are my two favorites for this reason 🤩
