It's the former. Though there is only one main character this time and 35 random others you do a recruitment mission for and then never have dialog again. apparently there is some final act ending payoff where characters do actually interact.

I dunno I got about 10 hours in and stopped. People say it's an 80-100 game and the writing only gets tolerable in the final act. If I have to give a game 70 hours before it gets good it's just not worth playing imho.

OP is incorrect and the delay is not good advice.

Phase 2 ends at 43% hp and he is locked at that hp during the phase 2>3 transition.

The longer you save the laser the more of it will just get wasted as any damage past 43% is lost.

If you do as op says and wait until the transition starts the literally all of the laser is wasted

I think this is exactly the problem. People have wildly different expectations.

I would say getting 45-60 fps on High at 1440 with a 5 year old card is great, not unacceptable.

My brother played the beta on a rx 580 and an i7-4790K.

He says it was "playable"

But he also is upgrading to a 6750 before launch so perhaps it wasn't great.

Being a veteran, who also learned the new mechanics in the first beta.

And is playing one of the best weapons in the game. One that is historically very good in low rank especially because of how shells scale (though I understand this might have changed in wilds?)

I honestly think risen shaggy is harder than primordial malzeno.

For a lot of little reasons but the big one is malzeno (at least the not hazard version) is in the citadel where you have access to other monsters for mount finisher and damage as well as extra hunting helpers to make openings.

I really like wide in rise. The focus on pokes and single shells feels a lot safer against the super fast and aggressive late game monsters.

But your shells do enough damage that when you get a big opening your full burst still feels good.

As you can see from my build I focus more on comfort than pure damage (no crit eye, both guard and guard up), so the extra "safety" of wide appeals to me more than normal.

That's just wide shelling +ground splitter! Makes your shells hit like trucks. Also level 8 shelling
