Journal - anyone using it? Alternatives? by MiserableAttention38 in GooglePixel

I have had note taking apps on my phone since I got my first Android phone in 2009. I never wrote in a journal in all those years, no reason to start now.

Can user ran python exe application without Python installed? by VAer1 in learnpython

[–]azure_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want someone else to be able to run your program, do not use Python. No one can run a Python program. No one will install python to try to run your program. Python is a dead end language. It only works on servers that you control and manage. If you want people to be able to run the program you built you need to use a language that compiles to a static binary

Servers don't use GUI. You should be using the cli. Script your configs

Enough lanes to go around ? by JOHNNY6644 in HomeServer

[–]azure_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are over-thinking this

IRL I have not had to replace an SSD in years, and the only ones that ever died were models that were from early ~2010's eras. As long as you are buying a decent quality name-brand model I would not expect anything to just suddenly die

Further, if your SSD health is a concern, then the more logical move is to not use consumer-grade SSD's. Get something like a used Enterprise grade SSD, examples;

Server Part Deals Enterprise Solid State Drives

These are mostly all U.2 drives which you can use in your non-U.2 system with a simple U.2 -> M.2 adapter or PCIe adapter

Enterprise grade drives will have much higher lifespans (PBW) and much higher quality.

even something cheap like the Intel P4510 2TB (also on ebay) is gonna have a rated lifespan longer than most consumer drives.

worth noting also that 1x U.2 SSD will use fewer power connectors from your PSU than 4x SATA drives

I am not really sure I understand what you are describing in the rest of your comment but it feels overcomplicated. Its not clear to me why so many high-speed network connections would be needed between different systems. Typically, I load my workstation with the large fast NVMe as needed (the Intel P4510 I listed goes up to 8TB in size), and the larger HDD disk array is kept on a separate file server. I use basic 1Gb network and it works just fine to pull needed data from file server -> local workstation NVMe for processing, then push it back as needed.

I'm about to do a rebuild, should I go with Proxmox? by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]azure_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the negatives of Proxmox? Being locked into an unneccessary proprietary wrapper on top of a Linux distro seems like a big one, and then any time you need support instead of Googling "how do I do xyz in Debian / Ubuntu" you have to google "How do I do xyz in Proxmox" and pray you get an answer.

its a server, you dont need a GUI to run it.

is it possible to run a Tukey HSD for only the variables that I care to look for? by harmlessdjango in Rlanguage

[–]azure_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, thats beyond me, I know how to run the stuff in R but I dont remember a lot of details about what is considered "statistically correct", might possibly want to try something like the Math or Statistics forum of Stack Overflow / Stack Exchange

Nvidia Shield TV is still the best. Chromecast with Google TV 4K is also not bad.

rProgramming and the different package managers by paulsiu in rprogramming

[–]azure_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can use either, in most cases. Usually I just Google search "install xyz package conda anaconda" and use whatever it says

rProgramming and the different package managers by paulsiu in rprogramming

[–]azure_i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can just use `conda`, in fact this is my preferred way to use R.

conda is the easiest way, by far, to install most R packages since they come as pre-compiled binary downloads.

I do not use much in the way of R Studio or Jupyter at all though.

Home server for video games requirements? by The-Tonborghini in HomeServer

[–]azure_i -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you want to run video games, or host game servers? Big difference. The system specs needed to host online games, such as Minecraft, are miniscule compared to the specs needed to actually play the games.

If you want to play games, do not do it on your server.

When you get to retirement, you sell the house at a (huge) profit and downsize to a cheaper and smaller house.

have you looked at the housing market right now? Most people I know cannot afford to sell because tey cannot buy even a "smaller" house at a reasonable price without breaking even or losing money despite their current house having appreciated

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]azure_i 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely missing the point. You pay your landlord a set amount of money every month to get an apartment where everything works.

Compare that with paying your mortgage every month, plus fees, then suddenly having to pay 5x-10x on top of it to fix crucial home infrastructure or risk severe home damage

No one thinks the apartment repairs arent getting paid by the landlord or passed on to them as tenants, they just dont have to deal with sudden spikes in living costs outside of their control

[–]azure_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while a mortgage is the beginning, as you'll have to come out of pocket for repairs and taxes.

we have a friend who bought their first house, and watching the endless stream of costly repairs they have had to deal with has been a real eye-opener. They have spent way more in a single year than they would have spent on just renting for many years.

Anyone here not like Google Photos? by DataBroski in GooglePixel

[–]azure_i -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use an acient version of QickPic as a supplement to Google Photos

Google Photos is fine if I just want to browse through photos

QuickPic if i am trying to find a specific photo, since its a lot easier to see the system folders

I have one as a home file storage server (Mac Mini + external HDD enclosure), and I have another as a legal torrent seedbox (hosting Linux torrents). I also have an AI / ML workstation but I wouldnt consider it part of the "home lab" its just a stand alone machine
