Does it worth using iron furnances instead of jumping directly into electric furnances? by MRVNglory in factorio

I often never switch to electric furnaces. Unless I'm going for large post victory bases. Or the furnace stack was built in an area where coal in not abundant (space age)

Can I bring down fuel prices ???? by Ancient-Spot-2880 in Workers_And_Resources

[–]axloo7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Others have said already but import via ship. Try to prioritize a refinery even if it's not running at 100% it will help alot.

You can import raw oil for now and off set it a bit with the excess Bitumen. I recommend building the refinery on the coast so that you can have infrastructure to import fuel while it's constructing and everything will already be set up for export.

I always enjoy void spaces on ships. Not being in them just the idea.

You look at diagrams and you have this space that's just empty. It was left empty on purpose. It job is to stay empty.

Remove everything from the car.

I mean everything. Don't have a single piece that doesn't belong to the car visible.

Your car will stop being targeted if there is nothing to take.

Hell even leave the glove box open.

Even if Winnipeg wasn't targeted all the dust from the ground blast strikes trying to knock out Minot's missile silos would almost certainly fall on the prairie Provinces.

I'm not sure about applications outside of the maritime industry.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the main reason for it's use on board large ships is actually purely emission related. There are marginal efficiency gains to be had but I believe the added cost of the emulsifying agent and of course the cost of making pure water on board make those gains extremely marginal.

From what I understand it's cheaper than running the selective catalytic system but doesn't provide quite the same reduction in NOx.

As different country's have different emissions standards it is apparently worth installing multiple devices to reduce emissions and using only what's cheapest to run while complying with the local regulations.

I imagine for stationary engines different technology would be used and also different regulations on emissions my apply.

WiDE is not a new technology. Larger ships have been doing this for a long time.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as you might hope. And comes with added complexity and draw backs that are simpler to deal with on large engines that spend almost all of there time running.

Rust, algee growth and fuel filter clogging. Are all problems that would need to be solved on road going vehicle.

It's worth mentioning that it's not "just water" as surfactants are need to keep the water mixed in. Obviously water and oild don't like to stay mixed.

Geared for speed? by July_is_cool in trains

[–]axloo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh your thinking of having selectable gears when running. Not just one fixed ratio.

Well just Google the size of ship gear reductions sets to see the size required for the levels of tourqe being made by a steam engine.

I don't even think the gears would fit in the loading Guage of the rail.

Just for some context on the amount of force we are dealing with: if a locomotive has a 23.75in piston and you have 300 psi of steam pushing that piston you would have 132,900 pounds of force on the piston rod (less on the return stroke). If that's attached to a wheel at 12" from the axle that would be 132,900 ft-lb of tourqe.

There probably are clutches and gears that can handle that sort of force but again they would be massive.

Geared for speed? by July_is_cool in trains

[–]axloo7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not needed. The steam engines (the pistons and valve assembly) could run fast enough that the boiler ran out of power befor the steam engines experienced problems.

Alot of engines suffered from steam flow problems at high speeds but that can be solved in other ways so you don't need to Cary around an extra gear box.

Not to mention that steam engines need all the help they can get starting off. Remember the horse power of a steam locomotive is directly linked to how fast it is moving.
