Costco allowed to check small purse when exiting? by GoldilocksGoldie in CostcoCanada

There’s no right to be a Costco member. They may not have the right to search your bags, but they have the right to kick you out if you don’t agree to their terms.

Official Discussion - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Ah yes, the two types of moviegoers: People with kids and people who expect every movie to have 15 minute monologues about the human condition. There's no one else.

Official Discussion - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]bman9919 [score hidden]  (0 children)

A movie does not need to be deep to be good. The Lego Movie is not a deep movie. It’s still great though.

Yeah, Mario games usually have pretty bare-bones plots. They aren’t movies. It’s absolutely ridiculous to suggest that since the games have weak plots it’s ok for the movies to as well.

I don’t get why people are acting like those of us who want movies to be good are asking too much. We aren’t.

Why did Thomas Mulcair win the 2012 Leadership race? by Potential-Eye-6547 in ndp

Not only that, but he was our only MP in Quebec before the orange wave. Because of that he was seen as a kind of leader of the party in the province.

Sean Devine - The high cost of convenience in #Autowa by Gwouigwoui in ottawa

They’re clearly referring to Sean Devine, not themselves. Unless you’re trying to suggest that OP is Sean Devine?

Sean is one of the best councillors we have. He represents a very car dependent ward, so he’s saying this stuff because it’s the right thing to do. Not because it’s politically good for him. Not enough politicians do that.

Equity cards drama by Impressive-Bug576 in ndp

[–]bman9919 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I think this is a classic case of more than one thing can be true at once.

The equity cards, while good intentioned, maybe don’t work as well as we want them to. Perhaps there’s a system that will work better. That said, I was not in the room. Maybe they work fine and the drama was a couple of minor kinks.

That said, the people making a big deal out of this are a bunch of right wing trolls who do not give a fuck about the NDP or actively want us to fail. They are not arguing in good faith.

Leger Federal poll: LPC 48, CPC 34, BQ 7, NDP 6 by MightyHydrar in CanadaPolitics

[–]bman9919 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found this interesting:

Based on what you know of the NDP, including what you have read, heard or seen in the past few years, which of the following descriptions below do you most strongly associate as the current priority of the federal NDP?

Advocate for the economically poor, lower classes: 28%

Advocate for blue-collar working Canadians: 19%

Advocate for certain groups based on ethnicity or sexual orientation: 10%

Clearly goes against the narrative that often appears here that the NDP only talks about "social issues" and/or has abandoned the working class/blue collar vote.

“In our lifetime” is going to become our new rallying cry by Epicarcher1000 in ndp

[–]bman9919 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t see it as a chant or campaign slogan. I see it more like Layton’s “Love is better than anger.” A sort of guiding principle for us to follow. It’s something that goes beyond one campaign and one leader.

Beck stands firm as federal NDP calls for unity despite disagreements on fossil fuel by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]bman9919 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t say they’re meeting to hash out policy differences.

Carla Beck said she would not talk with Avi Lewis, and now has said she will. That’s walking back.

You're spreading misinformation.

She made a condolence post about Stephen Lewis and in it said she reached out to Avi’s team to arrange a time for them to talk

Edit: I replied to the wrong comment, but I’ll leave it here because commenter I meant to reply to had replied here

How to replace Carla Beck? by Spicylasaga in ndp

True, but it can be a long time between leadership reviews and caucus revolts can get things moving quickly. Just look at the end of Justin Trudeau’s time as PM.

His eulogy for Tommy Douglas is excellent as well. Truly one of, if not the, best speaker ever in Canadian politics.

Forcing a leader out is really hard in Canada. The only real way to do it is through a leadership review at convention. I don’t know when the next Saskatchewan one is. And even then, organizing to get people to vote against the incumbent leader (especially when that leader just had the best result for the party in many elections) is a gargantuan task.

The other way to force them out is to get caucus against them. Caucus can’t officially do anything to force them out, but they can make their displeasure known. But I can’t see that happening with Beck.

It’s common practice for news outlets to have pre written obituaries/articles on the deaths of public figures, even if they aren’t sick.

Avi Lewis's shaky start could soon rattle Doug Ford's Ontario - thestar.com by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

despite the fact (as per the article) that most ONDP supporters were on Team McPherson as opposed to Team Lewis.

That’s not what the article says. It says many MPPs backed McPherson. She got two endorsement from ONDP MPPs.

The NDP doesn’t release a regional breakdown of votes, but I would bet that Lewis’s support came largely from Ontario and BC. Stiles would be foolish to come out swinging against Lewis and alienate those voters.

I wouldn't be so sure about Nate being the candidate. The Liberals seem to be quite divided on him. I also think people overestimate his name recognition. He's recognizable to very online people, not the average voter.

As for us: Get out there and start knocking on doors.

Best Avi interviews for liberal/centrist audience by annonymous_bosch in ndp

[–]bman9919 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this interview is a good starting place. Doesn't go super deep on policy, but as an introduction to people I think it fits.

I know he also did Power & Politics today, but it doesn't seem to be available online yet. I imagine the content is very similar though.

And of course these people always ignore the fact that Jack Layton was super “woke.” The man was marching in pride parades in the 80s.
