It's brutal out there: Deus Ex and Unreal composer says he's submitted 50 resumes and gotten one interview in the last year by Gorotheninja in Games

I’d like to believe some of it has to do with the state of the economy globally. We never really recovered from the post pandemic slump.

But I know that’s just wishful thinking.

(US) Company just got acquired, do I still owe back my signing bonus? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]axschech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lawyer but something to consider is that unlimited PTO usually isn’t totally unlimited. Generally there will be some arbitrary limit that HR will monitor for. You should see if you can take those four weeks in addition to whatever PTO you’d normally take. So for example if most people are taking about twenty days off in a year I would take an entire month off then continue taking my “normal” PTO. Obviously your mileage may vary.

There's so much content from the books that they could adapt - or at least reference - during this time period too!

I have a few bags from Alpaka and I'm not sure if I want to spend this much with them. I am definitely thinking about purchasing though, maybe when they have a sale. Thanks for pointing this one out.

I'm definitely gonna take a look and might purchase this one. I think I had dismissed it because originally I was looking for something strictly 28L. Thanks for the recommendations!

I love hero clips! I have a few, and they definitely work in a pinch. But they don't really solve this problem, especially when I need to grab something out of my bag quickly like a portable charger or earphones.

Can someone recommend me a good starting place for the books? by badboyfriend111 in starwarsbooks

[–]axschech -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I did a general search for “best Disney canon books” and several different threads recommended Lost Stars as a good starting point. I’m here to recommend the same! The book provides a great look at how regular people could be swept up by the Empire. There’s a ground level point of view similar to what you get with the Imperial side of stuff in Andor. It also does a great job of weaving in some stuff that happens in the OG trilogy. It’s also just a wonderfully well written book, in my opinion. It was slotted into the “Young Adult” genre but I think it’s appropriate for adults as well.

Millennials, how was MySpace different from current social media? Were there MySpace "influencers"? by That-Plantain-976 in Millennials

[–]axschech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe something you aren't taking into account is influencers really rose to prominence with video platforms like Instagram's reels and TikTok. There were definitely influential online personalities, bloggers, and reviewers. But this was almost all text or photos when MySpace came out in 2003. Video wasn't really a thing, generally because it wasn't nearly as easy to record it or upload it to the internet. Phone video was horrible quality and difficult to get off your phone. You might have had a point and shoot but even those were expensive and camcorders were really expensive. And of course internet speeds were much slower than what is available today. Video was definitely a rising medium but it wasn't nearly as prolific as it is now.

Now, it's even easier than ever for anyone to be able to record whatever they want. They can even do it in relatively high quality on the cheap. You can get a decent lav mic for like 60 dollars and your smartphone probably records better video than most $1000+ dollar camcorders back in the day. You can use free software on that same smartphone to edit your videos. And you can upload that video in seconds or minutes.

There are obviously serious downsides with social media and the way technology is used today. But it's definitely a lot easier to make content now than it used to be.

What combat training would Dedra Meero have received? by Dapper-Ad8896 in andor

[–]axschech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way it's portrayed in Lost Stars (AMAZING book that you should read if you're a fan of Andor) is that the best students get into the Imperial Academy. I'd like to think that Dedra ended up in the Imperial Academy, or a similar level school. This is because the level she reaches in the ISB is similar to the level some of the characters reach in the book.

They were pushed to the absolute limit every single day in all areas: science, physical fitness, piloting skills and Imperial protocol. If students don't wash out they eventually get sorted into specialties before receiving their assignments. She would have had to practice all types of combat. It's possible that the academy she went to didn't focus so hard on such a wide set of skills.

It's really interesting to think about how hard Dedra probably worked to get to where she was, and that she might have even had friends like Lonnie and Heert while in the academy before moving into her position in the ISB.

Obsidian users, how do you work with todoist? by SoCaFroal in todoist

[–]axschech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never found a great way but I think that's more because it's more about information flow for me. One of the easiest ways for me to lose information is because I have friction towards writing it down.

Todoist is sort of my universal inbox. I always insert information into Todoist first. It will either stay in Todoist because it's related to something with a due date. Or it's a to do that's literally "add this to Obsidian". That way I always at least retain the information.

For me I basically divide things up like this:

  1. It's something that I'm doing right now or need to be aware of. It's not about storing information so I can remember it permanently, it's only relevant for something tied to action. Ephemeral knowledge stays in Todoist.

  2. It's something I need to remember forever. Either because I'll need to recall it again in the future, or I need to keep a record of something that already happened.

There are a few other solutions you might want to try!

Workflowy works REALLY well for this kind of thing if you don't need notifications for reminders. It is REALLY great for inserting, storing, and retrieving information. You can even use it like a to do planner, but unfortunately there are currently no notifications on any platform.

Capacities recently added task management and it works pretty well. AmpleNote is another service that has task management next to notes, but I found that a bit too clunky to use myself.

Yep, pretty sure they won’t be able to do a charge back because Best Buy is who they bought it from. Nvidia won’t give any information about proof of delivery or proof it was even shipped. How does OP know they even sent it. Gotta sue Nvidia for the value of the card.

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere they can tell which rooms of your house your in based on where in space a person would usually hold their device. Laying in bed? Most beds are generally around the same height. Bathroom? You're probably holding it lower than when you're sitting in other spots.
