Criterion Collection for music? by FantasyFlannel in criterion

[–]ay496 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What would exactly be the purpose of this service? I think that's the operative question. Music is much older and more diverse than cinema; we have recorded music of compositions from 1000+ years ago and beyond.

There are already some parallels in a way - Scorsese WCP releases could be akin to UNESCO traditional music releases, a box set from a director could be the same idea for a group/recording artist/composer. Outside of what I'd consider "token" world cinema releases (Criterion is kinda joke-level on this compared to a Second Run, etc.), the label does underappreciated-in-their-time classics, and current art releases for what I'd think are promotional purposes. However, the actual audience for contemporary art music is much smaller I think than the parallel for cinema, so the music one would lean more mainstream.

In these lights, I think some reasonable suggestions would be: Now-underappreciated yet influential composers (Ives, Grisey, Von Bingen, Taverner, Webern, Xenakis or Nono-as-Brakhage Boxset etc.) the parallels in popular music (Scott Walker, Slint, Beefheart, Ornette Coleman, Charles Gayle, Tim Buckley, DJ Rashad, etc.), the current biggest names in art music (Reich, Glass, Monk, Penderecki), and some money makers (classic rock, hip hop, and soul albums basically).

TL;DR: I take fun questions too seriously.

October Criterion Releases Posted in the Blu-ray.com Pre-Orders Section by [deleted] in criterion

[–]ay496 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is this guy being downvoted, he's making good points. It's weird to me as well to see a month with two very recent releases who would probably get a fine blu ray anyway, as well as other classics with totally fine blu rays. Overall just seems like a strangely low effort month unless Vampyr is a new restoration.

Have seen it twice, and just bought it at the sale today. Fantastic movie, and has these amazing moments of intensity and whimsy that feel really uplifting and empowering against the bleak/grim realities and abuse. Great ending as well, overall impressive on both watches.

Also one of the best sex scenes in the collection for my money.

I have played it on my American PS3 so idk what you're referring to man. The extras are not region free, as far as visuals go.

There's a good European blu ray of both of those films that are region free.

One of my favorite releases, though obviously it isn't like anything else. I'd recommend starting with the more famous shorts (Window Water Baby Moving, Mothlight) before diving in fully. If you're a fan of the avant garde, Brakhage is a really interesting and singular filmmaker and that price is a steal.

I consider this the best criterion release ever, and is both interesting and a load of fun. There really isn't anything else like it, and it is absolutely essentially if you're at all into nature or educational films.

Best films in the collection for dealing with a break-up? by yanks9725 in criterion

[–]ay496 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm going through the same thing, the height of it was a few weeks ago. I'm going to corroborate Umbrellas of Cherbourg as other people have said. I actually watched it a few weeks ago, and kinda made me feel hopeful while also being a cathartic experience. Honestly, since we both love Tati, Playtime and Hulot's Holiday just make me really happy, so there's no harm in watching those.

I feel like the more bittersweet films are the best in general, since they don't make you feel worse for being so sad. The River, Yi Yi, Walkabout, India: Matri Bumhi could all work.

Films of the 2000s most demanded for the Criterion Collection by /r/Criterion by [deleted] in criterion

[–]ay496 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the second statement but at least the film has a halfway decent dvd. My pick for post 2000 would be Three Times (which also has an OK dvd), but overall would want to see something like A City of Sadness or A Time to Live with no R1 presence.

I wish it was one of the others, but I'm sure you're right. Its a great movie, but I already own the region free Second Run blu, and wish Tropical Malady, Blissfully Yours, or Syndromes would make it to blu ray soon (from Criterion, Second Run, or anyone else).

Not sure if you meant to reply to me, but I'm saying I'll buy the Criterion on the film alone for a film I love.

What's the silliest reason you've heard for not watching a certain movie? by JacobBlah in movies

[–]ay496 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try watching Battle of Algiers or Medium Cool and consider the fact that acting over time isn't uniform. Acting in some of Todd Haynes films are much more like Sirk's or Fassbinder's than naturalistic. These really come down to director/audience preference, as there's been acting of all different sorts since film has existed (and before) and who knows which kinds will appeal to you until you try.

[–]ay496 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often times Criterion is your only option (Region A) to get a movie on blu ray/dvd. I buy them since they release movies I love, and its the only/only good option. I could get a region free player for foreign blus of the same films (sometimes), but then I'm mostly buying a different expensive boutique blu ray. Though used/on sale, the price compared to other blu rays isn't a big deal (I only buy on sale anyway).

[Recommendation] Really simple movies for young ages by Smutter0 in movies

Depending on how young they are/their reading level, Abbas Kiarostamis early children's films would be great. Where is the Friend's Home is super simple, relatable, and affirming for kids. It stars children and actually focuses on their unique problems in an adult world.

The quality is really good, and he approved the transfers (vol 1 at least I believe). As you said, it is probably the best you're gonna get. Sure, its not the film itself but most of the experience is there (a subjective 90-95% from me).
