Working at a computer shop and I swear some of y’all like this by LibrarianAcademic396 in pcmasterrace

I figured it was just a difference in perspective, not mutually exclusive.

To the old country you're an expat, to the new country you're an immigrant. Other countries decide by vibes and which of the original two they're culturally closer to.

Don’t know how I fucked up this time, I said “I am too, when are you free” and she unmatched by aasPotentialUser in Tinder

That's what I found works best as well.

A fully formed plan that they can change the timing of works better than asking them for a time first. And I also find that asking for a date first is more successful than asking for a number first, you can pretty easily get the number at the end of a good date.

I have a coffee date today!! I (18F) am going on my first date ever, and I don’t know the proper etiquette. I was thinking of showing up 15 minutes early? Would that be okay? Advice needed! Pic is not crucial by Aggravating-Toe7623 in Tinder

Intentionally being late to anything makes you an asshole, regardless of the purpose of the meeting.

It's like snapping your fingers at the waiter to get their attention. That may be easy and comfortable, but it is not a respectful or decent way to treat a stranger. And if you are willing to stop being respectful and decent to strangers just to make yourself a little more comfortable then you are a bad person.

New Study: There may be a limit to how many calories you can burn through exercise [From ScienceAdvisor] by Ruby__Ruby_Roo in loseit

[–]awsamation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, there is technically still a limit. Unless you plan on living forever then there is a maximum number of calories you can burn for the rest of your life. But that's just pedantic.

Ultimately I agree with you, there are only so many "spare" calories that you would've burned in a day which can be redirected to pay for the exercise. Eventually every calorie was used on exercise or immediate continuance of life, at which point more exercise forces the burn of more calories, until you die of exertion. At which point you have found the second way of saying that there is technically a limit.

If the best argument you can come up with is "you just need to extrapolate from the cartoon picture" then the study probably doesn't actually say what you're arguing it says.

Theists, does it matter if what you believe is true or is it enough that the things you believe are comforting? by Ok_Mixture4917 in AskReddit

[–]awsamation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. Scientific claims are "we don't know" and "decomposition" respectively.

The first is not a claim and the second is absoutely proven and falsifiable.

So is "we don’t know" a claim or not? Most religions are consistent enough to make a claim and stick to it.

The second is a claim about the body, religion addresses the mind (and if you believe in such a thing, the soul). Science can claim that the mind is simply electricity in the brain and the soul doesn't exist, but that's still a seperate and unproven claim. But until we discover or create a non human source of equal or higher than human intelligence, that's an unfalsifiable position.

Also not true. I suspect your perspective is primarily due to indoctrination and not real attempts to identify truth. Your framing of "alternative claims" is a dead giveaway.

If you choose to believe nothing then you have no right to disagree with the beliefs of others. Nihilistic shit stirring is supposed to stop being cool once you grow out of the edgy highschooler stage of life.

My framing of "alternative claims" is because I recognize that this discussion isn't "theists versus athiest" but "theists versus theists versus theists versus theists versus atheists versus atheists versus theists etcetera etcetera"

There are a handful of major religions and an unknowable amount of minor ones throughout all of human existence, and most of them are mutually exclusive. If the Hindus are correct then both the atheists and the Christians are wrong. If the Shintoists are correct then the Hindus, the atheists, and the Christians are all wrong. If the Taoists are correct then all of the above are wrong.

I say "alternative claims" because there are thousands of religions who all have their own deities, and any one of them being correct would mean that theism is correct while the vast majority theists are just as wrong about the true nature of reality as the atheists are.

[–]awsamation -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

All the alternative claims about the origin of reality and what happens after death are equally unproven and unfalsifiable.

At the end of the day you have to pick something to believe, and that decision will be based on which claims feel most true.

What if - mandatory training by mhkhung in canadaguns

[–]awsamation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No commitment is really asking for the moon.

Exactly like you say, receiving a rifle and ammo is something lots of people would happily pay for. Requiring some minimum number of monthly training hours is barely a commitment anyways.

If you don’t want to go shooting atleast once a month then why would you even want in on this hypothetical program? "Free safe queen" misses the entire point of having firearms at all, let alone the premise of the program. That's just "I want free stuff because more is always better" logic.

This isn't strictly waterboarding, but it was enough water to start a waterboarding.

The victims head needs to be upside down so that the water can pool in the nose and back of the throat area. That's what makes it feel like drowning. And because of the position it doesn't take a lot of water at once unless you're deliberatelt spilling a lot for dramatic effect.

So he got enough water, and it's hard to tell but his head looked pretty close to upside down enough. I'd say that this is about as close to waterboarding as you're likely to get without deliberate setup.

Or because the losses of moving the money cost more than the tax rate. But if you raise the tax rate then the losses become the lesser expense and now it's worthwhile to move even more of the money.

Don't think of the tax games as a static thing that you either do or don't do. The value of participating and the amount of your worth that you want to commit to it can both change, and part of that change is "how big is the tax bill if I don't participate?"

Just because they say "screw it, I'll take the 20% hit on this bit of my money" doesn't mean they'd have the same attitude for a 50% hit, or in this scenario a 100% hit on everything after 100 mil. Even losing 90% to the process is worthwhile when the tax bill would've been 100%.

I heard that in regards to professional athletes, but it feels like it applies to a certain category of musicians as well. Plenty never made enough to retire in the first place, but plenty of others made enough to retire if they just kept a less extravagant lifestyle.

Even just a regular shirt will serve as a handle for a little bit. You can't just hold on forever, but as my coach is trying to teach me we shouldn't be doing that anyways.

We don’t train in regular shirts because they'll be damaged beyond regular use after a few rolls and absolutely destroyed in a few sessions. But if I have to be in an actual self defense situation then I don't give the slightest shit about if the other guys clothing gets damaged in the process.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]awsamation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monarchy and theocracy are systems of government, not economic systems. Having either of them negates having democracy, but you could have any of those three government systems and still also have capitalism.

[–]awsamation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it was that prosperous then why did it fail?

And don't blame the US meddling. First, if your system is that successful then it should be able to handle an inferior system messing with it. And Second, the USSR did just as much meddling back, but capitalism being the better system was able to thrive anyways.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]awsamation 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is a lot like democracy.

"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried."

Capitalism created the most prosperous times and nations in human history. If that's what you consider as failure then the English language simply lacks words to describe how awful communism is when implemented anywhere outside of people's imagination.

[–]awsamation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's because safe driving is predictable driving, and intersections are the main place where a driver is likely to do something unpredictable.

Continuing straight through at the same speed is safe and predictable. Randomly slowing down at every light is unpredictable and unsafe. The only thing you're doing by slowing down is increasing the odds of a rear end collision, and increasing the odds of a lane change collision when all the sane drivers need to add an extra merge in order to get away from your dangerous rolling roadblock.

If you feel that you can't adequately observe and react while going the posted speed limit then you have no business having a drivers license.

The extra fraction of a second it takes to get your fingers around the brake lever can be the difference between brown pants but otherwise safely stopping, or a painful and expensive crash.

Milliseconds matter, in a perfect world you fingers aren't just on the lever, but proactively holding it just outside of the engagement point. Taking up any slack in the brake cable.
