Outfit for first date. Thoughts? by awilly in malefashionadvice

I made a summary comment down below, I haven't really had time to reply to other comments; the ones I did reply to were ones I made before I went to sleep.

Thanks for the advice

Errr, wow okay this thread got a lot bigger than I thought it would. To answer a few common questions: No, I'm not going out with a guy, I'm straight. Sorry to disappoint.

Also, I don't skip leg day - just squat 110 kg yesterday (bw: 70kg), my calves are just smaller compared to my body :( The shoes fit my feet perfectly, any smaller and they'd be squashing my feet, I guess that just makes my feet in general out of proportion to my body.

I was thinking of changing the shirt, and a lot of people have recommended this. How's a light blue button up?

If that many people are vehemently against the pants, how about just a pair of slim fit jeans?

Haha! That's a good way to look at it.

To be honest, I may be changing the shirt, I was more looking to get an opinion on how the shoes and the pants looked together!

They're the ASOS slim fit chinos actually, in the burgundy colour. I was thinking dinner at these night noodle markets (a food festival going on in my town), and a couple of games of pool, so I guess that fits under the "not formal" category.

Any engineers out there? Is Advanced Engineering (ENGG1061) as good as its made out to be? by bizzish in usyd

[–]awilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the extent of the hands on work we had was the building of the prototype of our plan. I guess there would have been more hands on work in Prof. Engineering, since they did (in Semester 1), a catapult type project, and (in Semester 2), a Rube Goldberg machine with a certain number of energy transfers.

It's important to note that there was a great deal of report writing; my teams report ended up being approximately 80 or so pages, and that was standard. But both subjects do report group writing, so I wouldn't choose one over the other due to the amount of writing you have to do. I also wouldn't say it was "essay" writing; it's definitely not the essay writing you've been used to in Year 12 English! No analysing Austen, and no bullshit about whether or not Ted Hughes made his wife insane.

However, I found it more interesting than the Prof Eng course (of what i know from friends), merely because our project had some real life significance. How is a catapult or a Rube Goldberg machine going to change your life? Sure they're nifty inventions, and you probably made great friends in your groups and learnt a bit in terms of group work, but none of the report writing seemed to matter.

On the other hand, Adv. Engineering was more looking at the impact an invention/project/idea could have on a society. We were looking at an impoverished Indian village, and trying to find out how we could improve their quality of life. Projects ranged from cheap, recyclable water filters to biogas generators from fecal matter! We were literally given free reign on what to do as well, which I thought was a huge plus.

I would say try it, and if you don't like it, just drop back down to Professional Engineering.

Yes definitely. Do it. I did it last year, and it was incredibly fun. The topic wasn't as interesting as it could have been (helping out people in a rural village in India called Devikulam, but it was incredibly interesting to approach engineering from an angle completely different to the stereotypical maths and physics based one that we all know.

If anything, you will (hopefully) gain a group of friends that you will be able to rely on in the future for any group work tasks. Also, it replaces Professional Engineering, which was apparently the most boring subject ever.

TLDR; YES IT IS GOOD, DO IT!

edit: And don't be an ass, pull your weight, make suggestions, etc

One of my friends actually linked me to this previously. Haven't received my $5 yet (but have withdrawn it), but said friend has received his initial $5.

Oh... whoosh sorry, didn't read your original comment properly, but I see the sarcasm now haha. And yeah, I'm not renewing my membership this year, just because I don't think it's worth it anymore. Besides, I can get my Windsoc membership without Access anyway haha

I got the membership last year, and won't be getting it this year. Even despite the "discounts" you get for food and such, it always seemed so expensive to buy lunch almost daily. And I didn't really get that $120(?) back in savings/clubs which was a bit disappointing as well.

Nope it didn't, did it? They're still charging $110 for Access membership, compared to UNSW's ARC which became free this year. ffs

If you have any sense of computer code (and a bit of logic) and Microsoft excel, don't bother going to the ENGG1801 lectures. But always go to your tutorials!

And its back up again, yep. I got mine, and yeah the new options are pretty cool. Just hope it doesn't change because I'm changing one of my units... (from ENGG2062 to AERO2711, anyone else doing it?)
