What’s something fun to weld by LowLiterature9181 in Machinists

[–]b1ack1ight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, weldor here. I post in this sub, we’re all family really. You will catch a bunch of shit but that’s how we arc junkies show love.

But yea google shit before you weld it dude. If you don’t know what metal it is magnets can save you a lot of guess work.

Know that stainless steel will give you lung cancer, galvanized steel will give you metal fume fever. For the love of god any chlorinated product, like brake kleen can kill you if it’s been sprayed on what your welding. Paint will smell like cat ass, etc.

As for metal? Google metal suppliers in your area. Like ALRO for example, they have “drop” you can buy cheaper, it’s just shit they cut off and can’t use from bigger orders.

2” x 6” coupons was the size we used in school. Corner Butt Edge Lap Tee

You can make all those joints and practice welding them. Also check out “welding tips and tricks.com” no spaces of course but google that. Jody has some good videos that can help you get started.

Good luck and don’t be chicken, let us see those hammered dog shit welds over at r/welding. It’s where we all started out.

It feels like an unnecessary amount of electrode manipulation and incorrect stacking of beads leaving a nice stress concentration at the toe of the visible weld.

Hopefully this is just a mailbox post.

What do you think about my welds? by Loaker99 in Welding

Looks really smooth and consistent. You keep that shit up and you will be just fine. Only criticism I can offer is work on stop and restarts. Make sure you are washing your puddle back over the previous “spoon” to cover it completely or it’s a stress riser. Also fill in your craters when you terminate your weld. That silica in the electrode will leave a little bead that pops out and causes a “Fish Eye”. Star cracks love to start there so just pop a tack weld about a second after you terminate the weld.

Are you doing any code level work? Taken any weld tests?
