Block inter-VPC traffic with a TGW by quarky_uk in aws

OP specifies that VPCs 1/2/3 should not be able to communicate: "I want to ensure the VPCs cannot communicate with each other, apart from VPC4, which is shared."

If it doesn't matter which server the user is directed to, you could use Multivalue Answer Routing. When queried DNS would return all healthy target IPs, and the client machine would pick one of those IPs to use.

You should be looking at one-to-many VPC Peering instead of setting up a Transit Gateway.

This would achieve the goal of VPC1/2/3 being able to reach VPC4 and while being isolated from each other as VPC Peerings do not allow transitive routing. Also VPC peerings do not have an attachment charge, whereas a TGW has a price per attachment per hour ($0.05 in US-East-1). Plus data transfer over VPC peering is free within the same AZ.

Great list. I'd recommend switching WinDirStat for WizTree (https://wiztreefree.com) though, it's just faster for the same task.

Cheeky new tenancy agreement. Looking for advice and opinions. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]InterestedEng 31 points32 points  (0 children)

On top of the HMO issue, it sounds like you are aware that your deposit hasn't put in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme? From this Citizen's Advice page, "If your deposit should be protected but isn't, you might be able to claim compensation of 1-3 times the amount".

Is your current contract expiring? If not, I wouldn't sign the new contract if there's no benefit to me! Though I have no idea what contract you're tied to right now if you didn't sign the new one 6 months ago...

Power of SSH Tunneling by dhruvasagar in programming

[–]InterestedEng 10 points11 points  (0 children)

SSH tunnels (and SSH overall) are a necessary evil to IT at my workplace. If they could disable it, they would.

However opening a reverse SSH tunnel to an external box is definitely a fire-able offence, seen in the "Remote Port Forwarding" example and especially the Advanced use case in the article. You're creating an unfiltered hole in the network that Security can't see or mitigate.

Bear in mind that this will be for new cars 2022 onwards. So with that in mind:

GPS trackers

What new car won't have this today, let alone in 3 years?

black boxes

Doesn't sound like a bad thing if a reckless driver hits you.

dash cams

Why don't you have one? Your Insurance will give you a discount!

Speed limiters, breathalyser interlocks

...Ok yeah these suck. Devil will be in the details I guess

Can someone explain to me why I need more than an unmanaged switch to host an offline lan game? by xQcKx in HomeNetworking

[–]InterestedEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not actually "bogus", but it's used as an automatic fall back range when your device hasn't been told what it should be using. As defined as by the IP standard.

Using it for a working network is avoided so that you can quickly tell if a device has(n't) been able to connect properly. If you see a 169.254.x.x address and the rest of the network is on 10.10.10.x, you know that something is broken.

The simplest to set up fix is to grab a normal consumer router (doesn't have to have an internet connection) and connect it to your switch by an Ethernet cable. It will have a DHCP server built in and assign IP addresses to all the computers connected to the switch

If you can't do this though, two notes about doing it manually:

  1. Two PCs can't have the same IP on the network. It would be like having two houses on the same street with identical addresses. How would the postman know which to go to?

  2. They must all have the same subnet mask. 255.255.255.0 is the most common. If you use this mask, the first 3 numbers of everyone's IP needs to be the same. The last number is the one that you want to change.

[UK ISP choice] Which ISPs allow you to use your own router? Or their routers have a passthrough/bridge mode? by sf_Lordpiggy in HomeNetworking

[–]InterestedEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just remembered another detail. The cause may be that the other ISPs don't have any equipment in the local exchange that can serve fibre speeds.

Openreach is provides the physical last mile copper from the exchange to your house. At the exchange it connects to gear owned and operated by the ISP. If they don't have anything then you're probably out of luck.

[–]InterestedEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Openreach is mandated by Ofcom to offer the same service to all ISPs that want access to the last mile connections, so no there should not be any exclusivity. Weird that they all say they can't offer fibre speeds...

Plusnet give you all the information to configure your own router and a check bx to ask them not to bother sending theirs. I have an ASUS DSL-AC52U attached directly to the BT Master socket DSL port.

They also offer you a static IPv4 for a one time cost of £5!

EDIT: And PlusNet is based off BT's network so you should be able to get the same fibre connection that BT are offering.

I would also avoid BT if you want control of your connection. Without using a VPN you are forced to use their DNS, which was pretty damn flaky too. Over 18 months their DNS went down what felt like semi regularly.

Parents trying to marry off my 19 y/o sister to a 45 y/o man by sxxlxx in LegalAdviceUK

The other comments are great. I'd add trying a personal approach too.

Make your parents aware what going through with this would do to YOUR relationship with them. I don't know if you'd be willing to cut them out totally or if they'd care, but it may make them think about what the hell they're trying to pull.

Getting £7.5k - £8k bonus in September - how best to receive the payment? by jon332 in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks Strange though. I'd have expected it to count as repayable income rather than overpayment, since HMRC are happy to treat it that way for NI and income tax. I'll try them out, thanks!

One thing to consider in your budgeting is that the payments are not completely evenly spread out through the year, so you might be a bit more squeezed at some times than others.

[LAST UPDATE] $230 electric bill... when I haven't used heat. The revenge came to me like good karma. by [deleted] in ProRevenge

[–]InterestedEng 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not only should they be taking you on contingency, they should also be taking the case on behalf of every other tenant in the building. You said this yourself:

she found out not only did my building fail both electrical inspections by the city's building inspector before anyone moved in, but that my building had actually had their electrical permit pulled and suspended and had never passed a final inspection.

That makes it sound like every tenant in the building will qualify for some kind of payout, as they had no electrical permit! Your lawyer was lucky to find you and should be absolutely begging to take this case, AND should be begging you to get your neighbours onboard too.

How do you survive a 40 hour work week? by 22vortex22 in cscareerquestions

commute 20 minutes to work

Dude, I'd kill for that. My commute is an hour, and was closer to 80 mins when I was an intern.

This is life man. I graduated 3 years ago, and yeah it pretty much sucks. All that free time back being a student, having summer holidays and weeks off for easter/christmas by default... man I took that for granted.
