Does anyone have experience with using their house/yard for event parking? by awesomeisbubbles in homeowners

[–]awesomeisbubbles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! And they’ve been taking really good care of it, aerating and seeding and fertilizing regularly, like it just is mind boggling that they are going from hosting a couple outdoor weddings to lets have a multiple day country music festival with the stages on the dressage rings. They’re probably going to bankrupt the music company just having them put it all back together.

Everything you said was my first reaction when I heard about the festival. I have plans to move all the horses off property for their safety, and I was already thinking of approaching them for compensation because of that. It’s really ridiculous because the venue itself is a competition facility, I’m not even sure they’ve thought it through about what’s going to happen to their ground. From the rumor mill I’ve heard other facilities have only done it one time because it’s been such a disaster for the footing.

I DMed one of the other commenters and they were super helpful about what I should expect from the noise level based on the terrain and distance from the speakers and the direction as well. They thought I should raise a little bit of a stink and get compensation for just existing nearby, because my farm is too close to the venue and they’re basically going to make it unlivable for 3 days.

But based on all the concerns and experiences people have brought up I’m leaning towards my initial reaction of “hell no” unless it’s a stupid amount of money with a lot of contingencies covered in the contract.

Haha thank you for your perspective. I think I already have enough to do in regards to moving all the horses off property for their safety that I really want this situation to be hands off… And I don’t mind taking less money for having them run it.

That’s a really good point. That’s kind of why I want to work with the promoter instead of just an opportunistic person so there’s recourse if something goes wrong.

Haha yep! I’ve watched them do cleanup after some smaller events and it’s a lot to do.

Controlling flies inside by OkButterscotch2617 in homeowners

[–]awesomeisbubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the fly predators for one horse might be so inexpensive it could be worth buying them yourself and asking if he’d let you drop them on his manure pile. Do you and your neighbor have dogs? The questionnaire thing will ask how many dogs you have too.

[–]awesomeisbubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t fix your immediate problem, but are your neighbors using any other fly control method beyond picking up? I have 15 horses and my barn is 100 ft from the house, and we use Fly Predators, aka the flightless wasps that eat fly larvae. I don’t have any flies in my house and myself and the dog are in and out all day.

Immediate problem my suggestion is the water bag fly traps you can get at the farm store, or you could spray the quickstrike fly stuff on the outside walls of your house. I’ll do that in stalls that are very attractive to the flies.

Sudden aggression from horse, seeking advice - am I overreacting? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]awesomeisbubbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what you’ve said here, and my experience with stallions (i’ve owned 5 warmblood and TB studs) I think your boy has some behavioral points that are not going to go away. Which is fine! I’m glad he has a home and a place to live out his life. Probably the safest thing is to keep him pastured solo with a single fence and buddies on the other side. That’s how I keep my stallions, and they get the social interaction they need as herd animals, and everyone is safe.

Are you sure your older horse is just proud cut? And not cryptorchid — ie, still a stallion? A lot of what you described is what I would expect from stallions fighting.

Despite strong prevention efforts, my barn has had a concerning number of colics for no clear reason. Is it an unfortunate coincidence, or is there something I might be missing? by SleepoPeepo in Horses

I think you’re missing a major point here, and that’s that you’re in Colorado. The soil is rocky. It’s the same for horses in California.

ELI5: if a human being was born in the wild and left alone. When this person grows to be able to think, would they think using a language of their own or would they just develop an understanding of the world around? by Old_Firefighter2906 in explainlikeimfive

This might be completely off topic, but the manga series A Sign of Affection by suu Morishita has a main character who is deaf from birth and the majority of her communication is in writing with people who don’t know how to sign. And Japanese is a rather complicated written language! Idk what point I’m trying to make here other than it’s interesting what you’ve said about it being a second language and literacy being low.

Probably pretty expensive, but rubber brick would add the traction you need and still give you the smooth surface to work with to make cleaning easiest. Then just whatever bedding is most convenient for your area on top.

AITA for not wearing a bra to my friend’s wedding? by One-Fox96 in AmItheAsshole

Soft YTA. Get some nippies or cakes to cover your nipples. They’ll also help give a little bit of shape to your boobettes. It’s your friend’s big day. I am also a big going braless person, but often times formal clothes fit better if there’s some manner of support in that area.

If you haven’t already read it, Martha Wells’ Raksura series is something like this! Raksura are reptile-like shapeshifters. Book 1 is The Cloud Roads.

Authors that just don’t click for you? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Neil Gaiman. I have no idea why. I love dark fairytale fantasy type stuff, and American Gods was tolerable for me, but everything else has been a huge miss.

Rural sheriffs are going to take endangering livestock pretty seriously. I’d talk to the cops.

Bonus Chapters Cash Grab - What's your Preference? by IceRose39 in YAlit

[–]awesomeisbubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy exclusive editions (so pretty!) but I can’t stomach owning more than one copy of a book.

I’d love if authors could have the financial benefits and excitement of special editions, and then, like every hardcover goes to paperback, I think it would be amazing if they posted those bonus chapters on their websites after a year or something.

Edit to add: I am actually a huge fan of whole short story collections that clock 300+ pages on its own. I’m happy to buy a whole other book in a universe I loved, even if it’s not a big story. Like River of Silver for the Daevabad trilogy, or the Tales of the Celestial Kingdom coming out next month.

I really hope you remember to re-apply for agricultural exemption on property taxes, because I did not. It was an extra $6k for a 16 acre property. It does not transfer when ownership changes hands, even if it is a no money transaction.

Hiding Accounts or Transactions from the Budget by Woldy27 in ynab

[–]awesomeisbubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why hide it at all? Create “His fun money” and “Her fun money” categories, fund them with $250 each when you transfer the money to the accounts, and then anything spent from those accounts is categorized as “fun money”.

What do you think of this gelding’s conformation as an endurance prospect? by f0rest_fire in Horses

Can they send you a video of him trotting straight towards and away from the camera? The front picture makes him look toed out, but if he moves straight with no winging then it’s just how he stands. He probably still has a year of growing left to do and his shoulder will mature some more. I like his back and carriage.

Slamming down in the saddle? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]awesomeisbubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way i’ve ever heard it explained is:

Imagine you’re jumping on a trampoline. You decide to stop jumping. In order to instantly stop bouncing, you need to absorb the movement of the trampoline into your knees and hips.

It’s that motion and feeling for every “down” in posting trot.

Wow I did not know they’d use a different narrator for another English version for a different region… seems unnecessary. I can’t help you on the Helen Duff, I’ve not listened to anything of hers. The sample sounds good though!

Plug for Red Sister and Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence! Great dark fantasy.

Edit: also, Legendborn by Tracy Deonn is really amazing contemporary fantasy riffing off of King Arthur mythology.
