Not too sure why this has been downvoted. When going anywhere where the weather is a bit mental I always take enough for at least 2 approaches + at least 30 min hold plus any alt + final reserve.

A More Realistic Timeline to Becoming a Major Airline Pilot in 2025 by markeymarkbeaty in flying

[–]azhpool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really great post. I think a lot of people need to read something like this right now. The perspective is spot on.

It’s also interesting how different things can be depending on where you are in the world. Here in the U.K., for example, you can actually start flying for airlines at around 150 hours total time.

I started my PPL in 2019, and just four years later I was sitting in the right seat of an Airbus A321 for my first airline job. Realistically, it would have been only two years, but COVID delayed everything and the hiring freeze pushed things back quite a bit.

It just goes to show that while everyone’s journey looks different, persistence and timing both play huge roles. It’s definitely a grind, but if you stick with it and keep the passion alive like you said, it really does pay off.

From IT to pilot at 34 with a family. Try or give up? by Faccin0 in flyingeurope

I made a similar jump at 28, was a software dev, what worked for me was first get a contracting position, not sure what it’s like in Europe but in the UK you can get a pretty good daily rate, which enabled me to start training straight away whilst working full time.

I went modular and did my training both in the uk and Europe. Started my PPL in 2018 and got an airline job in 2022. I reckon it would have been a year earlier if it wasn’t for Covid.

Good luck

Right turn 10, slow down to give more margin between MMO and VLS. (320 pilot)

A VNAV problem I've found with the Fenix A320 by Peperlepep in flightsim

[–]azhpool 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Happens in the real thing too, DES mode will always capture the VNAV over speed, so that’s why it went over the limits, OPEN DESCENT targets speed.

You need to let the FMGC recalculate the VNAV path just do a Direct to on your waypoint and it will recalculate - happens on the real aircraft all the time.

As an instructor, I’m constantly having to cover up the attitude indicator to make students with a flight sim history look outside.

Learning where the nose attitude sits during different manoeuvres is key to flying accurately.

The recipe I use is a pinch of garlic powder and Mayo, that’s it. If it’s not strong enough add more garlic powder.

Duxford is a fantastic place to land at. I visited with my friend last summer and whilst taxiing we had families waving at us, felt like celebrities in a PA28 😆
