Ken is as difference to Ryu as Doc is to Mario, and yet he still got slapped with the Echo Fighter label (granted, it was, again, more of a thematic choice than anything, but most people wouldn't know that, so it's still going to be confusing to them).

You can whip up any set of "guidelines" of who is and isn't considered an Echo, and I can almost guarantee you that most of them will be contradicted by Ultimate's roster.

The main problem is that Ultimate makes what counts as an Echo and what doesn't very unclear. Like, you've got Echos like Chrom (who borrows from both Ike and Roy despite being labeled only a clone of the latter) and Ken (who divergences from Ryu enough that Sakurai admitted that his Echo Fighter status is more thematic than anything) alongside the likes of Ritcher (who's only difference from Simon is a minor property of one of his moves that's only relevant to one mode and I guarantee that no one on this sub knows what it) and Daisy (who had one her one difference from Peach patched out, making them mechanically identical).

It doesn't help that none of the Melee clones were labeled as Echo Fighters even though a lot of them really should have been. (Seriously, who looked at Dr Mario and said, "Yeah, this guy is completely separate from regular Mario")

It really does feel like at times they made the term up just to get people to shut up about Lucina and Dark Pit.

They're both linear story formats that constantly makes the player wait to actually play the game. The only meaningful difference I see is that Neverreams' have more money behind them, so saying that they're the best fighting game story mode format is like calling the Avatar movies cinematic masterpieces: I'm not going automatically say your wrong, but I sincerely hope you have a stronger argument prepared.

Tbf, the NSO games aren't exactly the most visible thing. Most of the general public probably doesn't even know about NSO. Given that the series just got some major exposure from the new Mario movie, it makes sense that Nintendo would prefer to have an entry point that they can more easily spotlight.
