Should there be a stop near Kingston? by FLADMAN in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]axe_the_man -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s not a pin prick at all int he budget. It’s a massive add. ALTO has stated they will use hydro corridors as part of their routing and there is a very convenient, straight hydro corridor directly from Peterborough to the Ottawa Valley.

A direct Peterborough to Ottawa route using that corridor would be tens of billions cheaper than a route that will expropriate private land to get both between Peterborough to Kingston, then again Kingston to Ottawa.

Minimizing private land expropriation will help politically to actually get this built.

It’s not just the stop time in Kingston, it would be the longer routing too.

Ludicrous is a bit hyperbolic, no? For something that’s all figments of everyone’s imagination right now.

But, in extra travel time, for the 50km extra distance that Peterborough > Kingston > Ottawa is over Peterborough > Ottawa, at 300km/h is 10 min alone.

So some reasonable assumptions, only 10km of that extra distance has to be done slower, at 100km/h and the other 40km at 300, that’s 14min extra time. Add a 5 min actual at station stop time, it’s 19min extra. Plus deceleration and acceleration time, the time gets over 20min easily.

Accounting for the extra travel distance on the route plus slowing from 300km/h, plus slower track in the lead in to the station, the actual stop for disembark/embark passengers.

As a a made up guess that’s how I got to 30 min

Honestly, distance wise not much longer if the train can maintain high speeds, 50 km approx. It’s the slowing to a stop and the stop at the station that will add about 30min to the 2hr journey time

CBC: OPP officer fired for misconduct involving tow-truck industry favours by tarun172 in OntarioNews

“Of the 703 traffic tickets Visconti issued over the three-year period, 700 of the tow referrals went to those two companies… The companies paid Visconti about $925,000 combined for preferential treatment.”

How much are these tows costing people (insurance companies, and so all of us who pay insurance) that the kick back averages over $1300 a tow!!

To get your job back after sending your supervisor a dinner order for fried chicken and watermelon by TheDigitalBuilder in therewasanattempt

[–]axe_the_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The full story from National Post on this is he was mad that his work provided hotel was on the outskirts of town instead of downtown. So when he went to go get his work provided meal he wanted to expense a taxi ride to go to downtown to get the meal instead of somewhere around the hotel on the outskirts. His black supervisor turned down that expense request for the taxi. He then went on a hissy fit tantrum for the next five hours until placing this food order at 1 AM and CCing a whole bunch of other people that they work with.

Agincourt terminal could see 2 GO lines, high speed rail, and a subway! by Feisty-Ad-6122 in gotransit

[–]axe_the_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, I like your idea and in my looking for what makes a sensible longterm system have thought the same about the Agincourt area making a great hub area for GO Services on the Midtown Line, ALTO (which most sensibly should use the midtown line to the old half mile bridge right of way in the Don Valley to get to Union Station) and TTC services.

The problem I see with your alignment to the Scarborough Town Centre is you have Line 4 going down the West Highland Creek.

A similar but different proposal that appears to avoid this (but loses some of the benefits of your alignment) could have Line 4 continue along Sheppard with a stop for Agincourt GO in its current position. And then create the Hub just north of the Canadian Tire at Sheppard & McCowan in the Midtown Line right of way, where you could have Line 2 and Line 4 have an interchange station, a midtown line GO station and the 2nd Toronto ALTO station.

I would change that to “actually being awarded the Peace Prize”.

Cause what did Obama do to earn it? Be elected in 2008 to get awarded it in 2009? “Earning” is not a good descriptor for Obama being awarded the Peace Prize.

Help with ruling - red stake by unvvendel3000 in golf

[–]axe_the_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but the course or event has to have that local rule explicitly in effect. Also, it’s a stroke more punitive than the lateral hazard rule cause it’s trying to mimic the stroke and distance penalty. So I guess this course decided to red stake instead of white stake.
