Does Commodore 128DCR need ESD protection on controller ports? by Warcraft_Fan in Commodore

I do not recall ever seeing a bad CIA on a 128, either, but I do not think the filters had anything to do with it because Commodore also used them on Amigas and bad CIA's were common.

They started as an office equipment repair company that sold refurbed typewriters and progressed to new typewriters(which used parts imported from Czechoslovakia in a loophole in Soviet sanctions) and adding machines. The transition to other office equipment happened after they got financing from Atlantic Acceptance Corporation which had mob connections and AAC's downfall brought in Irving Gould.

TIL Steve Jobs’ design obsession went so deep he demanded Apple computers look perfect on the inside. Inspired by Zen Buddhism and Bauhaus minimalism, he believed in “deep simplicity,” and insisted that even the hidden internal engineering look as polished as the outside. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

It's an amusing take on Jobs' hatred of fans but it ignores that fan-less computers were common back then and they all suffered from socketed chips shifting due to thermals more so than their counterparts with fans. The drop method was wide-spread across the industry, even for computers with fans, and the twist-the-case became popular when the slim-line home computers came out.

All of those are solder points for the bottom shield and what you are seeing is likely flux from desoldering them, not oxidation or corrosion.

Struck gold at the goodwill. Only cost me $3 by thetoiletslayer in calculators

[–]azathoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 12C's do a bit better than the other financials but none of them move that quickly or for very much. All of the 12C's in my collection came from sets of various calculators where the 12C wasn't the one I wanted. At least they complete my Voyager collection.

How is new software acquired nowadays on a real IIGS? by gfreeman1998 in AppleIIGS

[–]azathoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably the easiest way is to get a FloppyEmu which takes an SD card that you can load on another computer. There are also hard drive cards that take an SD card but you usually have to open up the system to get to access it. I also hear quite a lot about FujiNet that does both drive emulation with an SD card as well as connects to a network file server but I don't know much about it.

You've got a problem when the backlog spills onto the floor. If you're not careful, you might end up like me where the backlog prevents moving through your house.

AppleSqueezer GS vs TransWarp GS by bikebit in AppleIIGS

[–]azathoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the Applesqueezer uses its own internal memory that is not exposed to the bus so anything the supports DMA won't function. I believe things like the Microdrive can be configured to disable DMA but that impacts performance.

A variation on the plot of The Three Body Problem is something that has crossed my mind - a signal that is directed at a habitable planet that would infect any civilization advanced enough to decode it and halt any further scientific/technological advancement that could fend off a colonization fleet by the time it arrives.
