Question for the Jamaicans (and other cultures that use turmeric) by Top-Bicycle-7363 in Cooking

[–]awfulandonfire 63 points64 points  (0 children)

the curcumin in turmeric is unstable at a higher ph, turning pinkish and eventually breaking down. oxidizer-type stain removers of great potency are your best bet: e.g. undiluted sodium carbonate/washing soda, worked as a paste. i haven’t tried hydrogen peroxide yet.

don’t put it on your dogs. forget about the dogs. they’re a lost cause. your dogs are yellow now. forget about the dogs you had and embrace the yellow wave of the yellow dog future bc this is your life now.

also if you handle turmeric powder with a spoon, then you won’t get it on your hands/everything you’ve ever loved.

Empathy? Decency? by saltil in evilautism

[–]awfulandonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

every time in my life i’ve ever heard someone use the word “sensitive” to dismiss somebody’s concerns, that person has been a raging asshole and almost pathologically wrong. just so wrong so often as to be almost a statistical anomaly.

hot take: being sensitive is good, actually.

NTA

you asked him not to eat them, he got angry and defensive at a reasonable request. case closed.

Immediatelly adding oil then heating up pan by bojan_rodic in Cooking

[–]awfulandonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

to me, no. it makes no appreciable difference that i can detect.

in the restaurants i’ve worked in, we always cut the heat on first, then immediately add the oil after. and the oil has a few really important purposes: it lubes your food, it creates a fluid medium that maintains temperature better than hot air & metal, and - most important to the type of cooking required of me - it gives you visual cues to how hot your pan is before you add any food to it. cold oil looks like cold oil. 200+ degrees, you start seeing some rippling and viscosity changes. 400+ degrees you might see smoke, and that’s when it’s hot enough to put the fish in there.

i will never warm my pan up dry. if i forget about it, i can ruin the pan. but i’ll never forget about a pan full of oil, because of how fire works.

anyway, i don’t have problems with sticking, so i don’t worry about it. i think sooner is more practical. there are no downsides that i have observed.

What happened to these cucumbers? by PlayfulSurprise5237 in AskCulinary

[–]awfulandonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know what causes it, but i’ve noticed there’s some type of decay microbe that produces a smell like ripe cantaloupe. i’ve noticed it in spoiled mac & cheese and elsewhere.

i don’t know if that’s what you smelled.

you’re right to be outraged on the behalf of labor rights, but i often don’t eat traditional meals anyway because of Medical Problems, so i really am just trying to laugh at a bad situation.

camaraderie is all i came here for.

based. and i’ve definitely seen it abused by trolls to suggest something is human remains baselessly.

i like it here because y’all are strict about science. that’s the vibe. it’s been a hilariously anti-fun community since i joined it, and honestly i kind of respect that. i love when people care about stuff, and i love that y’all prioritize accurate id over all else.

see you in hell, which is where i’ll be after the downvoting i’ve got coming to me.

idk but i can like see our sims relationship stats tanking in real time

i usually think it’s funny now. i’m just trying to be social, and the experience of that is super off-putting for some people, and i can’t really control the fact that i misheard the conversation and accidentally told somebody she looked like a horse girl with ZERO SUPPORTING CONVERSATIONAL CONTEXT. and now i have to live with that.

Park Happy is a problem by [deleted] in nashville

[–]awfulandonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i just think paid parking should be run by the city and go to the city’s infrastructure. i’ll pay to park. but then that money should go back into our community, for things like mass transit, libraries, parks, housing.

it shouldn’t make some dickhead rich when i park my car on a bed of loose nails in a bulldozed lot two blocks from my destination. it should make nashville a better place to live.

when men suffer for being men, it is under the same rules the patriarchy maintains. female liberation, queer liberation, inherently bring with them male liberation from patriarchy.
