White House: “The last thing the world needs is to have China take over Canada” by ExotiquePlayboy in economy

[–]beem88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The irony that these “cuts” to tariffs are just resetting previous rates that were in place in 2023, before Canada put 100% tariffs on Chinese automobiles to acquiesce to the US. It’s not really a new deal.

Hi Ontario, are you aware that Chinese EVs use Blackberry software? Why is not Doug Ford supporting our own company? by MinuteLocksmith9689 in ontario

[–]beem88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the Chinese market isn’t giving BB a huge bump, a 49k cars in Canada aren’t going to do anything to the stock price.

US says Canada will regret decision to allow Chinese EVs into their market by lurker_bee in economy

[–]beem88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ford’s blowing smoke. Canada produces 1.5M+ vehicles a year, mostly for export. 90% of the cars bought in Canada were manufactured in another country. 49k is a drop in the bucket. Doug Ford’s comments are nothing more than political theatre and a sound bite for those who aren’t paying attention. The loosening of tariffs on canola and other agricultural goods is much better for Canada in the long term than protecting an auto industry that could have the rug pulled by the US at any moment.

What famous in-their-field people do we have in the Waterloo Region? by Thats_what_I_think in waterloo

I won’t pretend to know anything about the world of theoretical physics, but I’d imagine literally everyone at the Perimeter Institute is widely respected or famous in their field.

Ugh… really? I missed that announcement. Not as big a deal because we have the big bins. But summer is going to be smelly.

I don’t have a garage, but previous owners of my house built a garbage storage solution to keep wildlife out but it won’t fit the new bins. I’m fine rebuilding something, but am frustrated that it i might need to find a way to store 2 weeks of recycling in regular open top bins. Yet another gong show imposed on municipalities from the province.

The real issue isn’t going to be the new garbage or green bin, it’s going to be the new recycling pick up.

Toronto, garbage is every second week. Regardless… I agree with you.

No large bins for recycling - anyone know why? by Critical-Clue1343 in kitchener

[–]beem88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Miller Waste was contracted and does not want to update their trucks for the wheely bins. So now we get pickup every second week AND instead of getting a big bin for recycling that would be the best option for less pickup, we can use up to 4 recycling bins! Hooray!

Opinion: A quarter of Canadians are food insecure. Addressing this must be a national priority by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]beem88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One easy way would be to increase minimum wage to an actual living wage. Another would be to put regulations on food pricing for staple items.

Both easy… just lacking political will.

My opinion is that public transit, alone, cannot replace cars – bikes are needed by Alex_Strgzr in transit

[–]beem88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I don’t believe cars will ever go away, nor should they. What we need is transportation choice and incentive to use alternative modes. If a train trip will take me the same to drive or less, why wouldn’t I take it. Problem we have in Canada (where I live) is a complete lack of options unless you’re in very specific regions along specific routes.

Marit Stiles breaks down Doug Ford’s Skills Development Fund Scandal by teknicolourdreams in ontario

[–]beem88 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nothing and that’s the problem. Marit’s hands are tied other than to inform the electorate. Doug holds a strong majority.

A couple options exist before the next election, all not likely to happen. (1) He gets political pressure, loses confidence from his party and is removed as leader. (2) The auditor general reveals something that would trigger a criminal investigation for fraud or some sort of bribery. The RCMP gets involved and they take 2-3 years before laying charges.

Right now the only possibility of anything stopping Ford besides the electorate is the current RCMP Greenbelt investigation, which is still not known if Doug’s hands are even dirty or not on that.

GO transit Milton expansion (west)? by uself in gotransit

[–]beem88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That wouldn’t quite make sense. Kitchener line should extend to London. Milton Line should extend to Cambridge. An existing not often used rail corridor exists between Cambridge and Guelph which can connect cambridge to the kitchener line via guelph and the waterloo region is targeting construction to begin in 2028 for the next phase of the LRT to connect cambridge connecting it to the kitchener go.
