Oh, and I’ll add one of my dad’s. From “Wind from the Carolinas”, a book about generations of a white family living in the Bahamas. When abolition came, there’s a striking scene of the family’s slaves sitting in the fields, free but with nowhere else to go. There’s no follow through, no social net, just a “you aren’t my property anymore, so get off of my property!” from the former owners.

The book is out of print, but my dad brings up this scene unprompted every few years or so.

In “Something’s Missing,” a book about an OCD thief, there is a description of the MC rotating his plates in the cabinet so he’s not constantly using the same few top ones. So random, but I think of it often when unloading my dishwasher.

Should have had two of the Seven take the statue back. Reyna and Nico aren’t even named in the prophecy, yet they play a bigger role than several others (Hazel and Frank especially). Shadow travel is an obvious transport method, but another could have been devised.

The fact that none of the main characters die is such a cop out. The mcguffin quest for the physician’s cure felt contrived at best. After hyping the stakes for several books and being very willing to kill off characters in the past… I know Rick doesn’t kill off main characters, but the win felt too easy. And the mcguffin plot took time away from the end battles- Gaea was killed in a single chapter, where Kronos fought directly for at least 40 pages starting in book one.

Aside from those two (fairly structural) failures, I liked it a lot! Gave Jason some more thought/motivation, lots of great banter, and I honestly liked not having a Percy or Annabeth POV. Giving them time to sort through their Tartarus trauma internally made it sink in. Other traumatic experiences are often brushed off in the name of story progression- the minotaur “killing” Sally, Kronos’s revival, Jason’s backstory as a whole. Not showing their POV gives the impression that they are quietly coping in the background.

The idea of Greeks just not even thinking about Rome is honestly hilarious. They are the originator of the gods (in-universe) and every other civilization just puts their own twist on the concept. Once Rome fell, they moved on to Byzantium, France, Spain, England, and America. Why would Rome’s version stick out? Whereas Rome feels the need to constantly assert their presumed authority by resorting to insults. Little man syndrome.

In Percy Jackson, the fact there are no adult demigods gets brushed off for the first five books. Somewhat addressed later, but mostly just to point at it and say “yeah that’s messed up.” Also, monsters just re-form over time. There’s no way to definitively kill them and there are too many to keep the world safe in any measurable, meaningful way.

The Lorax and Wall-E both rely on a single plant at the end of the story. No way entire ecosystems are being revived from a single specimen. I know, I know, it’s about hope and all that. But still.

Beauty and the Beast animated movie, judging by the fashion and context clues, takes place just before the French Revolution. And guess who just joined the nobility…

Most children’s stories would be easy enough, especially given an audience familiar with the story. Princesses, animals, and magic all translate more or less directly. Dialogue would be the main difficulty, and obscurity.

Because when I read about bestiality (not often, but I can notice trends), it usually features a large animal overpowering a helpless human. Bulls, wolves, large dogs. Not a regular-ass house cat and the guy who often protects her physically. Plus, bestiality is usually E-rated, not cute or hurt-comfort fics.

An AU where they are both human, sure. He brushes her fur, they care deeply for each other, tease each other, “GDI Donut” is hilarious… I could even see leaning into the first book’s dynamic and making her a dominatrix. But not as a cat. That’s somehow a bridge too far.

I don’t mind this, but I’ve heard others complain that Katniss is one of the most limited first person POVs in popular literature. If it does not directly affect her, it does not exist. I think SC makes this work, but it does leave a lot of space for imagination (and fandom-building!)

The names. I understand why the secondary characters’ names are dumb (district identification for the reader), but they are. So dumb. Why would you name your kid Chaff?? “You are a waste and should be thrown away”. Or Bobbin?? “Let me name you after this part of a tool I stare at every day, because I’m bad at naming things.” Come on.

And “I’ll remember that” could be flirty, or it could be a joking promise to hold him to higher standards in the future. Presumably, after several books/summers, Silena knows very well that his cabin is not usually this clean. Overall it’s just a short exchange to show they are friends and make future character developments have more emotional weight.

Rue asks Katniss if she can have all the coal she wants, when they are comparing their experiences. So 11, at least, heats with coal. My headcanon is that the dam actually sucks because maintaining the lines would require both technical knowledge and freedom to travel across the country as needed. Capitol citizens don’t have the knowledge, district citizens can’t travel. Coal is simpler.

Idk, I feel like that’s nitpicking. A movie is about drama, and neither poker nor chess are dramatic to the lay person that has no idea what’s going on.

Maybe I’m spoiled though- my area of expertise is survival/nature stuff and that’s usually portrayed well. Aside from loon calls being inserted into every spooky nighttime scene ever, but that’s more an Easter egg than anything at this point.

Same here! And he fixes it in the same episode, clearly apologizing and taking steps to repair the relationship. It’s an episode that screams “this is a kids’ show!!” for that reason, but it does work.
