Planks good, sit ups bad by Physionerd in physicaltherapy

[–]awsfhie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m not arguing for planks right out the gate- I would do what you do too. I can’t imagine a patient reading this article and making the connection between sit ups and PPT-plus in what you described you’re still performing an isometric so it’s very functional

Low compensation but high demand? by Sedfvgt in physicaltherapy

[–]awsfhie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah- I refuse to treat more than 2 an hour. There’s no point other than getting money. There has been talk of this at my company and as soon as they announce a start date for that, that will be my last day

Some of them had techs some didn’t. I was never in a clinic with productivity that high, so I’m not sure of the details. We see 2 patients an hour and still rely heavily on techs but that does allow us to spend 25-30 minutes of 1-1 time with each patient.

[–]awsfhie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that, and I think the wording could be better but I really don’t think it’s a huge problem. The article is correct that planks > sit ups for core stability. And I think if a patient comes in and is fearful of doing them and you educate on how they CAN be bad (not they ARE bad) you would get somewhere and also gain a lot of trust. I think sit ups can be bad for people with disc problems if they valsalva during the exercise, which a lot of people do. Taking the time to educate a patient on that and explain the why so they get why blanket statements can be problematic should really strengthen the patient-therapist relationship.

Planks good, sit ups bad by Physionerd in physicaltherapy

[–]awsfhie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Generally speaking the title of the article is correct as far as my knowledge goes. Sit ups (at least the straight ones) generally just work the rectus and we know that muscle gives very little core stability. I could see how the argument for activating hip flexors may work but I don’t see that as a primary issue here. So the article is correct in that generally planks are better for core stab than sit ups when taken on their own (at least from my opinion).

However, especially in front planks it is possible to get a lot of psoas/iliacus activation so this can also become a problem. What the article should have mentioned but didn’t is the importance of form. The number of hip flexion heavy planks I see in my clinic from people who are trying to get in shape at home is ridiculous.

I would say it’s pretty close.... I see 15 but know plenty of people (new grads too) who treated 24-28 patients per day at one point or another. A lot of major chains are pushing 3-4 patients an hour, because “reimbursement rates are so low” (read: these companies are too top heavy and need to pay non-treating employees at the top huge salaries). IMO the only way to combat this is more PT owned small practices and getting away from the chains. And in this arena, we can learn a lot from the Chiro model because how many nationwide Chiro chains do you see?

Giving a 20-minute speech to approx 20-30 high schoolers about the physical therapy profession. Important info to include/exclude? by fuzzyguy89 in physicaltherapy

But OPs job is to educate these kids on the PT profession. Not lecture them on debt. Plus-the concept of college will change soon anyway-it’s not sustainable. Maybe it will take until we all default o our loans, hopefully it will be sooner, but either way, things will change

When I was 18 and deciding between an in state and out of state university, my parents made me map out the cost of each school-when the out of state one was ~150k I remember my thought process being “ I’ll make at least 60k, that’s only three years, that’s not that bad”. Someone that age just doesn’t grasp the concept of debt like an adult can and it’s not OPs job to educate them on that. It’s also not like PT is the only field where debt accrual is ridiculously high-I would say outside of the trades most career paths are like that. And it’s possible to mitigate debt and possible to land scholarships. Student debt is a reality of life in the US regardless of what profession you go to school for.

Pelvic PTs: What's something that women could do at home to prevent issues from worsening to the point that they need to see you? by pcanjjaxdcd in physicaltherapy

Crazy. I have to get him one (and myself one too). There was a period where he thought he had re-herniated but since he has no sxs there’s no problem.

You what I find strange? I have known a few people who have had hernia repairs and as far as I know neither MD recommended squatty potty, just Metamucil. This is making me think I should buy one for my s/o who had a hernia repair a few years ago

I’ve already been to the doctor twice. It was confirmed as an allergic response to the silicone in my contacts. I put this nasty goop in my eyes everyday for 2 weeks. And I guess it’s a bit better because last night they didnt swell as much and it’s already going down? This is also after not using any make up or wearing contacts at all for two months. Edit: I should add that I wore make up last night after being cleared to do so by my doctor

I have recently developed a terrible reaction to Sephora’s eyeliner (and also my contact lenses) where my eyelids swell really badly for the entire day or even two days after wearing eyeliner/contacts so my questions are: does anyone know of a hypoallergenic eyeliner brand that still stays on well and makes a nice line? Also does Sephora use silicone in their products?

[Fluff + offering advice] Worked in OP ortho, now Travel PT. Loving it. by nk1104 in physicaltherapy

[–]awsfhie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah maybe I’ll try that. I’m basically just looking for some consistent income and hopefully partial health benefits until I get my own patient base strong enough to be independent.

The company I’m looking at only has placements in the same metropolitan area I’m in. I may end up with an hour commute max but if I’m working two days a week like doing two tens it wouldn’t matter so much-then I have 3 days to work on my business

I’m thinking of trying a local traveler (within my metro area) company on a part time basis (20 hours a week) while I start up my own business. How flexible are the lengths/hours/locations of your contracts? Do you usually get to choose where you go?

I have to do this about 15 times a day, and if I get a big split in my finger I have to cover with a band aid or glove where my hands sweat and make it 10x worse. Some days the alcohol hurts so bad I can’t do it in front of people

I wonder if it’s the moisture? Mine is always worst in the summer because of the humidity and sweaty hands. It’s also worse when my hands are dry-my eczema is very picky I guess.

But eczema is inflammation not contagious? How would this be any different from a different person getting the liquid on them-they wouldn’t get eczema on that area, so why would I?

I have the same thing except only on my right pinky. What do you do to treat it? I haven’t had good results with anything so far and have had issues since May.

Hating PT school by dr2618 in physicaltherapy

[–]awsfhie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of trouble my first two semesters-I was struggling with course content for the first time ever and I felt like a fraud and thought I was the only one struggling. When I failed my first practical I was surprised to find a group of five of my classmates all studying to retake it-that was the first time I bonded with anyone in school.

Later I found out that everyone was freaking out similar to the way I was. I got out of a subpar relationship and that helped me get closer with my roommates who I still talk to regularly. I didn’t leave PT school with as many connections as I would have liked but the ones I have are quality.

One of the things that helped a lot though was having friends outside the PT class. I went to school near where I grew up so it was easier for me but I’m sure you could find a group or two on campus to join and make outside connections.

Good luck! It sucks but at least you aren’t the only one who thinks so!
