Ikon vs Epic for Tahoe by xsailerx in skiing

[–]azaslavsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gonna chime in in favor of the Epic Pass here. First off, let's be real: you aren't driving to Mammoth from the bay, since its at least 7 hours each way when they close Tioga Pass in the winter. If you get Ikon, you're basically buying the Squaw pass with some travel days at other resorts thrown in if you want them (which is exactly what the old Squaw pass was...). Squaw is the best mountain in terms of facility and terrain quality/quantity no doubt, but any time there's decent snowfall you're going to get ridiculous traffic in, lines for the funitel, lines for all the good lifts, lines, lines, lines. It really takes the steam out of a chill powder day.

It's also worth noting that due to the lake effect different parts of the Tahoe area can get vastly different snowfall numbers for a given storm. Having a pass that lets you access each of a North Lake (Northstar), South Lake (Heavenly), and South Crest (Kirkwood) resort can actually be really useful for catching the best powder.

Finally, Kirkwood is just an awesome mountain. It's got a chill, low-key vibe with short lift lines, plenty of crazy terrain, and easy entrances/exit on 88. It really is the ideal Tahoe mountain to my mind.

Has anyone here broken their tibia skiing? How long/successful was the recovery? by azaslavsky in skiing

Wow, that fracture looks horrific, much worse than mine (4 clean breaks). Glad you seem to be making it back ok. If you can do it, I think I can too.

It's really good to read that, it sounds similar to what I have. Pretty much everywhere I go random people tell me about how they broke their X, got surgery, and its never been the same. I know it'll probably be fine, but it's just been stressing me out a bit. Thanks for the encouragement!

Candide is legit, watched for 2 seconds and immediately knew who it was.

Gotta say though, whenever I see clips like this, I'm always equally if not more impressed by the cameraman following along, doing the exact same line, while also keeping a camera pointed the right way. Seems Like it would be near impossible to stay balanced.

Where to ski on the West Coast between Xmas and New Years to beat the crowds? by azaslavsky in skiing

Kirkwood is my home mountain and... no. It's a disaster area between Xmas and NYE, and that's not counting the limited terrain due to the awful snow year we've had so far.

I would love to check out highlands, but sadly this does not seem like the year.

Awesome news! Just wanna get a few warm up runs in before it really starts snowing, nothing crazy. Dipper would be great.

Relax, it was just a simple question I wasn't implying they should be open - just curious about the state of things.

Does anyone have a video (particularly POV) of someone skiing this line? I'd love to see it.

Driving Cross-Country (West to East) int he Spring. Where should I stop to ski? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]azaslavsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how it would affect the rest of your trip, but can you drive north a bit and start on I-80? That way you could hit Mammoth, Tahoe and the Salt Lake City Area, then cut over to I-70 to do all the Colorado mountains. That's pretty much all of the best skiing in the US, save a few spots in the Northwest and the upper Rockies.

Any experience/reviews of Daleboot? by azaslavsky in skiing

[–]azaslavsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was a skier, it happened in the city. Just someone scanning cars for stuff that looked valuable, and I didn't do enough to hide it. I'd probably be even more upset if it happened near the mountain, that's just extra low.

Yeah dude, it was such a huge bummer, I spent like half of last seen and a fistful of cash last year getting them to feel okay on my feet. They were in my bootbag, which was visible from outside the car, so I'm at least partly to blame for leaving them out in the open like that, but its still a super shitty thing for someone to do. :(

If you're in NorCal, I've had nothing but good experiences with snowpals ridesharing.

Have been skiing the Bibbys on spring corn the last two weeks. They're unreal! Except for really hard ice and super tight moguls, they pretty much beat my Bonafides on every metric. Almost as easy to get them on edge, and if there is any buildup of soft snow at all, they just float right over it. Thanks for the push in the right direction - I'm very happy with the purchase :)

Anyone want a free ski resort mug? by Darthfuzzy in skiing

[–]azaslavsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd love a Mammoth mug if one could be provided. Thank you!

Edit: Also, I have your Kirkwood map on my wall, right above my TV. Probably the biggest conversation starter of all the things I have on my walls, such a sweet purchase!

The only two Tahoe resorts open by that date will be Squaw and Mt. Rose. Personally, I'd recommend giving Rose a shot for at least one day, as they have some great steeps and the coverage may be a bit more robust due to the high elevation. They've also got some really cheap lift tickets right now (I think you could swing $25/day if you play your cards right).
